PAPWORTH LIBRARY FRIENDS The Friends is a group of people who are concerned about the risk of further reduction in our local library service & want to encourage greater use of this excellent facility in Papworth Everard. Although our library is not at risk of closure at the moment, the service has already suffered a reduction in staff & opening hours/times & we cannot afford to be complacent. Library usage is judged by footfall, i.e. the

number of visits made using a library card &

pin number to borrow books, magazines etc or

to use the computers. Calling in does not

count.

The Friends want you to know what is

available for you at your local library. Did you

know you can borrow magazines? There are

WHICH magazines for reference purposes as

well as an information point with many leaflets

for local and not so local events. You can also

browse the Cambridge Evening News!

EngAGE is a computer buddy scheme to help

beginner or nervous computer users. The internet is free at the library & is a great source of information so you don’t need your own computer to use Google! Sometimes there are speakers and these meetings are advertised by poster on the library windows.

FROM: REV STEVE The school I went to was one where we had to go to chapel on Sundays, so at a conservative estimate, I must have heard well over a hundred sermons. I can remember precisely two! One of them was when the assistant chaplain got into trouble over Remembrance Sunday when some people thought they heard him say we shouldn’t do it.

What he actually said was that we shouldn’t need it. The horror of war should be so burned into our minds that a specific day to remember should be unnecessary.

This year, we are remembering the centenary of the start of ’The Great War’, the war that was supposed to end all wars.

Of course, it didn’t. Not only the Second World War, but many other wars marred the 20th century, and around the world, wars continue right now, some of them involving the armed forces of the United Kingdom. The horror, if anything, gets worse as weapons get more powerful, and ideologies more entrenched.

People of goodwill are still being called to combat the forces of oppression, tyranny and genocide.

The sad thing is that despite all this, we do still need a day to remember: the pressures and concerns of everyday life all too quickly and easily crowd out things which, however serious, are happening thousands of miles away to people we don’t know.

So we must make time and space to remember, with great gratitude, all who go into action knowing the dangers they face, but prepared to risk their lives on behalf of others.

But we owe them more than just remembering - we owe them our own struggle against the forces of evil and oppression, in whatever form we may encounter them. If those we call to mind at Remembrance are not to have died for nothing, we must be prepared to stand up in our turn and continue their fight. We are not all called to military service, but we can all play our part against hatred and intolerance, whether that’s based on colour, creed, gender, or simply human greed or lust for power.

Every week in church we remember that God in Jesus Christ sacrificed himself for us all, but our church services on November 9th will be particularly about those people who risked and lost their lives in military service. We will remember them.

Our Indian Summer seems to have come to an abrupt end but it was jolly nice while it lasted, now there is a distinct nip in the air, and on that subject, those of you who may require a top up of heating oil, why not give our Fuel Club Supplier, Conquest Oil Company, a ring on 01525 402209/402073, they are competitive and, by delivering monthly, the number of lorries entering the village is reduced.

It’s all good news this month, and it’s really great news that the Institute sold so well at auction, and that after years of wrangling this eyesore will finally be transformed into a building in keeping with the other properties around the green.

More good news is that the ‘Beware of Ducks’ signs have been erected, although most of the ducks seem to have disappeared! They should serve as a further aid to slowing traffic. And on the subject of signs, we will shortly see improved signage to the properties on the north side of the green, and ‘SpeedWatch’ and ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ signs at the entrances to the village, but don’t worry, the PC are conscious of the number of signs in the village and, where possible, these will be fixed to existing posts.

And. . . . more good news, we have planted 1500 bluebell bulbs in the Pocket Park and Woodland Walk, and, in addition to the Parish Councillors, we enjoyed the company of the pupils from the school who assisted with the planting, and will be monitoring the site eagerly anticipating the blaze of blue in the late Spring – providing the muntjac and rabbits don’t dig them all up first!

And. . . . . you may have noticed the village pump in Caxton End has been refurbished, and that the bus shelter is being re-decorated, thanks to those who joined the working party to clear the vegetation around it and to remove some of the lower branches from the trees around the green. The

mower drivers will, I am sure, be most appreciative!

