The Secrets of ShivaA gorgeous presentation written by Shud-dhananda Bharati on Shiva, unquestioneddeity of human knowledge.

Lord Shiva has the gift and power to uniteus to his spiritual strength, cleanse ourpast, to teach us and guide us in our evolu-tion and personal development.

His creative and destructive energy of theego leads us into the light. As thealchemist according to our progress, Heheals our wounds, removes our worriesand sows in us the joy and happiness ofbeing, while leading us in our inner questfor the divine in us.

He offers us the chance to find out.

In this book, I would also like to introduceyou to two great personalities of ancientIndia. Firstly, it is Muthuswamy Dikshitar,blessed by Lord Muruga, he was an oceanof music – a rare musician. He was the

Natha Jyothi who got grace of GoddessShakti and gave birth to innumerablegodly songs.

It is 178 years since Dikshitar breathed hislast on a Diwali Day and mingled inNatha Jyothi. All Sangeetha Vidvans(musicians) must celebrate the Diwali fes-tival, especially Dikshitar Day; hiskeerthanas must be sung in every house-hold. I express our thanks to Yogi Shud-dhananda Bharati who wrote this smallwork on the history of Dikshitar.

Secondly, it is Dayananda. In his smallwork titled Rishi Dayananda, the authorspeaks about the history of the Father ofNavbarath Dayananda and the principlesof Arya Samaj in brief. Yogi Sri Shud-dhananda Bharati, who wrote this, hasgreat love for Dayananda and SathyarthaPrakasam, written by Dayananda.

Shuddhananda has translated SathiyarthaPrakasam into Tamil. The marvelous life ofcelibacy, his words of truthfulness andhis Vedic eminence shall spread among

us and Indians shall live united, as sungin solidarity!

Presentation ofDr. Shuddhananda Bharati

11th May 1897 – 7th March 1990

The wise one to the cosmic ageAlthough more than 90 years old, in hisschool in the south of India, Kavi YogiMaharishi (great divine visionary, wisepoet), Dr. Shuddhananda Bharati workedlike a young man of twenty. When he wasasked his age, he answered: “My age isCourage!”

The Yogi wrote several hundred works inEnglish, French, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu andSanskrit; five thousand songs, and fifteenhundred poems in French. The magnumopus of the man conscious of the presenceof God in him, Bharata Shakti, (in 50,000verses) described his ideal: only OneHumanity living in communion with onlyOne God in a transformed world! BharataShakti is a monumental and unique work.The Yogi depicts the essence of all the reli-gions, of all the prophets and saints, all theapproaches of Yoga and all the cultures on

an allegorical fabric. It is a book for anyage which all spiritual researchers and allnations should read and meditate on.

His commitment is summarized in hisbook celebrating his life, Pilgrim Soul.

The two poems mentioned in the openingexpress perfectly his ideal.

His mantra, Aum Shuddha Shakti Aum,nourishes our souls and guides our stepstoward the inner joy Ananda. It means: thelight of Grace and power of the puresupreme Almighty bless us with peace,happiness and prosperity!

Let the beauty and greatness of soul of Dr.Bharati Shuddhananda bloom and scentthe entire Earth with its divine messageand spiritual and unifying benefactor!

Aum Shivam

I. Aum Nama ShivayaLecture of Arul Thiru Yogi, ShuddhanandaBharati, who presided on the holy day ofThiruperur Santhalinga Swamigal.

Shiva, who appears like a silver line in theclouds,He is the witness with eyes fused with thebright rays.He prompts the worldly life, which is likea tree with roots and branches,With his maya game.He purifies anma from the dirt of past andpresent livesThrough bhuvana tatva.I will worship Him and will esteem Him.

Oh, Shuddha Shiva Lovers!We shall praise the Ammaiyappa(Ammaiyappa – Lord Shiva), who unitedall of us in this holy place. Like a silver linein the dark clouds, the God who is theLight of Grace is integrated with the spirit

of His followers. The root of the tree isimplanted in the deep soil, from which thetree rises up with branches, leaves, ediblesand fruits. Likewise, our life is implantedin the ignorance of the present world(Avyakta maya). The lives are therearound with our tangible bodies, but thelove for God gives us the experiences ofthe worldly life, tests us in the emotionsand purifies our soul. There are vast differ-ences between the names to denote theLord. He can be found within this classifi-cation of various names and even beyondthese names. He is all and everything andthe five actions are meant for worshippinghis feet.

The Lord who is incomparable, be worthyof all five actions that belong to Him.

We call Him Santhalingam, who appearslike the chaste blue sky and the dawn.Where can He be seen, we can see him inthe Sidhakasam, the place where he ispraised by his name. Seeing him in thatway is Jnana Siddhi (attaining wisdom).Sanmarg guides us to attain that Siddhi.

