Isaiah 60:1-6 This passage from the Book of Isaiah was written at a thrilling
moment of Israel’s development. The people had returned from Exile in Baby-
lon and were beginning to realise the universal task of Israel. The salvation
promised to Israel was not just for the Jews but was for the whole world!
Hence these cries of joy in today’s reading at all these curious camels and exot-
ic nations thronging to Jerusalem. There is a similar invitation for us too to be
open: Christ brings salvation not just to us, to those who come to our church,
but to the whole world – to all those grumpy, depressed, selfish, worried, suf-
fering, disadvantaged people we meet in the street; the call is not only to Chris-
tians of every kind, but also to those who have not yet found Jesus. The Epiph-
any is the time when Jesus ‘went public’, symbolized by the coming of the
Wise Men from the East, the first people outside his own sphere to greet him.
So we ought to go out into the street and shout for joy to alert people to what is
on offer. Probably better to be a bit less crazy about it, and simply show the
happiness it has brought to us by sharing our happiness in any generous way
we can!
Ephesians 3:2-3.5-6 This letter to the Ephesians talks about the ‘mystery’. It
really means God’s great ‘secret’ to be revealed at the end of time. The climax
of the long history of the world did indeed come at the Crucifixion and Resur-
rection, because all our hope is in Christ’s Resurrection. That was the moment
when history reached its highest point. This is the only Christian way of view-
ing the world, its slow evolution and then its history of human development, all
directed to Christ and his Resurrection. We are much more aware these days
that the immense universe, with stars millions of light-years away is one great
system of which we are a tiny part. The angels hovering over Bethlehem at
Christ’s birth tell us that all the power of God was focused on that one event.
The Christian believes that one tiny baby, presented to those Wise Men from
the East, brought the secret of the universe to fulfilment. They represent all the
races of the world, even far beyond the known world, coming to greet the Sav-
iour who was presented to all people on that day.
St Matthew 2:1-12 The Wise Men, with their clever knowledge of astronomy
and their lavish gifts, represent all that is best in worldly values. They also
have a bit of magic about them, for frankincense and myrrh were used in
spells, and the word for ‘wise men’ can also mean ‘magicians’. In this case, the
Wise Men have real wisdom and its reward, and all the respect and fame due to
a ‘magus’ and yet they lay it all at Jesus’ feet. It might be worth asking at this
beginning of the year whether we submit all our skills and comforts to Jesus as
the Wise Men did. The story also rests on the sharp contrast between King
Herod and the Wise Men. Herod was a Jew, so he should have recognised and
honoured the Jewish Messiah. Not at all! He tried to kill the Messiah. By con-
trast, the Wise Men, arriving from what for us would be the equivalent of outer
space, carry on their search till they find Jesus and humbly bow before him.
This poses a nasty question: we Christians have all the guidance and encour-
agement of the Church, but how often do we find those outside the Church, not
even professed Christians, behaving in a more Christian way than we do our-
2018 AN EUCHARISTIC YEAR The Bishops of England
and Wales have called for an Eucharistic Congress which will
take place in the Archdiocese of Liverpool in the Autumn.
Our Bishop is planning an Eucharistic Theme for the Annual
Diocesan Pilgrimage to Walsingham which will take place on
Monday, 7th May, 2018.
In our Parish, we will be having a week’s Mission centred on
the Eucharist and Catholic Devotions from the 27th January to
the 4th February led by two members of the OFM Conventu-
als.
The week will include daily talks on the Eucharist, Eucharistic
Devotion and other devotions; visits to our schools, a period of
Retreat and Reflection for our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, and the celebration of First Confes-
sions|Reconcilation for our children who will be making their
First Holy Communion later on in the year.
A more detailed programme will be published next weekend
but for now please pencil that week in your diary. With our
prayers and cooperation this should prove to be a week of
grace for each and every one of us.
Please recite this prayer daily in preparation:
Holy Father, great God of love and mercy, You have sur-
rendered everything for love of us. May we learn to sur-
render everything for love of You. Fill us with Your Holy
Spirit that we may do Your will and not our own. Help us
to love you above all things and to love Your people the
way You have commanded us. Quiet our minds and hearts
that we may be open to the gift of your truth, and grant
that our Parish Mission may be:
a time of Grace for all,
a time of growth for the young,
a time of refreshment for the old,
a time of renewal for families,
a time of healing for the broken,
a time of joy for the sorrowing,
a time of challenge for the complacent,
a time of forgiveness for the sinner,
a time of strength for the holy,
a time of homecoming for all who have been away.
