Parish Directory April 2020

Easter Greetings!

Our prayers are with you during this difficult time. It is important for all of us to keep praying and remain faithful. Jesus’ life offers all of us hope and courage in the face of affliction.

As you are well aware we are in “shutdown” mode until the end of April. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Palms will be distributed when this is over.

• Masses are being streamed from the Cathedral and EWTN during Holy Week and Easter.

• Pray the Rosary.

• Current bulletins are available in bins at the front & rear doors of the Rectory.

• We are collecting non-perishable food for distribution to St. Christina families in the Parish Center on Easter Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon.

• Please remember your regular contributions are our lifeblood! Expenses continue during this time. Envelopes can be placed in the Rectory mailboxes (the back door is best).

• Check our website which is updated regularly: stchristinaparish.org.

May our good Lord bless you and your families as you spend time together. We are living in an historical moment. Make the most of it. Trust in God’s providence to get us all through.

Peace & Prayers,

Fr. Tom, Fr. Binu and the Entire St. Christina Staff

Parish Life During the Coronavirus Crisis

Our regular weekend and morning Masses are cancelled. We will NOT have Triduum Services or Easter Vigil / Sunday Masses. Here are some ways you can celebrate this holiest of seasons during this difficult time: • Mercy Home offers a Sunday morning broadcast of the Mass at 9:30 a.m. on WGN.

• The Archdiocese of Chicago broadcasts Mass at radiotv.archchicago.org/television/broadcast-masses; you may also view those same Masses at the archdiocesan YouTube channel by visiting youtube.com (search for “Catholic Chicago”).

• Masses are also available on EWTN. Daily Mass is at 7:00 a.m. and replayed at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday at 7:00 a.m. Mass is live, then they replay it at 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Visit ewtn.com/catholicism/daily-readings for the EWTN webpage of Daily Mass and Readings.

• Daily readings may also be found at the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, usccb.org.

• Relevant Radio offers many resources, including daily Mass at relevantradio.com. Rectory Hours: By order of the governor the Rectory will be closed until May 1. You may call and leave a voice message and someone will return your call. Church Envelopes: You may drop off your Church envelopes in the mail slot at the back door of the Rectory. Open the screen door and drop them in the mail slot. You may also mail them to the Rectory. All of St. Christina activities are cancelled until further notice. • All weddings and baptisms must be postponed and can be re-scheduled only once the order

is lifted. There are no exceptions to this, regardless of the size of the group. However, in case of an extreme emergency for baptism, please seek the permission of your bishop. Funerals and wakes must be postponed until Governor Pritzker’s order is lifted.

• No confessions until further notice.

• The Adoration Chapel is closed until further notice.

• Split the Pot is on hold until the Coronavirus issue is resolved and Sunday Masses resume. The pot will continue to grow and envelopes can be turned in at the Rectory or when Masses resume.

• SCRIP Cash & Carry is CANCELLED until further notice.

• First Communion Retreat has been postponed.

• The Baby Bottle Project is on hold. When the Rectory re-opens (April 8, unless the governor extends the stay-at-home order), they can be dropped off at the Rectory. At the present time, there is no secure place to drop them off since everything is locked up.

• The Lenten CRS Rice Bowls can be turned in when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume. Continued on following page

Baby Bottle Project POSTPONED Our Parish is participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The

Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies — and their mothers — from abortion since opening in 1984. Baby Bottles can be returned when the Rectory re-opens or Masses resume. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life, and remember to keep all pro-life undertakings in your prayers. If you wish to make a donation by check, please make it payable to: The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Please do not make it payable to St. Christina Church.

• Our parish Lenten program, “Bishop Robert Barron’s Seven Deadly Sins, Seven Lively Virtues,” has been CANCELLED until further notice.

• Women’s CRHP Retreat on March 21-22 has been re-scheduled to May 30-31.

• Lenten Prayer Group, Sacred Space, will be VIRTUAL. • Senior exercise has been suspended until April 20.

• Adult Grief Support is CANCELLED until further notice.

