“Jesus Land” vs The Real Jesus ~ Pastor Eric

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.”

2 Thessalonians 3:16

The people at Disney refer to Disneyland as “The Happiest Place in the World”. I was there once many years ago and it was pretty great. But even in the “happiest place in the world” there was overpriced food, long lines, hot weather, screaming children and some parents who looked pretty stressed trying to make life perfect for their children.

I recently read a book where the author called parts of American Christianity “Jesusland”. His point was that it’s easy to get the impression that if one follows Jesus that a person’s problems disappear, one will always be happy (or at least not too sad), always have a positive attitude and nothing a person faces will ever get the best of them. He went on to say that those promises are made often by people with perfect teeth, tailored clothing or jeans with rips in all of the right places and a perfect Body Mass Index (BMI) and in excellent shape. It would be great if all of life could be that way, but often people are sick, sore getting out of bed, uncertain of their faith, people die, people aren’t finding fulfillment in their job like they once did, people can get tired in their parenting of their kids and their parents and saving for a retirement that may never happen and you can make your own list according to the chapter in life in which you live. Don’t misunderstand I’m not saying there’s no joy in life, just that real life takes A LOT of energy.

It doesn’t sound much like “Jesusland” but it does sound like the real lives of people I know and it sounds like the real lives that Jesus wants to be a part of and the life into which Jesus wants to bring some peace. I leave you with some words from Sarah Young in her devotional book called Jesus Calling from July 10th which is written from the perspective of Jesus talking to us.

“I know the worst about you, but I also see the best in you. I long for you to trust me enough to be fully yourself with me.

When you are real with Me, I am able to bring out the best in you; the very gifts I have planted in your soul.

Relax and enjoy our friendship.”

Peace to you and God bless you and see you in church this Sunday! Pastor Eric

Upcoming Preaching Themes

Sunday, 8/4/19 ~ Jesus, The Financial Advisor & The Powerball Text: Luke 12:13-21

Theme: Most people like the teachings of Jesus when it comes to love and forgiveness especially when they want to be loved and forgiven. However, this passage contains some teachings that are a little different and might rub some the wrong way. Does Jesus really know what he’s talking about?

Questions to Think About as You Read: Which teachings of Jesus do you really love and abide by?

Do you ever find yourself coveting other people’s stuff or possessions? Why?

Why is this passage problematic for many? How so?

Sunday, 8/11/19 ~ A Heavenly Vision Text: Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16

Theme: When the achievement of our goals seems far away we can get dis-couraged. Many give up or get discouraged on a Biblical vision of heaven be-cause of the state of things on this earth. This passage can help restore our vision of the future and give us encouragement.

Questions to Think About as You Read: When has discouragement in life gotten the best of you?

What helps you get out of bed in the morning?

In the passage how did Abraham and the others keep life in perspective?

Sunday, 8/18/19 ~ When There Are No Words

Text: Psalm 6

Theme: It can be hard to come up with just the right words when we are deeply afraid of something coming at us in life. This Psalm can give us those words and a way to approach God from the depths of our soul.

Questions to Think About as You Read: When have you been really afraid in Life?

When had God delivered you from trouble in life?

What words from this Psalm resonate with you the most?

Sunday, 8/25/19 ~ Stand Up Straight Text: Luke 13:10-17

Theme: The purpose of the law is to allow us to help others.

Questions to Think About as You Read: Who does Jesus heal?

Why is the leader of the synagogue angry with him?

What do you use the Sabbath for?

Looking ahead to Rally Sunday—

September 15th

We will again be packing Blizzard Bags for Meals

on Wheels on Rally Sunday—Sept. 15th.

What are Blizzard Bags? They are non-perishable bag lunches that will be placed in the homes of Meals on Wheels recipients so when the weather is bad and travel is difficult they still have a complete meal in their home. The complete meal in a brown paper bag includes: a can of chicken or tuna a fruit cup individual packs of crackers, such as plain or

cheese or peanut butter crackers hot cocoa packets provided in lieu of milk) granola bars, pudding cups, or small packs of

Prayer and Persistence ~ Pastor Melissa

Everybody prays whether he thinks of it as praying or not. The odd silence you fall into when something very beautiful happens or something very good or very bad. The ah-h-h! that sometimes floats up out of you as out of a Fourth of July crowd when the sky-rocket bursts over the water. The stammer of pain at somebody else’s pain. The stammer of joy at somebody else’s joy. Whatever words or sounds you use for sighing with over your own life. These are all prayers in their way. These are all spoken not just for yourself, but with the hope that God is with you and listening even when you seem to be just mumbling to yourself. According to Jesus, by far the most important thing about praying is to keep at it. The images he uses to explain this are rather comic, as though he thought it was rather comic to have to explain it at all. He says God is like a friend you go to borrow bread from at midnight. The friend tells you in effect to drop dead, but you go on knocking anyway until

finally he gives you what you want so he can do back to bed again (Luke 11:5-8)

