A Network of Lifetime One of the most touted benefits of working at a summer camp is the network one may build even within the parameters of a single summer. Unlike many work environments, which tend to draw locals with a telescoped set of talents, summer camp attracts staff from virtually all over the world who possess an array of abilities. A successful summer at camp requires the expertise of athletes and artists alike. Because summer camps are 24/7 communities, staff members tend to form very close bonds within the two months that they reside at camp each summer. Camp breeds a sense of family, which is precisely why, for a good many staff members, goodbye at the end of the summer is seldom goodbye forever. Thanks to a little help from social media outlets such as Facebook, it’s possible to stay in touch with summer camp friends no matter where on earth they live. Whether it’s couch surfing while traveling, hunting for a job, needing a little bit of advice or support, or sharing an inside joke, camp friends are there. Working at summer camp is more than just a summer experience. It’s a way to form a global network of friends for life. Here’s to CMC... The best camp in the land! GETTING READY FOR SUMMER! WELCOME JEREMY! We are excited and proud to introduce Jeremy Toren as Camp Mountain Chai’s Director of Jewish Education and Nadiv Fellow. The Nadiv Fellowship is a groundbreaking program through the Foundation for Jewish Camp that created senior experiential Jewish educator positions to be shared by nonprofit camps and Jewish day or synagogue schools. Six camps were chosen throughout the entire country and we are proud to announce that Mountain Chai was one of them. In addition to working with CMC throughout the year, Jeremy will also be a fulltime instructor at the San Diego Jewish Academy. Read below to learn more about Jeremy... Tell us a little bit about yourself: After graduating with a degree in music from Brandeis University, I elected to pursue education as a career. After teaching for a while, I discovered the joy of camp, and spent the last three summers working as the Assistant Summer Director and Judaic Director at Camp Solomon Schechter in Olympia, WA. I also just received my master's degree in Education and Jewish Studies from American Jewish University. What are you most excited for this summer? A unique opportunity to spend time getting to know literally hundreds of new faces in intimate settings. In addition to the time set aside for Jewish learning and activities, I am also looking forward to the informal interactions taking place in the Chadar Ochel and on the basketball court. Why do you think Jewish summer camp is a valuable educational experience? Studies have shown that Jewish camp is one of the best ways to nurture a lifelong love of Judaism in young people. The sights and sounds of kids shouting the Birkat Hamazon or singing Havdallah around a campfire serve as exemplars for the rest of the Jewish community. What are some cool things we can look forward to at camp this summer? The words "learning" and "fun" are never mutually exclusive if you don't want them to be, but I find this to be especially true at camp. Two fun facts about yourself: 1) I have an almost unhealthy obsession with my two favorite sports teams, the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bears. The campers can expect frequent updates on the White Sox' season throughout the summer. 2) I achieved second place in the Cuyahoga County (Clevelandarea) spelling bee in eighth grade.

Working at Summer Camp...A Network of Lifetime

One  of  the  most  touted  benefits  of  working  at  a  summer  camp  is  the  network  one  may  build  even  within  the  parameters  of  a  single  summer.

GETTING READY FOR SUMMER!

WELCOME JEREMY!We  are  excited  and  proud  to  introduce  Jeremy  Toren  as  Camp  Mountain  Chai’s  Director  of  Jewish  Education  and  Nadiv  Fellow. In  addition  to  working  with  CMC  throughout  the  year,  Jeremy  will  also  be  a  full-‐time  instructor  at  the  San  Diego  Jewish  Academy.

Two  fun  facts  about  yourself:1)  I  have  an  almost  unhealthy  obsession  with  my  two  favorite  sports  teams,  the  Chicago  White  Sox  and  the  Chicago  Bears.    The  campers  can            expect  frequent  updates  on  the  White  Sox'  season  throughout  the  summer.2)  I  achieved  second  place  in  the  Cuyahoga  County  (Cleveland-‐area)  spelling  bee  in  eighth  grade.

