HomemadeRum

The beat-up old truck pulled over to the side of the road and the little old man whowas driving it called out, “Do you need a ride, señor?” “Thank you very much,” I said, as I crawled into the cab of his truck. “I had arented car that I was driving to Chetumal but it broke down about five miles back.I’ve been walking for half an hour.” “I am going to Mexico, too,” the old man said. “I can give you a ride.” While he was saying this, his truck was swerving all over the road and the smellof rum was overpowering. “No thanks,” I said. “I just need a lift into Corozal and I’ll find a mechanic tocome and work on the car.” Reaching under the driver’s seat, the old man pulled out a bottle of clear liquidand said, “Would you like a drink of homemade rum? I make this myself.” “Oh, no thank you,” I told him. “I’m not a drinking man.” “Not a drinking man? That’s crazy,” the old man said, incredulously. “You needto try this rum. It is good for anything that is wrong with you.” “I appreciate the offer,” I said, “But no thanks.” The truck came to a stop and he reached under the seat again. This time he pulledout a big ugly pistol. “Señor, you really need to try this rum,” he said. “Now that I think of it, I am a little bit thirsty,” I said, eyeing the pistol nervously. I swallowed a big gulp of the rum and tears shot from my eyes. My throat felt likeI had swallowed a shot of battery acid and I could hear my cell phone ringing. I don’teven have a cell phone. “That’s good stuff, huh?” the old man said. I said, “A-a-a-ck!” “I told you it was good,” he said. “Here.” He handed me the pistol and said, “Now, you hold the gun on me and make metake a drink.”