WeShare — Online Giving With the Coronavirus emergency, if you wish to give online, please go to our parish website, www.stchristinaparish.org, where you can find more information about online giving. On the left side of the home page click on Online Giving WeShare and follow the instructions.

By order of the Governor the

Church is locked until further notice.

Sew… We Need Your Help! If you can sew, we need your help! Disposable face masks are in short supply and fabric masks can help our healthcare workers and senior citizens. There are many designs online but simple is best. The instructions below for a simple mask can be adapted depending on what you have available. Tightly woven cotton fabric is best. If you don’t have flannel for the lining, use two layers of cotton fabric. If you don’t have elastic, use bias tape or fabric to edge the short end of the mask and make 10-12" ties on each corner. A collection box has been placed in the vestibule of the Oak Lawn Village Hall by the police desk on the west side of the building. The address of the Village Hall is: 9446 Raymond Avenue, Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. Please put your completed masks in a plastic bag and drop them in the box. They will be distributed as needed to local health care providers, nursing homes, etc. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Dig into your fabric stash and be creative! Happy sewing! Since many stores will be mandatorily closed, fabric can be purchased at Walmart, Amazon or mail order from Joann Fabrics.

Important Rectory Information The Rectory is closed until May 1st by order of the Governor. Voice messages will be returned. Emails will be answered. Please continue to drop off your envelopes in the mail boxes at the front and back doors of the Rectory. You may also mail them to the Rectory.

On Orchids and Basil and Resurrection Copyright 2020 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

It all started with my friend Katy’s orchid. She chose it as her work anniversary gift at our previous employer a couple of years ago (Katy has since moved on to another company; I’ve since moved on to retirement). Anyway, she kept the flower at her desk, and I noticed that it looked amazing for weeks after she’d received it. It looked so amazing, in fact, that when my work anniversary rolled around months later — in August of 2018 — I opted for an orchid as well. And please note that this was a first for me, as I always opted for the other work anniversary gift that my employer offered: Frango Mints.

It was tough saying no to Frango, but I knew I’d chosen well when my orchid arrived. Pale yellow flowers. Dark green leaves. Beautiful. So beautiful, in fact, that I couldn’t keep it all to myself (which I pretty much did with the Frango Mints). Instead, I took it home that afternoon to share it with my wife. Sadly, that plant looked to be dead in two-weeks’ time. The leaves were still green, but the flowers had dried and dropped their petals, leaving only a barren stem and the vertical support stick it was tied to. I told Katy that whatever she was doing right, I had done the opposite. My orchid was a goner.

Or so I thought. Gail and I kept it in the same spot we’d had it — in front of a south-exposure kitchen window — but after seeing no change for months, I stopped paying attention to it. Unbeknownst to me, though, Gail had kept watering it. Well, just the other day, I was stunned — really — to see that it was August of 2018 all over again. Pale yellow flowers. Dark green leaves. Beautiful. I snapped a picture and sent it along with a text to my friend. “Katy!” I said. “My orchid resurrected itself…” She responded, “…that’s amazing. I’m laughing because my dad sent me a text yesterday saying he resurrected a basil plant” Then she sent me the picture (lush and green and full) to prove it.

And speaking of resurrections… “On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb…” In these unprecedented times, none of us can be sure of much. Or so it seems, with the coronavirus news changing every day. When we got our ashes in late February, none of us foresaw grocery shelves devoid of disinfecting wipes and toilet paper. None of us foresaw restaurants closing down. And certainly none of us foresaw the Archdiocese cancelling Mass at churches all across Chicagoland. Deadlines being what they are, I’m writing this in mid-March, and who knows what the Great Sunday will bring. Actually, we all know. It will bring the empty tomb that Mary of Magdala saw. It will bring the burial cloths set aside that Peter and the disciple Jesus loved saw. And it will bring the eternal truth that Jesus had to — and did — rise from the dead. My orchid is still beautiful. I trust Katy’s dad’s basil is still lush and green and full. And yes, He is truly risen. Happy Easter.
