PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT’’SS RREEPPOORRTT

The year of 2001 started with a focus on planning, looking to the future and then looking internally to make the hard decisions and changes that need to be made to keep Brisbane Women’s Hockey the most progressive Association in the state. The path has been laid with the completion of the By-laws. The planning for additional staff in the areas of administration and coaching to meet these changes will need to occur in the coming years. Things simply cannot stay the same and that is simply that. The groundwork for new technology, equipment and a website has been investigated this year and the fruits of this will be seen in the coming season of 2002. Early in our season saw the sudden loss of Paul Morgan. Paul was the chairman of our State Hockey Centre and Legends Community Sporting Club Boards. His support of our centre and to the game of hockey was enormous. He was a remarkable man who will be missed by all who knew him. An area of contention this year was “Umpiring”, yes that dirty word. The formula new look “Umpires Club” will be launched in 2002. The purpose of this club is to provide training, support and mentoring to all. My thanks to those who have given their knowledge and support to make a start on a project that will not be easy, but will be worthwhile in the long run. The Southern Cross Hockey League again ran successfully at the start of the season. This pre season competition is now a tradition and proudly supported by many players, coaches and the centres that make up the South East Queensland region. Brisbane Women’s Hockey, unfortunately, did not host a state championship this year and there are no plans for this in the future. It is a great shame and a dishonour to the tradition and history of our Association that we are penalised because we are in the capital city of a state and this we should all work together to change. On another note, our financial guarantee in the State Hockey Centre was increased this year and again we agreed and signed. We again ran a large summer competition in six-a-side, veterans and mixed. This gave more people a chance to play at our State Hockey Centre, this also gives a big boost to their revenue. The challenge for our sport is sponsorship and media attention, we had the continued support of our valued sponsors – Schweppes, Country Bake, Streets and Vampire Hockey Equipment. Grants from the Brisbane City Council and the State Government were a lynch pin in projects that were conducted this year – many thanks and we look forward to your continued support. Media, this is a hard arena, you only have to look at the last six pages of the Sunday paper to see the challenge we face. With planning and the assistance of several media contacts we will look forward to having a designated person next year to be our contact for all forms of press. Development is an area that has had much discussion this year and I note this from previous reports back to 1997. We will be appointing a Regional Development Officer to recruit players and keep the numbers up. This position will also assist with the training and education of umpires. I must give my personal thanks to our Regional Coaching Director – Sharyn Simpson whose knowledge and insight into the best we can give our players and sport is greatly appreciated.

At the end of our season we lost a Life Member with the passing of Ruby Robinson. A great women and a tireless worker for women's sport and hockey in particular. Her dedication and passion for the game of hockey will be greatly missed by all that knew her. I thank Judy Howard who had worked with Ruby for her contribution to this sport. Thank you to our Administration Team, led by Kathy Duggan, Carly Vincenzi and Amber Sharman. Your dedication and perseverance has not passed unnoticed. Thank you to Ronda Nix, Keith and Jenny Tidey for your expert guidance and encouragement over the year. To the Management Team thank you for the year. To the new comers, I hope you have seen the ‘engine’ room running – but not at full steam! As the biggest Association in Queensland, Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association has an astonishing number of outstanding sports people on and off the field. It is difficult to say thank you when there are so many people to thank…. Thank you to each of you for your contributions and unique insights into what it takes to achieve our goals. Congratulations to all players, coaches, managers, umpires and supporters and we look forward to seeing you in 2002. Robin Roberts

The Annual General Meeting was held on the 31 October, and was well attended. Congratulations to Marilyn Chatfield for receiving her Life Membership. Marilyn has been a tireless worker for many years for BWHA and is still a dedicated volunteer for the Association. Well done Marilyn. In preparation for the 2001 season, a planning weekend was held on 9 - 10 December for us to prepare for the coming season. All the newly elected management attended so that we could set fees, fines and the draft calendar to give to the clubs early. All clubs appreciated it as it gave them time to set their own fees. All Management were issued Administration Folders at the beginning of the year for us to document what each of our positions involve. So that in the future each portfolio will have guidelines to follow. Thank you also to Glenda Vearing who once again put up her hand for President of the Juniors Committee. They were experiencing difficulties with nominations this year and we all certainly appreciate the time and effort Glenda and her team have put in. It was decided also that we should employ extra staff to help the office run efficiently. Kathy Duggan, was appointed Administration Manager and has been of great support to me. Kathy has been working with Mary Cockings, Lisa-Maree Jones and Robin Roberts to upgrade our financial systems to better reflect our position. It has been a big job and it has taken a lot of time and effort on the part of all these women to make it successful. Thank you all. Carly Vincenzi and Amber Sharman were employed to work full time in the office. Carly's hours are Monday to Friday, and Amber's hours were Tuesday to Saturday, which meant we had the office manned on a Saturday,