And finally. . . . . you may have seen the media coverage of the campaign to upgrade the A428. We all know this is long overdue but now is the time to put the pressure on. Please register your support, write to the Highways Agency, your MP, County and District Councillors and even Uncle Tom Cobly! But DO help us keep the pressure on.

The winter programme at The Cade began with an excellent film night – a super way to enjoy a film in convivial surroundings, in good company, and with a drink in your hand! And an even more excellent Sunday lunch where Anne’s roast beef was voted A1, and all for £4.00 per head. Do come along and enjoy this super village facility, we have a really good session in the bar on Sunday mornings – sometimes too good! and would you believe, I am going along to the ‘Stretch and Relax’ classes on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings it’s ‘The Wellbeing Workout’, so if you want to catch sight of my lycra clad athletic form, come along too!!

Dates for your diary - Our next PC meeting will be on Tuesday 11th November at The Cade at 7.15 for 7.30pm. The Village Christmas Party will also be at The Cade on Saturday, 6th December 2pm – 4pm and don’t miss Carols round the Peace Tree, Christmas Eve 6pm.

As always, praise or problems to me at 45 Caxton End or on 01480 880122 or [email protected] or our Clerk Jane Bowd on 01480 468451 or [email protected]

THE VILLAGES OF YELLING AND TOSELAND News from your County and District Councillors

A reply from The Minister of State Mr John Hayes MP to myself and Cllr West reiterated previous comments but he did emphasise that he will be speaking to the Highways Agency regarding the A428- he would of course personally like to visit the area but cannot anticipate doing so in the near future.

Probably I would wish more BUT we were more than pleased to be invited to the first meeting on the 1st October of the A428/A421 Alliance Group. This was held at South Cambs Offices and attended by Mr Jonathan Djanogly MP (Huntingdonshire) and Mr Alistair Burke MP (Bedfordshire) with delegates from Cambridgeshire County Council - Cambridgeshire City - South Cambridgeshire Huntingdonshire District Council and Bedfordshire Authority. A Declaration of Intent was issued and also an agreement to the A428/A421 Alliance Objectives as follows:

To build a compelling case for improvements to the route to support economic growth, locally and nationally.

To work with the Highways Agency to develop a comprehensive improvement package and associated investment plan, which will:

Address current capacity constraints

Provide capacity for future growth and prosperity

Improve safety

Improve the reliability of journey time

A further meeting will be arranged in the near future. STOP PRESS: On the 14th October myself and Cllr West attended Cambridgeshire County Council Full Council Meeting – a combined Motion from three political parties was presented regarding the A428 and the impact of this road still only a single carriageway from The Gibbet Roundabout to the Black Cat Roundabout. A good debate followed with our County Councillor Mrs Julie Wisson speaking strongly on the Motion as did many other Councillors. A vote by all 62 members present was made to seek a commitment from the Government and the Highways Agency that improvements will be prioritised for the A428 to perform effectively as a strategic east west link and continue working with all key partners. I myself will be tabling a Motion regarding the A428 at Full Council at Huntingdonshire District Council on the 29th October 2014 with Cllr West seconding my Motion. The Eltisley History Society meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Cade Pavilion, 7.45 for 8pm. Visitors (over 11 years old) always welcome, £2 per meeting, or enrol as a member. Interesting speakers.

26th November Chris Leuchar, Denny Abbey

The Abbey, the Cross and the Knights, The story of Denny Abbey and the Knights Templar

We’ve been thrilled to receive the following message from the great-grandson of Martin Riseley, one of the Eltisley men who died in the First World War, after he received a copy of our ‘Remembering Eltisley’s Fallen, 1914-1918’ book. “What a fabulous job you and your historical committee have done to commemorate the fallen heroes of your village. It was totally unexpected that I would receive a book of this high quality and in this great detail. I cannot imagine the countless hours and dedication that were required to produce this wonderful piece of history. I sincerely THANK YOU and the other members of your team for recognising the war efforts of Martin Riseley. There is much that I did not know of my great-grandfather that I have learned from your efforts. Warm regards, Russ Riseley”

A copy of the book would make an ideal Christmas present for anyone interested in First World War history – order a copy while stocks last!

