ForthosefewgrowingtheearlierwinterBarley,thedullfirsthalfofJunewasabitofadisaster,butthesporadicsuninthesecondhalfofJuneprovidedenoughenergytothelaterSpringbarley,wheatsandoilseedrapecropstoproduceaverageyields,butnotforeveryone.Sadlyoneofourtractordrivershadsufferedastrokesincethelastharvestandwasnolongerabletojoinus:ourbestwishesandprayersforhimforhisrecovery.Withthesuncomingout,thecombineswentinfortheoilseedrapeinlateJuly:whataneasyharvestweatherwise!Onlytwodaysraintogetthenewlysownoilseedrapegoing,butwithwalltowallsunshine,littlestoragedryinghasbeenrequiredthisyear.Andapartfromonetrailerinadvertentlyhittingthebarndoorwhichneededrepairing–noaccidents(wonderful!)buttheusualmachinerybreakdownsincludedoneofthecombinedrivershavinga6.00pm‘sinkingfeeling’onlytofindthebackaxlehasbrokeninhalf:thevastcostofshippinganewpieceinfromAmericawasavoidedbyjackingthecombineup,removingtheaxlethatevening,andweldingittogetherthenextdayandthecombinewasbackinactionwithin24hours.Ahugethankyoutothetwoveryskilfulengineerswhoachievedthisremarkablefeat.Morepeopletooktheadvantagetorideinthecombinesthisyearthaneverbefore,andonemotherandher14yearoldfromCambourneshowedsuchaninterestinfarmingtheystayedforthewholeday…thenewmanagementherearedefinitely‘up’forencouragingtheyoungergenerationtoexploreacareerinfarming.Butthestaggeringproductivityofthelandremainsbreathtaking:Imentionedlastyearthewheatfigures:ifallour900tonnesofZuluwheatwentforWeetabix,at2000½kilopacketsatonne,theretailersshouldsee1.8millionpackets.Andhere’sanewone:theoilfromOilseedrapeisusedinathinlayertoseparatethenougatfromthetoffeeinMarsBars.Onetonneofoilseedrapewouldproduceenoughoilfor1.25millionMarsBars;sothe266tonnesofOSRonthisfarmcouldbeenoughtoproduce332millionMarsBars!Andathoughtfortheyear:dowejustsailonandassumeallthisproductivityandfoodisour‘right’orthatthisisjustthewayitis,ordowethanktheGodbehindalllifefortheextraordinaryproductivityoftheearthwehavebeengiven?Iwillgoonmyannualpilgrimageandgivethanksforthisabundanceandyouarewelcometoslipthroughtheopenchurchdooranytimeyoulikeanddothesame.
AsIwriterecordsarebeingbrokenforthehighestSeptembertemperaturesthiscentury,let’shopethatIamabletosaythesamenexttime!At our September PC meeting we spent some time in the Public Forum discussing thereinstatement of the Bollards in Cross Path, and eventually resolved to meet the HighwaysEngineersagaintoseekasolution.Amajordisappointmentwasthenon-appearanceofrepresentativesofHighwaysEnglandwhowereduetogiveapresentationontheproposedA428DualCarriageway,let’shopethisisnotindicativeoftheiroverallefficiency!TherewillbeameetingattheCadeon29thSeptemberat7.30pm–perhaps!Therewas,however,lotsofgoodnews,ourlongawaited‘NoColdCallingZone’willbeinstalledalthoughnotquiteasplanned–watchthisspace,theprovisionofAffordableHousingismovingonwiththepossibilityofapresentationatournextmeeting,and,asaresultofourinvolvementwiththeParishEnergySavingPartnershipandtheuseoftheThermalImagingCameratodetectheatloss,someResidentsaretoreceivenewheatefficientwindows.IplantocallaNeighbourhoodWatchmeetingintheautumn/winterasthiswillnowembracethe‘GoodNeighbourScheme’,andSpeedwatchwillcontinueuntiltheclockschangewhenthemorningsandeveningsbecometoodark forus tooperate. WeareseekingGrant funding topossiblypurchaseourownkittoalleviatetheproblemsofsharingwithothervillages.We reviewedand renewed theAnnualParish Insurances,approved themonthlyAccounts forpayment,notedtheBankreconciliation,andcongratulatedtheClerkontheExternalAuditor’sreportgivingtheCouncilaclearaudit.TheClerkreportedthattheVillageInstituteTrustDeedwasawaitingtheapprovaloftheCharityCommissioners,weheardthatplanningapplicationshadbeenapprovedforalterationsat theOldPostHouse,weapprovedanapplicationforanextensionat14St.NeotsRoad,butvotedagainstanapplicationforaChickenUnitonFairviewFarmonenvironmentalgrounds.WeagreedtomakeourusualdonationtotheSixVillagesNewsletterwhichissovaluabletotheCommunity, and, following a request from Eltisley & CroxtonW.I., agreed to investigate themaintenanceofthePhoneBox.Thenext PCmeetingwill be atTheCade onTuesday, 8thNovember commencing at7.30pmhopetoseeyouthere.As always, praise or problems to me at 45 Caxton End or on 01480 880122 [email protected]@btconnect.comRogerPinnerChairmanEltisleyPC
