IMMACULATE CONCEPTION — OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

Two important liturgical celebrations in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary fittingly occur during the Sea-son of Advent. They are the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th (a Holy day of obligation in Mexico). The Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of her Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States of America and under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe; she is patroness of the Americas.

The two celebrations are closely related to each other, for Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared for the first time to Saint Juan Diego on December 9, 1531, which, at that time in the Spanish Empire, was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In appearing to Saint Juan Diego, she identified herself as “the Perfect Ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the Most True God.” In Mary’s Immaculate Concep-tion, Christ’s work of the Redemption was anticipated; that is, Mary, from the first moment of her life, was freed from all sin and filled with the Holy Spirit (Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 490-493).

The Mother of God has shown her particular affection for the entire continent of America by her ap-pearances to Saint Juan Diego in 1531. The Blessed Virgin Mary came to the continent to show her loving care and to bring her sons and daughters to her Divine Son, the Mercy of God Incarnate. Catholics- Span-iards and Indian, American and European, have always believed there is a relation between Mary Im-maculate and Guadalupe.

During the first two hundred years after the apparition, belief in a link between Guadalupe and the Immaculate Conception usually is evident in discussions of the "Woman clothed with the sun" (Revelation 12,1) plainly recalled by the Miraculous Figure of the Mother of God on the tilma. By 1531 it was com-monplace among Catholics to identify the Woman of the Revelation the Woman who crushes the head of the serpent (Genesis 3,15) with the Mother of God under the title of Immaculate Conception.

Our Lady identifies herself to Juan Bernardino, the ailing uncle of Juan Diego, not the Spanish name Guadalupe, but a word in the Indian dialect Nahuatl: coatlaxopeuhwhich (which is pronounced “quatlasupe” ...Coa meaning serpent, tla being the noun ending which can be interpreted as “the”, while xopeuh means to crush or stamp out. So Our Lady must have called Herself the one “who crushes the serpent.”, (i.e., I am the one who has crushed the head of the serpent).

human sacrifice, thus the name of the snake Quetzalcóatl who was crushed by the food “coatlaxopeuh” (of the Virgin Mary). To Spanish ears that word “coatlaxopeuh” spoken by Juan Ber-nardino would have sounded like Guadalupe; whence the link with a shrine in Spain by the name “Guadalupe” and the popular name of the Mexican shrine.

Aztecs offered annually at least 20,000 men, women, and children in human sacrifice to their gods. The early Mexican historian, Ixtlilxochitl, estimated that one out of every five children in Mexico was sac-rificed. The climax of these ritual killings came in 1487 for the dedication of the new, and richly deco-rated with serpents, temple of Huitzilopochtli, in Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), when in a single cere-mony that lasted for four days and four nights with the constant beating of giant drums made of snake-skin, the Aztec ruler and demon worshiper Tlacaellel presided over the sacrifice of more than 80,000 men.

Certainly, in this case, the Virgin Mary crushed the serpent (as it is written in the Book of Genesis, “a woman shall crush your head”) by putting an end to these barbaric human sacrifices, and a few years later, millions of the natives were converted to Christianity.

Today, the ancient serpent is certainly achieving big hits in its attack upon human life. Millions of unborn children are killed every year around the globe, in procedures that in some countries are not only legal but are also officially supported and financed. This is why Our Lady of Guadalupe has been chosen by the Church as the Protectress of the Unborn, to put an end to abortions.

An incredible list of miracles, cures, and interventions are attributed to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Yearly, an estimated 10 million people visit Her Basilica, making Her Mexico City home the most popu-lar Marian shrine in the world, and the most visited Catholic church in the world next to the Vatican. Altogether, 24 popes have officially honored Our Lady of Guadalupe. His Holiness John Paul II visited Her Sanctuary four times: on his first apostolic trips outside Rome as Pope in 1979, and again in 1990, 1999, and on July 31, 2002, for the canonization of the poor Indian who saw Our Lady in 1531: Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (Talking Eagle). The claim of the Virgin of Guadalupe over the entire conti-nent was confirmed by Pope Pius XII in 1945 when he named her “Empress of the Americas” and again in 1999 when Pope John Paul II declared her “Patroness of All the Americas”.

Who is the Artist who painted the portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe? — Non other than GOD HIMSELF!

This Wednesday at 6:30 am in the Chapel, we will gather to give honor Our Lady by singing a morn-ing serenade called Mañanitas, or “Morning (or Happy Birthday) Love Songs to the Mother of God!”

Advent is a time of anticipation. We look forward to the return of Christ in glory as we reflect on our lives, our spirituality, and even our fail-ings. Reconciliation and daily prayer are wonderful ways to prepare for the day of the Lord. Set aside the hustle and bustle; take some quiet time each day to focus on just what we have as believers.