ELTISLEY FRIENDSHIP CLUB Our Autumn Sale in October was extremely successful – thank you to all who supported us. We enjoyed an interesting afternoon last month hearing about Inez’s travels in Brazil. November’s meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th at 2pm in the Cade: A GAMES AFTERNOON – All Welcome.

business with pleasure, choosing next year’s programme of speakers whilst sampling seasonal fare.

To all ELTISLEY CRICKET CLUB SUPPORTERS This year’s Eltisley Cricket Clubs AGM will be held on Sunday 9th November 2014 at The Cade - 8.00pm start. I have decided to stand down as chairman of the club, so the club is looking for new people to join the committee to drive the club forward and secure its future. If you have an interest in seeing cricket continued to be played on the Green in the future it will be a good time to be involved. If anyone would like to be considered as chairman - can they let me know before-hand. I hope to see you there. Graham Sills, Chairman, Eltisley Cricket Club, 01480 88022

YELLING AND DISTRICT WI Our Annual General Meeting will be held in Yelling Village Hall on Tuesday, 18th November at 7.30 pm. Next year's programme is now being arranged, with speakers covering a wide variety of topics, and we're also looking forward to celebrating the centenary of the WI

movement in 2015. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and informal WI and visitors are always welcome at our meetings. You are invited to come and see for yourself what the WI has to offer - fun, friendship, arts and crafts, outings, theatre visits, cookery, the list is (almost) endless! Details of each month's meeting are published in this Newsletter. If you'd like a lift to the hall or a member to accompany you, please contact Susan on 01480 880014.

By the way, the 'and District' in our name covers Toseland, Graveley and Papworth St Agnes. We'd be delighted to welcome ladies from these (and other) villages.

CROXTON This year marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and over

this summer its unfolding memory has cast a shadow over our pleasant, peaceful, and often pampered, lives. Our task is not just to remember the fallen but to honour them too. In our shared silence and our shared mourning we pay due tribute to those who have fallen in the service of their country.

The British Legion will lead The Service of Remembrance at 10.45am in Croxton Church on 9th November, which is a joint service with Eltisley, and a display will be mounted in the church from Eltisley History Society of the 14 men from Eltisley who lost their lives in the First World War. Refreshments will be served at the end of the Service.

KALEIDOSCOPE: Women’s Discussion Group We kick-started our autumn programme with a fun evening from the House of Colour. The Cade was buzzing, the wine was flowing and laughs were in abundance. This month sees the return of Elaine Taylor from Relate who’ll be talking to us about ‘Relationship Skills’. Elaine presents in a very easy, relaxed manner and is a popular speaker, so please put Monday 24th November in your diary – it would be great to see you. Future dates (all held in The Cade - for everyone in every village): Monday 26th January: Lisa Kent Trust – a Charity dedicated to providing the children of the Gambia with the education they need for a brighter future. Liz Tinkler, one of the founders of the Trust will have recently returned from the Gambia so it should be interesting to hear her stories. Monday 9th March: Depression and Bi Polar Disorder. Mary Blackhurst Hill will talk on this often misinformed and difficult subject. For more information, give me a ring on 07974 082 604 - Anne

ST PANDIONIA’S PARISH

Last month we celebrated Harvest Festival – many thanks to all who helped decorate the church, worked hard to clear up the church yard and brought gifts and produce along to the service. Most of these were auctioned the following night at the Harvest Supper in aid of Water Aid with non-perishables being taken to the St Neots Food Bank. This month our thoughts turn to remembrance which this year is even more poignant as we cememorate the start of the First World War. On Sunday 9th November there will be a short ceremoney by the lych gate in Eltisley before we move to Croxton for a joint service of remembrance. The family service will be held the following week on Sunday 16th November at 4pm. More details of all our church services this month on the back of this newsletter. Looking towards Christmas, on Sunday 30th November there will be a special Advent event to launch Kids Rock, a monthly children’s church for 4-11 year olds. Kids Rock will meet at The Cade on the 3rd Sunday morning of the month from 10am-11.30am. Come along to the launch to find out more or email: [email protected]. Finally, congratulations to our latest 100 club winners: 1st – the Darby family, 2nd – the Cockhead family, 3rd – Mr J Kamper, 3th – Paul Lowther.
