1 Stewardship During Easter…What Gives?? I am sure many of you were scratching your heads when you heard that the annual stewardship campaign at the Church of the Good Shepherd has been scheduled for May 17 th thru June 14 th , 2015. This is unprecedented…the annual campaign has always been in the fall (usually between the World Series and Thanksgiving). What is the Stewardship Committee thinking? There are two very good reasons for scheduling the annual stewardship campaign during the Easter season. The first and I think the most important is because stewardship is (and really should be) our response to God’s gracious acts of mercy, compassion and grace extended to each of us in the life, death and glorious resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Is there a time of the year that we are more keenly aware of exactly what God has done for us in Jesus Christ than during the 50 days of Easter?? I really don’t think so. This year we will be doing something totally and completely different than has ever been done before at the Church of the Good Shepherd. We will be introducing (during the four weeks immediately preceding the launch of the annual campaign) a series of four Temple Talks on the foundational principles of Transformational Stewardship. This is an entirely new and different way of thinking about and talking about and doing stewardship that has been embraced by our Diocesan Stewardship Commission (on which I have served since 2009 and, since January, as the Vice Chair). Transformational Stewardship is NOT about fundraising…it is not about raising the funds the church needs to operate the church. Transformational Stewardship is about our individual (and corporate) growth in Christian discipleship. It is about practicing our stewardship of life from a spiritual rather than from a fundraising perspective…about our NEED to give rather than the church’s need to receive. Transformational Stewardship is built upon the foundational idea that one of the most important ways that we grow in our relationship to God and to his Son Jesus Christ is through our stewardship of life. The old paradigm (what I call Transactional Stewardship) needs to be replaced with a new Transformational paradigm, and one way that we begin that process is by breaking out of the old pattern of doing stewardship in the fall (between the World Series and Thanksgiving)…at exactly the time the annual budget is being created! During the annual stewardship campaign this year, which will culminate on Sunday, June 14 th with what we are calling New Consecration Sunday, each and every member of the Church of the Good Shepherd will be asked to prayerfully consider one urgently important question: “What is God calling me to do in terms of my gifts to His Church”. Changing a paradigm which has been firmly entrenched for generations is never easy, and the Stewardship Committee does not expect dramatic results this first year, but we are absolutely convinced that the Transactional paradigm must be changed and so, this very important year (as we prepare to welcome a new Rector to serve this community of faith) we begin to lay the foundation for the introduction of a brand new way of thinking about and talking about and doing stewardship here at Good Shepherd. Our prayer is that every member of the parish will be open to this new message and to the potential that it brings to each who respond to grow as a disciple, and the Stewardship Committee of Jesus Christ and to experience that abundant life that Jesus came to offer to all who follow Him in simple faith and trust…Easter Blessings!! Stewardship During Easter…What Gives??

I am sure many of you were scratching your heads when you heard that the annual stewardship campaign at the Church of the Good Shepherd has been scheduled for May 17th thru June 14th, 2015. This is unprecedented…the annual campaign has always been in the fall (usually between the World Series and Thanksgiving). What is the Stewardship Committee thinking? The Progressive Dinner was a great success! We had more than forty participants. If you were there please share your experiences with our Parish Family. We hope to keep this event a yearly affair. Church History Display

I sure hope that you have had a chance to take a look at the glass case in the Parrish Hall! In it is a rotating exhibit of our collective church family history! I have enough to change the exhibit one more time only!!! Please have a look and see if you have anything that you would like to share with the rest of the Good Shepherd congregants. We are looking for old pictures of events at the church, Sunday school classes or old curriculum, church pins, Bible markers, prayer books, hymnals, Baptismal certificates, marriage certificates, anything else that you might think of that would help us all to come to know and reminisce about our past together! I will take good care of your items and return them after the exhibit runs for 3 or 4 months. Thank you.

EfM looking to start a September 2015 Class

“Interested persons please contact Chuck Lezenby---856-404-4006”

EfM stands for Education for Ministry, and is a self-enrichment program that is coordinated by the University of the South in Sewanee Tennessee, through the Diocese of New Jersey. When we say ministry, we are not talking about "Ordained Ministry" but the ministry that you perform in the world today as a lay person. Students study in four general areas; Old Testament; New Testament; Church History; Theology. Each area is studied for a period of one year. During the study year you will become proficient in Theological Reflections. That is taking scripture or a personal experience and looking at it though God and reflection. The entire group participates. All work in EfM is confidential and not repeated outside the room. We also read the required texts that are provided to you through your tuition. We have also added liturgics as a fifth topic of discussion, but not requiring a fifth year. We mix in those discussions during the four years.

The EfM group is very close knit and it also serves as a support group to its members. Although the program runs for four years, you can take as many segments as you want. When you join, you are committed to a one year segment not four. It is a very worthwhile course of study and I know that you would love it. The class runs on Wednesday evenings from September through June, from 6:30-8:30, followed by Compline in the Chapel.

Please contact me, Chuck Lezenby, EfM Mentor, if you are interested and we can chat (856-404-4006). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join our program. Completion of all fours years earns you a Certificate from the University of the South, presented to you by the Bishop. We are very hopeful that there will be financial assistance available if needed.