RACHEL  SHYLOSKI  Amirim  (7th-‐8th  Grade)  Unit  LeaderHello  CMC  families!  My  name  is  Rachel  Shyloski  and  I  am  so  excited  to  be  coming  back  to  camp  for  what  will  be  my  third  summer  at  CMC!  I  am  28  years  old  and  was  born  and  raised  in  North  Carolina.  I  received  my  B.A.  in  Psychology  from  the  University  of  North  Carolina  at  Asheville.    Currently,  I  am  a  lead  teacher  at  Temple  Emanuel's  Early  Childhood  Engagement  Center  in  Greensboro,  North  Carolina.

I  will  be  starVng  Graduate  school  this  upcoming  fall  to  receive  my  Master's  in  Social  Work  and  wilI  be  concentraVng  on  children  at  risk  and  families.  I  am  parVcularly  interested  in  working  with  adolescents  once  they  have  entered  the  juvenile  jusVce  system.  By  guiding  adolescents  to  help  them  to  see  their  inner  light,  develop  their  confidence  and  coping  skills,  they  will  be  empowered  to  achieve  their  goals  and  accept  life's  responsibiliVes.  I  have  always  been  driven  to  help  our  youth  and  have  worked  with  children  of  all  ages  and  in  a  variety  of  seXngs.

In  my  spare  Vme  I  love  to  run  in  the  forest,  bike,  and  am  a  big  bird  "nerd."  I  love  coming  to  camp,  surrounded  by  amazing  people  in  the  beauVful  San  Bernardino  Mountains  which  allows  me  to  do  what  I  love  most.  When  I  am  able  to  guide  and  support  others,  I  feel  the  light  inside  of  me  shining  at    its  brightest.  There  is  something  really  special  about  our  camp  and  the  experiences  we  share  together.  The  bonds  that  I  have  made,  and  the  bonds  I  watch  being  formed  is  why  I  come  to  camp.  I  love  seeing  how  camp  never  ceases  to  amaze  me.  Each  year  conVnues  to  strengthen  our  connectedness,  and  this  summer  I  will  be  working  beside  young  adults  that  I  used  to  be  a  unit  leader  for!    I  can't  wait  to  see  old  faces  and  meet  new  ones!  I  look  forward  to  spending  the  summer  with  our  campers,  and  can  tell  you  this  will  be  the  summer  of  a  lifeVme  and  definitely  one  we  will  never  forget!  See  you  all  very  soon!

AARON  SATALOFF  A4d  (9th-‐10th  Grade  Unit  Leader)

Hello  my  name  is  Aaron  Sataloff  from  Los  Altos,  CA  and  currently  I  am  finishing  my  first  year  of  rabbinical  school  at  Hebrew  Union  College.  I  grew  up  in  several  places  including  Tennessee,  New  Jersey,  Washington,  and  Virginia.  I  graduated

from  the  University  of  Oregon  with  a  B.A.  and  majored  in  Judaic  Studies.  I  have  spent  lots  of  Vme  in  Israel  and  have  done  many  programs  here  like  Project  OTZMA,  which  was  a  year-‐long  volunteer  program  where  we  lived  all  around  the  country,  and  a  Ulpan/Kibbutz  Program  on  Kibbutz  Tzuba  outside  of  Jerusalem  for  5  months,  and  AEPi  Roadtrips.  Growing  up  I  was  involved  in  BBYO  in  Richmond,  Virginia,  and  was  a  brother  of  Alpha  Epsilon  Pi  at  the  U  of  O.  Growing  up,  I  spent  lots  of  Vme  ader  school  and  summers  at  many  Jewish  Community  Centers  across  the  country  and  went  to  camp  at  Emma  Kaufmann  Camp  in  Morgantown,  WV.  I  love  running,  swimming,  biking,  yoga,  basketball,  and  ice  hockey,  but  love  even  more  to  simply  be  outside  in  the  sun  having  fun.  I  wil  be  moving  to  Los  Angeles  this  upcoming  year,  and  am  very  excited  to  be  at  CMC  this  summer!

Meet Our 2012 CMC Unit Leaders

ERICA  SUSSMAN  Staff  In  Training  (11th  Grade)  DirectorMy  name  is  Erica  Sussman,  and  I  am  so  excited  to  be  the  S.I.T.  director  this  summer  at  camp!    I  recently  graduated  in  May  from  the  University  of  Arizona  with  a  major  in  Family  Studies  and  Human  Development  and  a  themaVc  minor  in  social  work.    I  will  be  spending  much  of  2012  traveling  and  seeing  what  the  world  has  to  offer  prior  to  returning  and  beginning  graduate  school  in  the  fall  of  2013  for  my  Master’s  in  social  work.  This  will  be  my  9th  summer  at  Jewish  sleep  away  camp,  my  third  at  Camp  Mountain  Chai,  and  I  cannot  wait  to  be  back!

