The Shadow Thieves is a thrilling book. 13-year-oldCharlottes life transforms to anything but ordinarywhen she notices the yellow-eyed, white-faced men intuxedos stalking her. Her cousin Zee comes to live withher from England and he believes he is the cause of amysterious disease which his friends in England

suddenly got. When Charlotte's friends start gettingsick as well, Charlotte and Zee set out to the real Greekunderworld to find a cure. Down there, the evilgrandson of Poseidon, Philonecron, kidnaps Zee.Charlotte learns that Philonecron forced Zee toenchant his army of evil shadows so he can take overthe Underworld. Charlotte fights all the way to Hadescastle to warn the god of the underworld himself.Hades fights Philonecron and his army of shadows butin the end, Charlotte saves the day. This fascinatingbook is about good and evil ,the sacrifices that have tobe made to attain peace, and finding out who you trulyare.

There are 2 protagonists in this story, both equally important. The

first one is Charlotte Mielzwetski, an ordinary 13 year old girl. Shehas bright red hair and a lot of freckles. She is very strong-willedand stubborn and her personality changes a lot depending onwhat her surroundings are. Then, there is Zachary, or Zee,Charlottes cousin from England. He is very calm and pleasing .Even though he is the same age as Charlotte, he is much more

mature. They both fight against the same opposing force: evil.

The annoying antagonist of this book is none other than Philonecron, and in thiscase, hes evil. If you asked him, he would have said it was for the greater good, if you call stealing peoples shadows and forming an army out of them to take over theUnderworld appealing to anyone other than him. He is really tall, 7 feet at least andlikes to wear fancy clothes. He is the grandson of the god of the ocean, Poseidon. Hismother was a demon so he inherited his magical powers from her. Charlotte and Zeewith help from their friends manage to stop Philonecron before he takes over Hadespalace!

Definition: The context and environment in which a situation is set; the background.

The main setting in this story was the Greek Underworld in 2008. There is a secretentrance to the underworld behind a forbidden door in the Mall of America. Onceyou go through that dark musty hallway there will be a strange fiery kind of light, andthen you will know you have entered the unfathomable underworld. The underworldis made up of many parts, but these following parts are actually in the story. Hadespalace is a huge black castle surrounded by the crowded underworld town. Its is verycold and depressing except for the garden containing Persephones colorful flowers.The underworld town is very dark and gray with monsters and demi-gods inhabitingit. Then there is the river Styx where Charlotte was almost thrown into. It is a verypolluted river filled with wishes and goals of the dead which they neveraccomplished.

plot.

There were 2 types of conflicts in this book. The story had aninternal(Man vs. Self) and an external(Man vs. Supernatural)conflict. The internal conflict in this story was when Zee wasbattling his own conscience about fighting against or becomingevil. Philonecrons mind controlling powers almost persuaded himto become evil but Zees love for good was stronger. Then, the

external conflict in this novel was when Charlotte was using all of her willpower to control the opposing shadows. It was very hardfor her, a 13 year old girl to singlehandedly control a whole armyof shadows but she managed to do it. Thankfully, both Charlotteand Zee picked the better choice of their conflict and nothing thatharmful happened to them.

Definition: A thought or an opinion resulting from such consideration.

I have never read a book so suspenseful, so descriptive, and also as

funny as The Shadow Thieves before. This book is a Grade A pageturner which I just couldnt put down. The story was written inOmniscient point of view and has a great Imagery. I would rate thisbook 9 out of 10 stars. The reason 1 star is missing is because there wasone too many flashbacks and I sometimes lost track on what washappening. I highly recommend that you read this fantabulous book!!!