Prayers for the Parish Families

For May & June

Update from the Good Shepherd Discernment Committee:

In the month of March we continued work on our two self-description documents: the Portfolio for the Office of Transition Ministry (OTM) website and the Parish Profile for our own website. The OTM Portfolio was reviewed by the Vestry and after last revisions it received final approval at the April Vestry meeting. Len Fedullo worked throughout March taking additional photos during services, in Sunday School, and behind the scenes. You will see these wonderful photos in our Parish Profile and on our website. All the while the Website Committee was busy creating our new website. At the end of March the old website was closed and the new website went live. Under the leadership of Chair Rich Harrington and Webmaster Maureen Wynkoop, the website team of Sue Dixon, Tom Rigg, Chelsea Richmond, and Deb Prieto wrote, edited, and entered all the text and photos. Len Fedullo worked together with Maureen to create the beautiful artwork on the homepage. All of us are now part of this collaborative work in progress: our Webmaster, Website Committee, and Parish Administrator will depend on input from the entire parish to keep the website updated and fresh. Check it out and subscribe for email updates at www.goodshepherdpitman.org. Our final document, the Parish Profile, will be completed and linked to our website in April. We have been blessed with the help of parishioners outside the Discernment Committee to create the Parish Profile. Claude Coulson wrote a description of our Rectory and buildings. Lee Braidwood provided financial information. Len Fedullo and Kelly Lynd created a gallery of wonderful photographs. The Vestry wrote and adopted a Mission Statement for Good Shepherd. The Discernment Committee tackled the rest of the writing, which included open discussions about the challenges our parish faces and the goals we have for the future. Finally, Jeff Bathurst put everything together as our Parish Profile

editor, and created a beautiful “picture” of Good Shepherd in an engaging and professional format. Both the Portfolio and Profile will be shared with the whole congregation in April! In April we will come to the end of the self-description phase of our transition. We have been blessed with great teamwork, open discussion, and welcome support from the parish. All of this is testimony to God’s presence among us at Good Shepherd! When our Portfolio is entered on the OTM website, our transition status will change to “Receiving Names.” In May we will begin to consider who God has called for our next rector. Thanks to all for your help and prayers, and thanks be to God! OUR PRAY-ERS MINISTRY

Each Sunday during Communion time, our team of Pray-ers offer prayers with our parishioners. We have now expanded this meaningful ministry to our Saturday evening, Holy Eucharist at 5:30pm. After you receive Holy Communion, if you want/need additional prayers, there will be a team of Pray-ers by the Lady Altar who will be willing to offer prayers for you. These prayers can be offered in Joy for a Blessing you have received, or it can be to help ease a burden which lies on your heart. Please take advantage of this wonderful ministry of our parish.

Pray-er Ministry

Anyone interested in being a Pray-er Minister at the Saturday night or Sunday services please contact Cindy Taglienti @ 227-1566 or [email protected].

OUTREACH

Thank you so much for your continued donations of clothing for Camden. The people there are in particular need of warm coats and shoes – men’s shoes mostly!!!! We are now delivering the clothes through St Paul’s and St Wilford’s Episcopal churches. Both of them have wonderful outreach programs in the city. If you have men’s clothing or shoes that you wish to donate, please place them in manageable size bags, and leave them on our front porch. We will be happy to make sure that they are rec’d by those who need them! We are located at 223 Highland Terrace in Pitman.

Inquirer’s Group

The Inquirer's Group will meet on Sunday, June 4th following the 10 AM service. Chuck Lezenby will share insights from his experiences as a graduate of our EFM (Education for Ministry) program. Graduates of EFM have spent four years digging deeper into the Christian faith, studying the Bible, church history, theological ideas, and reflecting on connecting faith with life experiences. Chuck will engage everyone in a lively discussion on issues of faith most of us ponder on from time to time.

Hands Ministry

Every so often we get a request for a Prayer Shawl to be given to someone in need. Sometimes it is during an illness, sometimes during grieving periods after the loss of a loved one. The Shawls are crochet or knitted by the women in this ministry. Every other uesday morning you will find our Caring Hands Group knitting/crocheting the shawls in our Conference room. They are made with prayer for those who will receive them. I can’t begin to tell you of the peace and comfort these shawls have brought to so many people. They need not be members of our parish. Need is spread everywhere. If you know of a need, just ask Pat Braidwood.

Consecration Sunday is COMING …Sunday, June 14th!!

Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a Biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. Your Stewardship Committee has selected the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?” During morning worship on Consecration Sunday (Sunday, June 14th), we will ask all our attendees and members to complete an Estimate of Giving card, and make their financial commitments for 2016 to Good Shepherd’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community and around the world. Every attendee and member who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge all people to attend (even those who are strongly opposed to completing an Estimate of Giving card). The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card. We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader (The Rev. Dr. Rob Droste, Canon for Congregational Development and Mission) will be the preacher for Consecration Sunday, and, at the close of the service, will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members bringing their Estimate of Giving cards to the altar as a confidential act of worship. Following the service, we will gather in the Parish Hall for a celebration luncheon. You will be hearing much, much more about Consecration Sunday in the weeks ahead. Please pray about your response to this campaign and how you will answer the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give in 2016?” Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation

in Consecration Sunday events.