I  am  looking  forward  to  working  with  the  S.I.T.’s  to  help  each  individual  become  the  best  potenVal  staff  member  he/she  can  be!    While  S.I.T.  summer  can  someVmes  be  a  difficult  transiVon  between  being  a  camper  and  becoming  a  staff  member,  my  goal  is  to  make  this  change  as  easy  and  fun  as  possible  by  incorporaVng  valuable  lessons  with  hands  on,  fun  programs.    That  being  said,  the  SIT’s  can  expect  to  work  hard  and  should  come  to  camp  with  an  open  mind.    Being  an  S.I.T.  is  much  different  than  being  a  camper  and  may  take  some  geXng  used  to,  but  it  is  rewarding  and  exciVng  in  its  own,  unique  way.    This  is  their  opportunity  to  get  to  observe  and  pracVce  being  on  staff  while  sVll  geXng  the  fun  ouVngs  and  acVviVes  geared  towards  them.

A  large  porVon  of  our  training  consists  of  learning  new  informaVon,  including  shadowing  other  staff  members  to  see  firsthand  what  their  jobs  entail,  we  will  spend  a  lot  of  our  Vme  preparing  for  that.  It  is  important  that  we  have  a  secure,  close  knit  group  so  we  will  also  work  together  to  maintain  strong  bonds  amongst  all  of  the  S.I.T.’s  and  our  unit  staff  to  ensure  that  we  have  a  comfortable  and  cohesive  environment  that  enables  each  child  to  feel  confident  in  his/her  ability  to  learn,  teach,  and  grow  throughout  the  summer.    S.I.T.  summer  is  about  learning  about  how  to  be  a  posiVve  addiVon  for  the  future  staff  of  camp  and  learning  more  about  ourselves  for  our  own  futures  as  well.    I  look  forward  to  geXng  to  know  the  SIT’s  this  summer  and  helping  them  to  realize  their  own  potenVal  in  leadership  and  working  with  others!

It’s Time to Start Thinking About Packing…

May  means  a  lot  of  things  to  a  lot  of  people.    To  some  it’s  Memorial  Day  and  the  official  beginning  of  summer.    For  others,  it  marks  the  end  of  another  school  year.    For  summer  camp  parents,  it  means  it’s  time  to  start  thinking  about  packing.    For  first  time  parents,  the  task  can  seem  absolutely  overwhelming.      How  much  sunscreen  and  shampoo  do  I  pack?    Do  they  really  need  shinguards?    How  many  t-‐shirts  are  enough?    For  seasoned  camp  parents,  packing  is  a  science  based  on  experience.    The  art  is  in  packing  just  enough  but  not  too  much  or  too  little…and  knowing  which  items  the  children  have  sneaked  into  their  bags  to  take  out  and  which  ones  to  let  go.    Packing  properly  takes  time…and  patience.

Camps  provide  rather  comprehensive  packing  lists.    These  should  not  be  disregarded.    They’re  compiled  by  professionals  with  years  of  camping  experience  who  have  excellent  knowledge  of  what  children’s  bags  need  to  contain  in  order  for  them  to  arrive  prepared  for  a  successful  summer  at  camp.    Also  keep  in  mind  when  packing  that  living  space  is  somewhat  limited  at  camp.    Your  child  will  not  have  his  or  her  own  room  at  summer  camp.    He  or  she  will  live  together  with  several  other  campers  as  well  as  a  couple  of  counselors.  This  means  that  there  is  not  a  whole  lot  of  room  for  “extras”  and  labeling  clothes  is  important  as  mix-‐ups  are  otherwise  bound  to  happen.    If  laundry  is  your  primary  concern,  rest  assured  that  camp  laundry  is  done  at  least  once  per  week.    Your  child’s

counselors  and  other  camp  staff  will  see  to  it  that  your  child  has  clean  clothes.