We ask you to grant this humble prayer through Our Lord
Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen
ORGANISERS FOR YOUNG READERS AT 9:30 MASS
The readings at the 9:30 Mass are the full Sunday readings and
are read by younger members of our parish community. Over
the last 15/20 years, we have produced some very accom-
plished young readers due to their application and the dedica-
tion of parishioners who know about voice projection/speech
and drama. (As many of you will be aware, the acoustic at
OLEM is very difficult to master).
Do we have anyone in the parish with a background in speech
and drama teaching or with some understanding of voice pro-
jection who would be willing to take this important and re-
warding ministry on? The current volunteers are no longer
able to help but would like to see the young readers continue
to have an active role in this ministry and the parish communi-
ty. For more information please contact Jo Wager on 07989
811418.
THANK YOU TO ALL CONCERNED The Cambridge
Churches Homeless Project (CCHP) provided 67 places from
the 22nd to the 26th December, with no serious management
issues. Through this period we averaged 21 Volunteers as
cooks, hosts, front door, night & morning Volunteers. At any
one time there are an estimated 60 homeless people in Cam-
bridge and CCHP was not designed to solve homelessness in
the City, but we can bear witness and make a difference to
those individuals with whom we engage. A cohort of 15 guests
were accepted by CCHP at the beginning of December after
numerous meetings with Street Out-reach; there role is to
monitor street homelessness. We thank all those who have
played a part in helping those in need and ask continued bless-
ings on those who have been helped.

OUR PARISH PRAYER
O God, through Baptism you have made us your children,
heirs of heaven and members of the Church. Make our par-
ish a family of one heart and mind in love towards you.
Grant that our common life and work may be an example to
all about us. Guide our Rector and assistant Priests in their
work along with all those involved in ministry.
Acknowledge the intercessions of Our Blessed Lady of The
Assumption and The English Martyrs, our patrons; and keep
us secure in your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus
Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
Please pray for Joanne Walters, Christopher Browne, Ma-
ria Haynes, Mary Wallace, Teresa Foley, Mike Gilpin, Fr
David Hennessy, Keith Docherty, Matthew Morgan, Martin
Ward, Michael Robertson, Ann Verde, Edelburga Anand,
Maria Morselli, Baby Imogen.
For those who have died, and those whose anniversary of
death occurs at this time. May their souls and the souls of all
the Faithful Departed, through the mercy of God, rest in
peace. Amen.
Loving God, your Son accepted our sufferings to teach
us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear our
prayers for our sick brothers and sisters. May all who
suffer pain, illness, disease, and the frailty of old age re-
alise that they have been chosen to be saints and know
that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the sal-
vation of the world. Amen.
LAST WEEK’S COLLECTION
THE CHOIR SCHOOL OF OUR LADY AND THE
ENGLISH MARTYRS Our Parish along with three others
in the Diocese are leading the way in bringing our young
people into a new dynamic with the Sacred Liturgy.
Those who attended the 17:00 Mass on Christmas Eve will
have experienced first hand the beauty of children’s voices
leading us in the worship of Almighty God—our first and
our greatest duty as Christians and from which all other
things flow.
We have established a Choir School and a Junior Choir pro-
gramme in order to train young singers to become lifelong
musicians. Development of vocal technique, musicianship,
and teamwork builds skills that will enrich the lives of chor-
isters and the parish for generations.
The Music Room has been a great blessing for us as a re-
source to use for this important part of our parish life.
The Junior Choir rehearses on Saturdays at 14:45 and
sings occasional Masses with the adult choirs.
If you have a child who is interested in music and would
like to have the opportunity of expanding their knowledge
and experience the team-work necessary for choral singing
then please contact [email protected] for further infor-
mation.
FOR SAFETY REASONS,
ALL CHILDREN MUST BE
ACCOMPANIED TO THE TOILET BY
A PARENT OR ADULT CARER.
BAPTISM By appointment with the Clergy.
HOLY MATRIMONY For holy matrimony,
6 months’ notice is required.
Wishing you all a Blessed
Solemnity of The Epiphany of The Lord
