Staged by the Society on Automotive engineers every Spring in Detroit, Michigan, this year's event promises to be the best yet. A spokesman for SAE said: "For nearly too years the automo- tive community has looked to SAE and its annual Congress as the place for infor- mation on vehicle technology.

products. It also has a first-class techni- cal programme that this year focuses on five key technology areas:

• Lightweight materials; • Advanced electronics; • Safety and testing; • Advanced propulsion and

powertrain; and • Environment and emissions.

Jim Padilla, President of North American Ford and an Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company, will be the speaker at the Congress opening ses- sion at 8am on Monday, March 3.

The first two days of the Congress fea- ture intensive powder metallurgy activity with sessions on the afternoon of the first day on high-load gears, full density forged PM helical gears and a compari- son of fatigue properties of heat-treated gears made by double pressing and sin- tering with those produced by warm compaction. The rolling contact fatigue properties of PM steels are also dealt with in the same session.

These, of course, follow the MPIF Automotive Suppliers Luncheon at the Detroit Marriott Hotel, which includes the MPIF Automotive Innovation Award of a PM transmission carrier. Former recipients include Borg Warner, GKN Sinter, Hoeganaes Corporation, QMP and Stackpole.

Diverse functions

The guest speaker at the event will be Steve Wilson, Director of Engine Engineering- Research and Development with Richard Childress Racing, a NASCAR team. He will be addressing a theme of "Winning NASCAR - seeking the technol- ogy edge ".

The following day is even busier in PM terms with a number of presentations addressing various aspects of soft mag- netic PM materials and the coming 42- volt automobile architecture. Soft mag- netic PM materials allow electric motor designers to step outside accepted design norms and, quite literally, reshape the motors on which car functions are rapidly becoming dependent. Some top- of-the-range Mercedes Benz models, for example, use up to 15o electric motors under the bonnet and in the cabin in diverse functions from being critical parts of ABS braking systems to adjust- ing the seats.
