With the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday, the Church ends Lent, begins the Sacred Triduum and recalls the Last Supper in which the Lord Jesus gave his body and blood under the species of bread and wine. The liturgy commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and includes the Mandatum, or washing of the feet, which represents Jesus’s universal call to selfless giving. All are called to a life of service in imitation of Christ.

As directed for the special circumstances this year consecrated hosts will simply be placed in the Tabernacle. Everyone is invited to remain in prayerful silence following the liturgy, just as the disciples were invited to stay up with the Lord during his agony in the garden. After Holy Thursday, no Mass will be celebrated again in the Church until the Easter Vigil proclaims the Resurrection.

Thursday of the Lord’s Supper

God of day and God of darknessGod of day and God of darkness,Now we stand before the night; As the shadows stretch and deepen,Come and make our darkness bright. All creation still is groaningFor the dawning of your might,When the Sun of peace and justiceFills the earth with radiant light.

Still the nations curse the darkness,Still the rich oppress the poor;Still the earth is bruised and brokenBy the ones who still want more.Come and wake us from our sleeping,So our hearts cannot ignoreAll your people lost and broken,All your children at our door.

Show us Christ in one another,Make us servants strong and true;Give us all your love of justiceSo we do what you would do.

The Introductory Rite gatheringsong:godofdayandgodofdarkness

Let us call all people holy,Let us pledge our lives anew,Make us one with all the lowly,Let us all be one in you.

You shall be the path that guides us,You the light that in us burns;Shining deep within all people,Yours the love that we must learn,For our hearts shall wander restless‘Til they safe to you return;Finding you in one another,We shall all your face discern.

Praise to you in day and darkness,You our source and you our end;Praise to you who love and nurture usAs a father, mother, friend.Grant us all a peaceful resting,Let each mind and body mend,So we rise refreshed tomorrow,Hearts renewed to Kingdom tend.

LIFEMOREABUNDANTLY

I have come that you may have life, and live more abundantly, a life of service in love and truth is meant the soul to feed.In communion we meet our God in perfect ministry, and Jesus comes so we may have life and live more abundantly.

By His example we learn to serve and teach what we believe, that all we share with willing heart brings life more abundantly. With eyes to see them, and ears to hear the ones who are in need,we serve our neighbors so they may join us and live more abundantly.

I have come that you may have life, and live more abundantly,a life of service in love and truth is meant the soul to feed. In communion we meet our God in perfect ministry, and Jesus comes so we may have life and live more abundantly.

With words of comfort and hands that serve with thought, and word, and deed,we recreate the promise of Christ and live more abundantly. In gratitude we praise our God for all that we receive, for He is the light, the truth, the way to live more abundantly.

I have come that you may have life, and live more abundantly,a life of service in love and truth is meant the soul to feed.In communion we meet our God in perfect ministry, and Jesus comes so we may have life and live more abundantly

The Good Friday liturgical service does not include a formal beginning or end. It does not begin with the traditional greeting at the beginning of Mass, nor does it end with a formal dismissal. It includes an ancient form of intercessional prayer for the world. It is part of the whole of the Triduum, beginning and ending in silence.

Taking place between sundown on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday, the Easter Vigil is the first celebration of the resurrection. Described by the Roman Missal as the “greatest and most noble of all solemnities,” the Easter Vigil calls upon every member of the church to gather with the soon-to-be-baptized and keep watch together. As St. Augustine says, “On this night above all other nights, the church keeps watch for the Lord, and the Lord keeps watch over the church.” The celebration begins in darkness and proceeds with the lighting of the Paschal candle, representing the light of Christ in our midst. We then read our Paschal scriptures, which articulate our story of salvation throughout history. The Easter Vigil encourages us all to reflect upon how Christ brings new light and life into each of our lives.

Holy Night

By the Jordan waters down, Jesus Christ, the Word,Was proclaimed by Baptist John As the Lamb of God.Bring us down to the font; in his death we’re baptized.Lead us up from the font: to new life in Christ we arise. From the Jordan waters up, He, baptized by John,Was, beneath the Heavenly Dove, Named Beloved Son.Bring us down to the font; in his death we’re baptized.Lead us up from the font: to new life in Christ we arise.Hear, the gentle voice of God, Lord of majesty,Bids redemption’s light to dawn, thund’ring over the sea.

Bring us down to the font; in his death we’re baptized.Lead us up from the font: to new life in Christ we arise.God has burned away our guilt, that the Spirit bringto each soul to bear His mark: prophet, priest and king.Bring us down to the font; in his death we’re baptized.Lead us up from the font: to new life in Christ we arise.Springs of water sanctified, As His glory’s revealed,Come draw waters from His font, Let creation be sealed.Bring us down to the font; in his death we’re baptized.Lead us up from the font: to new life in Christ we arise.

Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia!Unto Christ, our heav’nly King, Alleluia!Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he’s King, Alleluia!Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!Praise eternal as his love; Alleluia!Praise him, now his might confess, Alleluia!Father, Son, and Spirit bless, Alleluia!

Thank you to our cantors and musicians, lectors, Grad and Undergrad Council, multicultural and social justice leaders, and all who serve the STM community through various ministries throughout the year.
