With the number of different kinds ofboats there are, none is as unique as thebanana boat here on Ambergris Caye.Board Crazy sports is the place to gofor an exciting adventure over the Car-ibbean waters atop a banana boat. Butwhat exactly is a banana boat? It’s along, yellow, soft, buoyant gizmo in theshape of well, a banana. You can’t re-ally call it a boat because it is not selfpowered. It has no keel, frame, sails, motor, tiller, cockpit or anything likethat. It has places to sit well above the

Wet and Wild! – The Banana Boat

water line, and places for you to hangon, and hanging on is what banana boatsare all about. Up to four people can ridethese giant inflatable banana rafts whichare pulled behind their tow boats. Manyhave had such an exciting time that thatthey just keep coming back for more! Owners of Board Crazy, Robert andBeth Colon operate a water sports cen-ter where they offer all the best on wa-ter sport activity for all ages. Whetheryou are into boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding, tubing,

riding personal watercraft, or all of theabove, you’ll find that San Pedro offersplenty of striking places to immerseyourself in your hobby. This time, TheSun got wet and wild as we took a rideon one of the most popular rides around;the banana boat. On a banana boat orwater sled, riders sit astride a large tubewhich is supported by two smaller tubeswhich provide balance and footrests, allowing them to experience some of thethrill of moving fast and close to thewater. It’s an easy and safe way to havefun, and thus a popular ride for the en-tire family. Fun for everyone, the big banana willtake you for an exhilarating and totallyfun trip and of course being in the handsof Robert, there is no need to worry.

Just make sure to hang on tight for a funand exciting ride. Board Crazy’ bananaboat is designed to give you a wet andwild ride as you zip across the oceanand bounce over the waves. If you arehigh-spirited and love adventure, this isdefinitely a ride you can’t pass up. Whowouldn’t want the thrill of skimmingacross the water behind a power boatsitting on a big yellow ‘banana’? Hangon, this is one fast banana! If you wantto experience all the thrills, speed andwet excitement on one ride, then thisbanana boat is for you. Call today to customize your tour at226-3254 or stop by the office on the pierover the water. Their opening hours are7:00a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday from Mon-day to Sunday.

San Pedro Street TreatsSan Pedro Street TreatsSan Pedro Street TreatsSan Pedro Street TreatsSan Pedro Street TreatsOne of the features of life in tropical destinations like San Pedro and other parts of the Caribbean is the sale of in-season tropical fruits, vegetables, candy treats andhome made pastries by road-side or street vendors. Usually, they occupy a very small plot of place. In the corner of a street or in any strategic spot along the streetwhere they usually offer special warm dishes, fresh fruits/vegetables, candy treats and much more. During the year, it is a common occurrence to see or spot thesevendors making a living by providing us with the very best selection of their produce. Walking the streets of San Pedro, one can take a look at a variety of yummy treatsthat are on sale, but do we know most of what they are selling? The Sun, took it to the streets to visit the many local street vendors and find out about the yummy treatsthey offer. Here is what we found out!

As you stroll the streets of SanPedro, you will see a lot of snacksand yummy treats that are perfect fora quick on the go snack. It’s that timeof year again when fruit trees arebearing by the tons. Although they arejust fruits, people turn them into somefantastic “boca” like treats with asimple addition of pepper, salt andlime. There is the mango for instance;these are washed properly, the skinis peeled, cut in long strips andserved in a bag with a spicy peppermixture. It’s delicious for those whocrave sour snacks. Another that usesa spicy mixture is the boiled corn, avery common commodity that isfound almost everywhere. But, whenit is boiled in water with salt and thepepper spice is added the taste is sogood. Usually, you would find thesesold in bags with some lime wedgesand pepper. Another favorite is theplum; yup, it’s the season and is inabundance. The nicer plums are theplump and juicy ones. Like the rest, just add some salt and pepper and youhave yourself a sour snack to munch

on. You can find these at the differ-ent fruit and veggie stalls all aroundSan Pedro. Or, if you are lucky to

have the tree bearing in the backyard, all you need is to add the basic ingre-dients and enjoy. They are usually

sold in bags for just a dollar per bag.Join us next week for more streettreats!

Already a great hit, the corn on the cob now boasts a delicious seasoning and cream. Nestled alongside delicious mangoson sticks, these street treats are definitely a must try!

“I’m getting thirsty,” Casey Moore said. “Let’s stop and get a drink. We’renot going to make it back to Belize City in time to get a ride to San Pedroanyway.” “Yeah, you’re right,” I said. “Let’s stop at this place right here.” We were just getting into Orange Walk Town and it was nearly five o’clock.I had met up with Casey as I was going through the border at Chetumal. Hehad a truck and offered me a ride. “Good evening, gentlemen,” the bartender said, as we took our seats at thebar. “What will it be?” “Let me have a regular beer,” Casey said. “I’ll take a CC and water,” I told him. The bartender returned with our drinks and said, “That will be fifty centseach, please.” “I beg your pardon,” Casey said. “How much was that?” “Fifty cents for the beer and fifty cents for the mixed drink,” the bartendersaid. “How in the world can this place afford to sell drinks for less than theycost?” I asked. “My name is O’Rourke,” the bartender said, “and I own this place. Threeyears ago I hit the jackpot in the New York State Lottery and won seventeenmillion dollars. I always liked bars so I bought this bar. Since I don’t need themoney, I practically give the beer away just to keep the place full.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” Casey said. “Fifty cents a drink is practicallygiving it away.” “Yeah, the place is packed, too,” I said. “I can’t help but notice all thosepeople in the corner by the jukebox. They don’t seem to be drinking. What’sup with that?” “They’re part of a big group of French tourists that are in town right now,”he said. “Why aren’t they drinking?” I asked. O’Rourke said, “They’re waiting for the five o’clock Happy Hour when thedrinks are half price.”