from reports clubs liked this idea. Amber was with us for 3 months on a full time basis, but left us to pursue a different career. Amber still continued to work on a Saturday. I would like to thank the office staff for all the work they have done over the past season. Carly with her never-ending patience with all my questions. Kathy's experience and knowledge of hockey has been a great bonus to us all, especially me as I took on this position with no experience and with the change of structure with the Secretary's position the office has taken over most of this role. Three wonderful women who were just the biggest support. We look forward to their continued support. Thank you all. A Strategic Planning and Risk Management weekend was run by a consultant and was held on the 2nd December. The meeting was very well attended by all clubs and we thank you for your support. We would also like to thank the State Government for the funding of $5000.00, which enabled us to run this weekend. We believe it was a successful day, which gave us a lot of ideas to work with for the future of Brisbane Women’s Hockey. The Working Bee was very well attended at Downey Park and Rasey Park in March. Thank you to all the clubs who supplied workers, it is very important for all clubs to attend this working bee. Our Groundsman John Bigg has a lot of work to get through at the beginning of the year and this day helps us prepare for the start of the new season. A huge thank you to Bev Broadfoot for the time she takes to help John mark the fields every year. Southern Cross League commenced on the 20 January. Toowoomba and Gold Coast played the final with Toowoomba winning 10 - 0. South Brisbane Scorpions coming in 3rd and North Brisbane Swifts 4th. With the increased numbers in the grass teams this year and clubs late nominations the Grading Committee had a lot of difficulty with Grading games which held up the printing of the fixture book. The turf season started early again this year on the 10th March due to the NWHL being played at the State Hockey Centre. The NWHL ran for two weeks so fixtures were interrupted. A lot of players felt it was too big a break at the beginning of the season. With Burringbar Park turf being finished this year and opening at the end of May. Having an extra turf venue in Brisbane will help the Fixtures and Grading Committee and may solve a lot of problems they experienced at the beginning of the season. A big thank you to you all on a job well done, we know it has not been an easy year. The grass fixtures commenced on the 31st March. It was a great day. Afternoon tea was provided for the Life Members and they all had a lovely afternoon. It is good to see so many attend. With the growing concerns regarding umpiring, Think Tanks were held during the year. A proposal has been put forward to rectify the situation. This is not an easy job and I would like to thank all the people who attended the meetings and helped prepare the proposal. The Constitution Committee has been meeting regularly during the year to finalise the new By-laws in time for the Annual General Meeting. A big thank you to Keith Tidey and his team. A job well done. The National Under 18 Championships were held at the State Hockey Centre with New South Wales and Queensland playing the final. New South Wales won on strokes. Well done and congratulation on a great effort.

With the introduction of Premier League and the new format, we experienced difficulty with nominations for the Open Teams. The team was finally selected and headed up to Mackay where they finished 4th, congratulations ladies. Equalisation has been introduced for Premier League to allow all centres to pay the same amount no matter where the competition is being held. President’s Cup was held this year on the 24th June at the State Hockey Centre after a break of a few years. It was a good day but a lot of mixed reactions from clubs. As it was a very busy year it was hard to find the time to fit it in but all that played had a great day. Congratulations to all winners listed in the Record Section of the Annual Report. Afternoon tea was held on this day for Life Members. Thank you all for coming and I hope you enjoyed the afternoon. The Veteran's Championship was held in Cairns in July. By all reports the ladies had a wonderful time and enjoyed the competition. Results are in the Record Section of the Annual Report. Congratulations to all players who were selected in the Queensland Teams. The BWHA President’s Medal Annual Awards Dinner was held this year at the Parliamentary Annex. The theme for the night was Stars, and they all certainly shone that night. A big thank you to Sharyn Simpson who was our MC for the night. To Jenny Heron, Marilyn Chatfield, Lisa-Maree Jones, Margaret Dilger and all the behind the scenes helpers - Thank You. Congratulations to all the award winners. With this year being the ‘Year of the Volunteer’ we acknowledged three of the many volunteers who help to make our Association the best. Congratulations and thank you for your never ending work - Caroline Schomberg, June Snarski and John Bowkett. Thank you to all the clubs for your patience when we had the beer garden set up downstairs, on the days the Clubhouse was booked. Grand Final day was a great success at Downey Park. Thank you to Lisa-Maree Jones for organising afternoon tea for all our Life Members and Guests. Congratulations to all the Premiers and well done to all runners-up. Grand Final day at the State Hockey Centre was run in conjunction with Brisbane Hockey Association and by all reports everyone had a great day. The competition was of very high standard. May I congratulate you all on your sportsmanship. To all Committees thank you all. You do a marvelous job. To the new Brisbane Secretary I would like to wish you well and I hope you enjoy your term. It certainly gave me a glimpse of the hard work and dedication all the women put in. I would like to personally thank Robin Roberts, Mary Cockings & Jenny Tidey for the help and guidance they have shown me in the past year. Your support has made it a wonderful year and to all other Management members thank you for your patience and support throughout the year. May you all have a safe and happy festive season, and come back next year fit, healthy and ready to play. Bernadette Kingsbury