Summer  camp  values  also  often  downplay  appearance.    The  emphasis  of  summer  camp  is  on  fun,  friendship,  and  safety.    Before  the  end  of  the  summer,  your  child  will  likely  get  wet,  slimed,  painted,  generally  messy,  and  a  host  of  other  cool  things  that  tend  to  make  children  laugh  and  adults  cringe.    So  keep  the  really  good  stuff  at  home  and  send  clothes  that  neither  you  nor  they  will  miss  too  much  if  they  have  to  be  “retired”  at  the  end  of  the  summer.

It’s  important  for  both  new  and  seasoned  camp  parents  to  pay  as  much  attention  to  the  items  your  child’s  camp  asks  not  to  bring  as  those  items  it  asks  to  bring.    There  is  a  reason  your  camp  requests  that  certain  items  not  be  brought  onto  campus,  whether  it’s  to  help  facilitate  a  specific  environment,  protect  those  with  allergies,  or  to  avoid  other  issues  not  conducive  to  the  spirit  of  summer  camp.    Packing  “do  not  bring”  items  risks  them  being  lost  or  confiscated  until  the  end  of  the  summer.    This  ultimately  causes  undo  stress  on  your  children.    Alleviating  stress  that  results  from  the  idea  of  having  to  leave  a  beloved  item  such  as  a  cell  phone  or  notepad  at  home  is  typically  accomplished  by  reiterating  to  children  about  what  they  will  have  at  camp  as  opposed  to  what  they  won’t.By  following  your  camp’s  advice  and  being  proactive  rather  than  reactive,  packing  for  camp  can  be  a  fun  countdown  to  camp  rather  than  a  reactive  chore.

SARA  SILVERSTEIN  Netzarim  (5th-‐6th  Grade)  Unit  LeaderHello!  I’m  Sara  Silverstein  and  I’m  incredibly  excited  about  the  opportunity  to  work  at  CMC  this  summer.    I’m  currently  applying  to  begin  a  Masters  program  in  Jewish  EducaVon,  i  can’t  think  of  a  beoer  way  to  spend  the  summer  prior  to  beginning  my  program.      I  have  worked  in  a  variety  of  Jewish  organizaVons  and  educaVonal  seXngs  throughout  the  Jewish  spectrum  and  strongly  believe  in  the  power  of  music  and  camp  to  unite  us  all.    I  proudly  support  Jewish  Rock  Radio  and  am  very  acVve  in  the  Jewish  music  scene.    If  everything  works  out  right  I’ll  be  in  Israel  next  year  studying  at  an  Ulpan  and  beginning  my  graduate  course  work.    Other  things  about  me...  I  love  traveling  with  camera  in  hand,  or  on  the  dance  floor,  checking  out  the  latest  and  greatest  new  restaurants,  and  helping  create  amazing  experiences  for  everyone  that  I’ll  be  working  with  at  camp  this  summer.    This  is  going  to  be  a  great  summer!

IRIS  PEDOWITZ  Shorashim  (2nd-‐4th  Grade)  Unit  LeaderHi,  my  name  is  Iris  Pedowitz,  and  I  am  so  excited  to  spend  my  summer  working  as  a  Unit  Leader  for  Shorashim!  I  recently  graduated  from  UC  Davis  with  a  Bachelors  of  Arts  in  English  and  Classical  CivilizaVons,  and  will  be  starVng  a  five-‐month  internship  program  in  Israel  this  September.  I  am  so  thrilled  that  my  post-‐graduate  life  is  off  to  a  fabulous  start—  spending  the  summer  in  beauVful  Southern  California,  and  then  the  opportunity  to  live  in  Israel.  Besides  traveling,  I’m  a  big  fan  of  ballroom  dancing,  playing  the  harp,  and  cooking.    In  fact,  throughout  college,  I  worked  as  a  cook  in  one  of  the  busiest  restaurants  in  Davis.  I’ve  spent  many  prior  summers  as  a  senior  counselor  at  Jewish  summer  camp,  I  cannot  wait  to  add  to  those  incredible  experiences!  I  cannot  wait  to  help  lead  our  staff  and  our  campers  in  making  the  summer  of  2012  one  of  the  most  memorable  experiences  possible.