Or God is like a crooked judge who refuses to hear the case of a certain poor widow, presumably because he knows there’s nothing much in it for him. But she keeps on hounding him until finally he hears her case just to get her out of his hair (Luke 18:1-8) Even a stinker, Jesus says, won’t give his own child a black eye when he asks for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, so how much more will God give to his children when they ask! (Matthew 7:9-11)

Be persistent, Jesus says – not, one assumes, because you have to beat a path to God’s door before he’ll open it, but because until you beat the path maybe there’s no way of getting to your door.

It’s difficult being persistent in prayer! Sometimes I feel like I’ve said it all before and my words and thoughts are all used up. Then I turn to the book of Psalms which give us words and emotions that range from, “Lord, God in you I take my refuge..” to “Why, O Lord do you hide yourself in times of trouble?”

When you find it difficult to be persistent in prayer turn to some of your own favorite Bible passages. Pray them silently, pray them out loud, sing them if you can!

Just keep at it!

Blessings, Pastor Melissa

Your Gifts to SOC Are Changing Lives WOW!!!

In November of 2018 Ventura County in Southern California suffered two disasters. A gunman forced his way into the Borderline Bar and killed 13 people and less than 48 hours later a wildfire broke out and killed three people and destroyed 15,000 structures. In October 2018, the ELCA offered Disability Ministries grants of $10,000 for 25 different congregations to start mental health ministries. In addition to these grants that helped people recover emotionally more than $20,000 was provided for wildfire evacuees through Lutheran social services. Many in Ventura county are still trying to rebuild their homes and their lives. But rest assured your gifts to SOC are making a difference as we through your giving got to participate in these important ministries.

Special Message for Summer Travelers

Would you find it helpful to have your offerings debited directly from your bank account as you probably do with other obligations? Servant of Christ offers electronic giving for those of you who wish to have contributions transferred electronically to the church’s account. If you have plans to travel this summer, electronic giving gives you a convenient way to keep up with your intended offerings. Simply complete and return an electronic giving authorization form located at the kiosk in the Narthex or go to www.servantofchrist.com and click on the giving page

You can also check out our website at www.servantofchrist.com and click on giving to give online.

Greetings from the music team!

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

But do this with gentleness and respect. ~1 Peter 3:15~

A few weeks ago, I had a good discussion with a loved one about my faith. This person asked some tough questions. When answering, I kept coming back to this phrase, “I love you. I know that God loves you much more than I can even imagine. I live by the faith that He will become real in your life. This carries me through. I don’t have all the answers, but I know this is true.” God gives us the tools to share our faith with others. Even when we feel ill-equipped, afraid or lack the confidence, God is speaking through us. We can’t fathom how He can use our words for His glory and to build His kingdom. Many of you reading this are going through some dark times. I pray that you can hold on to His love, joy, peace and hope. The band and I will share new songs of hope with you during worship in the month of August. Here are some of the words to a song called “Witness” by Jordan Feliz.

“Your love is like a fountain. It will never run dry.

Your love is moving mountains, every day of my life. Can I get a witness? Hallelujah!

So much love, so much grace, come on now, Can I get a witness?”

Let’s continue to witness His deep love for us. Let’s prepare our hearts and minds to answer questions about our faith and our hope. Let’s build each other up by worshiping, singing, praying, and talking together. Let’s proclaim His unending love for us. Can I get a witness?

Peace,

Cathy Yseth

Outreach & fellowship

Military Fleece Blankets – Armed Services Outreach Committee

My name is Michelle Pasko, I am working with the Armed

Services Outreach Committee again to make Fleece Blankets

for the Military. This event will be held on Tuesday August

13th at 6:30pm. Thrivent Financial will be helping fund this

amazing way to give back to those who give so much!

Please come join us in the Fellowship Hall in SOC for this

great opportunity to get to meet new people and send our

warmth to our deployed service members.

For additional information please contact me at: [email protected].

Disciple of God Recipient Project: Little Library

Hello my name is Olivia Stensvad, and I am a disciple of God award recipient. My service project is to build and maintain a free little library that will be placed by the church gardens. I will be holding a book drive to collect books for the library until August 4th. There will be a bin in the Narthex to bring books in to donate. Alt-hough all donations are welcome, the overall purpose is to promote the mes-sage of SOC and spread the word of God, so religious readings are most welcome! Thank you so much for your support!