The meaning of San is truth. Marg meansthe way to attain truth. The way to reachShiva who is omnipresent, but unseen, isSanmarg. This way can, further, be sortedas Sivapath, Shuddhathvaida and Arul-neri (the way of grace). Humility is thatbowing before the Grace of Lord with lovewhich is egoless; pure mind, which is freeof zeal for the living world, and comeswith freedom, which is aimed at not forprofit. Through this humility we can takeforward our heart in Sanmarg. The mantrawhich is attuned to fell this humility isShivaya Nama, which means salutation toShiva. Instruments like the first course ofprescribed rites in the Shiva system(Sariyai) and actions of previous birth(Kiriyai) were shaped for this purpose.Through these instruments, we shouldcarry out our service for temple, servicefor living beings and service for the master(guru). Executing services in this way iscalled executing service to the Lord.

Appar says,Come, oh, mind! If you think for eternity,Come, enter Shiva’s temple,

Need not take bath before the dawn,Need not sing and praise Him, Need not chant Sankara Jaya!Nor cry; nor wail, Arura (Shiva),Arura (Shiva)!

Appar edifies: head to bow, eyes to seeand heart to think always of the Lord. Wis-dom, education and discipline, all aremeant to adore Shiva, according to Appar.

Namashivayave insight and knowledgeNamashivayave the knowledge and desireNamashivayave my tongue will praiseNamashivayave will show the path ofrighteousness.

(Here, Namashivayave means ‘to payrespect’ in the first two lines and praisingShiva in third and fourth lines).

Know first the five letters (Namashivaya –this word consists of five letters in Tamil),do meditation; here Sambandhar revealsthe uniqueness panchatchara (five lettermantra: pancha – five, atchara – letters): Oh, Shiva, Thou do good to those

Who mingling in grace with you andshed tears In the love for youAnd Thou meaning of four Vedas! Won-drous Thy glory! Namashivayave Thy name

Manivasaga sets off his work Thiruvasakawith the salutation: ‘Greet Namashivaya;greet His feet only’. Thirumula said thatone could attain the Grace of the Lord inthe five (five denotes five letters). Weshould know well the meaning of thismantra and do prayer. Shivam means thesource of joy. He frees the humans fromthe actions of previous birth and show theway to eternal joy. He is the purity andrecognized in the truthfulness, fairnessand freedom. He is Paramatman. He isinterpreted as Ayan (the creator), Mal (theprotector), Uruddhira (the destroyer),Magesha (one who hides things), and Sad-hasiva (the grace giver). Lord Shiva isknown as Shuddha Paramathama whenhe is as he is beyond these five actions.Shuddhashivam alone is Paramporul (theeternal God). That alone is our aim.

Thou befell the world and the mind,The notion in the mind and the formlessGod through notion,Thou befell he and she and thatAnd Ammaiyappan, Thou befell the guru and millions of char-acteristics,And the only goal,Thou befell everything, the Lord of all,Oh, Lord, no other goes without thee.

Wealth of grace,The Grace of Lord will glister in those whohave shed ego. Misery is saying ‘mine’ and ‘mine’Say ever ‘His’ and that is His Grace.

This is the first step in meditation towardsLord. Namashivaya mantra will make ouregotistic mind fall for the Lord. Thismantra does not prompt our ego, butmakes us only pray to the Lord becauseour soul will not be contented without thegrace of the Lord.

He never knew about meI never knew about HimOnce He knew about me as His servant

I also came to know about Him as my master

Manikkavasakar, in his Thiruvasakam,says that he was praying to Shiva whoentered him and poured grace on to him.The Grace of the Lord will come closerand closer as ego keeps going away. Apoor man ekes out his livelihood bydepending upon a rich man. A studentlearns and attains knowledge by beingpolite before his master.

Likewise our soul (Anma) will attaingrace only by surrendering before theLord who is the universal knowledge.Panchatchara mantra helps us in the jour-ney of our surrender towards the Lord.

This mantra is a Vedic mantra. In YazurVeda, one of the four Vedas of HinduDharma, it is said: “Nama: shivayasa shivakarayasa”. Purushasuktha reads this as“Dhasa brahma dhat shiva”. Shiva isdescribed as the Lord who drives out theunwanted things from us. Anma will neverattain eternity without the grace of theLord. This is well described in Agamam.

Namosham yanthi purusha;Swa samarthyath kathasanaMukthvaprasaatham dhevasyaSavasya ashiva haarina;

[The above four lines are given in Sanskritlanguage using Tamil script. So it can beonly transliterated].

Rig Veda says that Rudra will remove oursorrow. Yazur Veda says that Shiva willgive plenty of happiness to us. Namasi-vaya mantra denotes accessible God,whereas Sivayanama is insightful.Manikkavasakar starts his poetry with theword Namasivaya and ends with theword Sivayanama. Thirumula in hispoetry says:

I shall declaim Sivayanama and make it A magic pill to make the whole place golden.

Avvai, the great woman poet of Sangamperiod, said that those who were thinkingSivayanama would face no threat. Si –Shiva or Pathi, va – the grace of the Lord, ya– Anma, na – the evil force, ma – ego. Ouranma is short of knowledge and occupied

by evil forces. Love and ego put our anmain the dark. Still our anma can keep think-ing of the grace of the Lord and reach thefeet of Shiva.