CATHOLICS FOR LIFE

Please set aside time and join in a 9:00 a.m. Rosary for Life in the Chapel following 8:30 a.m. Mass next Saturday, December 15. Annually, within the octave of Our Lady of Guadalupe's feast, we gather in prayer to honor her as pa-troness of the Americas and of Life, and remember her appearance to Juan Diego which brought about the end of Aztec slaughters and the conversion of millions. During this ROSARY FOR LIFE, we will ask Our Lady of Guadalupe's powerful intercession for an end to abortion today in our nation, for Peace, and for conversion to Christ in our homes, parish, community, country, and world.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas and of Life, Pray for Us.

Let not your heart be disturbed. Do not fear sickness nor any other anguish. Am I not here, who am your Mother? Are you not under my

protection? Am I not your health? Are you not happily within my fold? What else do you wish? Do not grieve nor be disturbed by anything."

(Words of Our Lady to Juan Diego)

Want to help send a teen to the MARCH FOR LIFE and enjoy a great Fish Fry, too? St. John's Parish Catholics for Life group would like to encourage you to ENJOY the Knights' delicious FISH FRY (or pizza or mac and cheese for the kids) beginning at 5:00 p.m. THIS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, in Sebahar Hall. Your meal donation will help a needy teen be part of the Diocesan MARCH FOR LIFE trip to Washington, DC in January. The MARCH is a life-altering experience for our young people as they join over 400,000 others from around the nation to support LIFE. The Diocese is pleased to have the highest number of people attending the March in our Diocese's his-tory; however, there has been an overwhelming request for financial assistance for those attending this year. The Diocese relies strictly on donations to assist those needing aid, and this year they do not have enough to make it possible for all in need to attend. Each person's reason for requesting aid is varied. Some have medical bills, others already work two jobs, some parents are out of work. Many students have explained their parents simply cannot afford the trip so they are trying to make it work on their own. We're grateful for the Knights' generous offer to help a teen attend the MARCH, and thank you for your presence and support at the Fish Fry this Friday.

Annual Stewardship Appeal Last weekend marked the beginning of St. John’s Annual Appeal to Parishioners to give back to God through his Church, a measure of the abundance of gifts, graces and resources that He has granted us. To the degree that we are blessed with time, talent and treasure, we are called to be good stewards of these gifts and to share them responsibly and wisely in keeping with our Christian ideals. This Ad-vent season, the Annual Appeal will focus on the importance of sharing your monetary resources to support our Parish. An Appeal to sharing of your time and talents will be initiated this coming Spring. As you heard Fr. Tom say at Masses last weekend, our Parish is a vibrant faith community which pro-vides the essentials of Catholic life to members of our community through Liturgical, Educational and Christian Service ministries. As important as they are, however, these ministries cannot deliver their services without the necessary financial support from Parishioners to pay the salaries of teachers and staff, maintain the physical plant, and provide the material support for all the programs and services delivered.

This weekend I will speak at all Masses to give witness about my involvement in the Parish and how I have come to a greater understanding of stewardship and the importance of giving back to God through the gift of their time, talent and treasure. In the week following, you will receive in the mail a “Declaration of Intention” card asking for your commitment to continued financial support for St. John’s Parish. In the days ahead, please give prayerful consideration to renewing and, possibly in-creasing, your commitment to financial support of our Parish.

Give to those who have given a life-time. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests worked for many years for little, if any pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement. Your gift to today’s sec-ond collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide prescription medica-tions, nursing care, and more for thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

Decorating for Christmas The time is almost here to prepare our CHURCH HOME for Christmas. We will be working in three stages this year . . .

On Thursday, December 20, between 4 and 6 p.m., we will place the trees, wreaths and the manger scene and change the fabric on the altar.

On Friday, December 21, from 9 until noon, we will place the flowers in the Church.

On Saturday, December 22, we will work in the Chapel from 9 until noon and make finishing touches.

Everyone is welcome! We do need help for this large project! I know this year will be especially beauti-ful.

Please call Patti Loechl, Arts and Environment Com-mittee: 630-653-1710

WISH TREES 2012

The Wish Trees have been in the entry ways of the

church since November 24.

As in years past there will be a variety of tags on the trees to choose from.

Please look closely at the date on the tags; each or-

ganization has a different deadline. In order that small items do not get lost, do not place gift cards under the trees. Instead, please turn these in at the Parish Office. Those groups or individuals who would like to volunteer to bring the gifts after mass down to the storage room in Sebahar Hall, please con-tact Karen Tsaparis at 630-917-0565 or email [email protected].

I would also welcome any volunteers who are available to help with the delivery of the gifts, also.

Thank you.

Volunteers are needed to help children in First Grade

through Eight Grade who are struggling

in school.