Let the five unwanted things go away To enable Seevan to mingle with ShivaOnce the five unwanted things are driven out The gloominess resulting from desire Will go away

We will realize Shivam when we are freedof five evil forces, viz: thirotham, shud-dham, ashuddham, anavam and kanmam.Thathpurusham piranava jothi mugam. Itwill make us realise the Vedic essence. Itwill pour grace on to us and burn down theevils from our mind. Vamathevam willbring us peace and Sathyojatham will giveus yoga-power and knowledge power.Esanam will provide us magnetic power,wisdom and courage. We can get the visionof Shiva through Panchatcharam. Namasi-vaya will make known the politeness ofour anma, whereas we will keep in mindthe uniqueness of Shiva in the Sivayanama

mantra. Sivayam helps us to enable ouranma of little knowledge to surrenderbefore the Shiva of immense knowledge.Sivayasiva is the insightful panchatcharamantra. This denotes that both origin andend are Shiva; that has no going and com-ing; no start and stop; is inbuilt in it. Theorigin of anma is Shiva. Shiva purifies andesteems our anma, and adds the value ofknowledge to it and absorbs it. Anma isdependent on Shiva in its birth and end.Panchatchara denotes everything startsand ends in Shiva. There is no room forlove and other evil forces of mind in thismantra. Only those who have attained theGrace of the Lord recite it.

Say Shivayanama in concentrationTo wither out the unwanted sinsSay Shivaya Shiva Shiva in concentration; In bondage with HimTo get rid of sins and get hold of Ananda.

I follow Pranava panchatchara anddhasatchara, through this I attained goodknowledge. Aum Shiva mantra is known

as Pranava panchatchara. Aum comprisesthree letters, viz: ‘a’, ‘u’ and ‘m’ (pro-nounced as ‘aa’, ‘vu’ and ‘im’ in Tamil). Adenotes avan (He), u denotes uyir (Anma)and m denotes worldly desire (Paasam).Shiva is the ruler of all three: Avan, Uyirand Paasam. Dropping Uyir and Paasam,we reach Avan. This is the idea containedin Aum or (Aumkar). So Aum is the form ofthe Lord. The universal space is filled withsound. The origin of all sounds is Aum.Therefore, yogis practice fixedness ofmind in devotion by pronouncing Aum.All should meditate using Panchatchara.Pralayagalar should do meditation by pro-nouncing Adhisutsuma panchatchara,whereas Vijnanaghana should do medita-tion by pronouncing Pranava pan-chatchara. As it will reach the Lord, oneshould meditate using Sivoham.

This way Shiva will absorb our anmacompletely. Shiva will become Shivatvam.‘…tvam’ means the inherent quality.Examples are Gurutvam, Sishyatvam,Brahmatvam, Naratvam and Devatvam.The essence of Sivoham mantra is killing

the inner desire and getting integratedwith Parathvam. This is possible throughSivoham, our physique, at the same timeShivamayam is the state of attaining LordShiva in non-physical form. At that stagethe omnipresence of Shiva could beappreciated. These three practices, such asshedding desire, shedding body and inte-grating with Shiva will bring us Sar-vathma sivathvam (omnipresent state ofShiva). These three practices are carriedout through the three mantras, AumShiva, Shivoham and Shivamayam. Thehighest form of the Lord is purity. Purityis the truthfulness. Shuddhan (The pureLord) is the representation of Shiva,Vishnu, Brahma, Buddha, Aruhan,Paramapitha, Allah, Razul and all formsof God of various religions. So God can becalled ‘Shuddhan’. Shuddha Shivam is thereal thing. It exists as it is. The variousforms of Shuddha Shivam are felt asStrength, Desire, Creativity in the worldlylife. Shiva is the form of father, whereasShakti is the form of mother. So the Sid-dhantha is known as Shiva-Shakti (God

and Goddess), Ammaiyappan (motherand father) and Mangaipagan (man andwoman). The rays of strength of Shivaform the world. So we infer God as Shud-dha Shakti. Aum Shuddha Shakti is theinnate meaning of it. Along with this,Mahathuriya Siddha practitioners willunite Dhasatchara and meditate thePurana (complete) Sivaragasya mantra.

Aum Shuddha Shakti Aum Shivam! Sivoham!Sivamayam!

I have been meditating and whisperingthis mantra for the past forty years. This isthe only mantra which guided me to reachthe stages of Yoga knowledge, such askarma, bhakti, jnana, idhayampara siddhi,ambalanadana siddhi, sahasrarasiddhi,thuriya nishtai, sahaja nishtai andmahathuriya siddhi.

The Jebsadhana (meditating / whisperingthe mantra) will start by pronouncing orwriting a word. After taking bath, oneshould sit before Nataraja or Shivalingamand count 108 seeds of rudraksha in thejebamala. This should be continued when-

ever possible. This will make our mindripe in six months. After this stage, oneshould practise jebasadhana silently with-out whispering. This will bring our mindin our control in one year. The heart beatwill be regulated in tune with the jebamantra. The whole body will feel the pul-sating current produced by the jebamantra. After this stage, one can practisejebapranayama.