VVAALLEE

MRS RUBY ROBINSON AM MBE

(Robbie)

23rd June 1911 - 2nd September 2001

The Hockey community was saddened by the death in September of the much loved Ruby Robinson A.M., M.B.E. Robbie is survived by her son, Bruce and her two grandsons. It is fitting that Robbie died in 2001 - "The Year of the Volunteer". “Robbie” elevated the word “dedicated” to a higher meaning. She devoted over 60 years of her life to furthering the cause of women in sport – from her days as a schoolgirl in Warwick to international acclaim as an administrator and her induction, in 1989, into Associate membership of the Sports Australia Hall of Fame – the ultimate accolade for sporting administrators. Robbie began her hockey career at the age of 15, playing for Warwick State High against Brisbane State High School. Eventually her career spanned 65 years – with involvement at club, city, state, national and international levels. It is in administration that Ruby Robinson really made her mark. She served for 40 years as President of Brisbane club Taxation, and BWHA; was President of QWHA from 1950-1986 and AWHA from 1967-1985. As well, she was Australian delegate to IFWHA tournaments and conferences from 1963-1981, and to FIH from 1981-1985. Despite all this administrative work, Robbie remained involved with the game. She gained her All Australia umpires badge in 1952, was a national selector for 12 years and travelled overseas with the national team from 1963-1975. These tours were held every four years and lasted for up to 17 weeks. In a scenario unimaginable today, Robbie was manager, selector, assistant coach to the team captain, umpire, delegate to international conferences, and reporter. For this she also had the privilege of paying her own fare, buying her own travelling uniform and billeting in private homes! One of those tours – in 1972 to 17 countries including South Africa- remained a career highlight for Robbie – along with her trip to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City as co-manager, with Shirley Strickland, of the Australian women's team. Robbie's media career spanned 45 years and typified her pioneering spirit and “won’t be deterred” attitude. She joined “The Courier Mail” in 1946 as a leading sportswoman, but with little experience in the newspaper industry. Her learning curve included paying someone to type her stories – leaving her out of pocket on pay day! This initiative led to a 35 year stint as women's sports editor of “The Courier Mail”, and 35 years with the ABC doing weekly broadcasts and interviews. She also has the honour of being the first woman in Queensland to commentate a live sporting telecast. Robbie did not confine her sporting interests to hockey. She was also involved as a player and administrator in 8 other sports - netball, softball, swimming, athletics, gymnastics, women's cricket,

Page 11: THE SIXTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE WOMEN’S … · Mrs R Robinson AM MBE (Decd) – 1953 Miss B Watson (Decd) – 1969 Miss J Ellis – 1988 Mrs K Langan – 1954 Miss S

11

baseball, and rowing. As well, she served as a member of the National Fitness Council and the Queensland Olympic Council for 40 years and, in 1985, was the first woman elected to the executive of the Queensland Olympic Council. Nor did she confine her voluntary interests to sport! Perhaps less well known is Robbie’s community work. She was very committed to the War Widow’s Guild, raised funds for the Heart Foundation, organized activities for “wayward girls” at the Home of the Good Shepherd, organized the “Sun Girl” competition for 16 years and spoke to service clubs and the CWA statewide. Robbie’s legacy to the sportswomen of Queensland is Downey Park. She was a member of the original committee of the Queensland Women's Amateur Sports Council which secured Downey Park for women's sport in 1959, and was actively involved in the transformation of the area from a dump into the 18 hectares of hockey, netball and softball playing surfaces used annually by over 10,000 sportswomen today. It is fitting that a section of Downey Park has been named the “Ruby Robinson Reserve”. Her name and passionate, feisty spirit will remain forever embedded in the history of Downey Park and the heart of Brisbane Women’s Hockey. Judy Howard

TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT

Every year I open with the same explanation and that is - it is not possible to present final accounts for the year to be included in my written report. A fully audited set of accounts will be presented and distributed at the BWHA Annual General Meeting on 30th October 2001. Many thanks to all committees for their assistance in containing expenditure and also to all clubs for their co-operation and courtesy throughout the season. Thank you to Caroline for a marvellous job in running the bar for another season, all your efforts are very much appreciated. Tom you did an excellent job in the Hockey Shop (with Mum's help) well done. It would be remiss of me if I did not thank Kate and David and their young helpers in both canteens. All the above areas are our sources of income after players registrations and are very important to the overall results at the end of each season. Fortunately for us the proposed increase in rent (from $1200 to $6000) did not occur this season as it is still "under review". We can only hope common sense will prevail. The canteen at the State Hockey Centre is not a great income earner for us but our sponsors Schweppes, Country Bake, Streets and Vampire are still a great support to our association and I thank them sincerely. The GST has a factor in all our transactions this year which also impacted on all clubs. Our major outlay this year was the renovations to the new meeting area and toilets at Downey Park. Thanks to the Queensland Government for their financial assistance with this project. It has certainly proved a winner. We also purchased new uniforms for two Premier league teams. We are now obtaining quotes to upgrade and replace our hardware and software - which is long overdue. Queensland Women's Sports Council has been notified that the Brisbane city Council has granted $500,000.00 and the Queensland Government $105,000.00 for the upgrade and maintenance repairs to the fields at Downey Park. This project will be managed by the Brisbane City Council and they are still investigating how to tackle this enormous task. John Bigg, once again, has done a tremendous job with the fields and hopefully the project mentioned above will make his job easier in the future. I would like to thank both the Queensland Government and the Brisbane City Council for their assistance throughout 2001. Finally my sincere thanks to Brisbane Management for their support throughout the year and a special thank you to Lisa-Maree Jones and Kathy Duggan for the time and effort they put in to updating and improving our accounts systems, reporting, and related matters. Also to Carly for answering all my phone calls. Excellent job girls. I hope everyone will be back next season. Have a safe and happy Christmas. All the very best for 2002.

RREEGGIIOONNAALL CCOOAACCHHIINNGG DDIIRREECCTTOORR ((RRCCDD)) Including Player Development and Coaches Associations

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT It was a year unfortunately, with overall disappointing results achieved at the State Championships. BWHA best successes were the performance of the following: 1. U/15 No 3 Division No.3 State Champions 2. U/11 No 1 Southern Cross Div. 1 Winners 3. U/11 No 2 Southern Cross Div.2 Winners 4. U/15 No 1 Runners-up State Championships 5. U/18 No1 Runners-up State Championships All of our BWHA representative teams should be congratulated on their efforts this year and many team and personal goals were achieved at the State Championships. Once again a lack of finishing was the main reason why better results were not achieved. I might add, BWHA is by no way alone in this predicament. This problem or trend exists not only at regional but State and International level as well. In particular this is evident by our Queensland Scorchers, U/21 and U/18 teams all making finals but not achieving the ultimate goal. Many have speculated on the causes, cures and imagined curse that seems to have plagued us this year. In the meantime, the underlying evidence suggests that mostly we are meeting and achieving our goals. It was pleasing to note that Hockey Queensland made a most popular decision of reverting back to the Under Age State championships rules used prior to 1999. BWHA had petitioned and raised the many concerns with the format used over the past 2 years. BWHA player numbers selected in Qld. Representative teams, Best 16 and Squads was satisfactory, however, we will be striving to improve in this area in the future. Congratulations, to all players recognised for their standard of excellent play achieved by selections in various Queensland Representative Teams in 2001. Other player development opportunities contested during 2001 were: 1. BWHA U/15 No. 4 Team participated in the Southern Skies Tournament. 2. 3 x BWHA supported teams. Combined Clubs, Combined Independent Schools, Combined

Schools Team were able to participate after short notice in Southern Skies Tournament. 3. U/18 Team played against a visiting South African Team. 4. Hockeyroos Skills Day. Jenny Morris and Clover Maitland were able to extend their visit home

for Easts reunion and assisted in a unique start to the U/11 Development Program Day. 5. Minkey Modified Open Day. We were able to make this event memorable due to a successful

funding application and HQ Junior Development Award. Players participated in skills and games at the SHC in conjunction with the Finals of the National Women’s Hockey League. Players received club-coloured water bottles, visors, stickers, posters, sausage sizzle and ice-blocks. They also participated in face painting, jumping castle and were able to get autographs of their hockey heroes.

It was fortunate that we were able to participate in these events as we were unable to attend the U/16 Div2 Championships once again this year. This event now clashes with the State U/18 Championships. Our future involvement in this event is uncertain, as the State U/18 Championships will be held at this time for the next 2 years. Hopefully we are able find other more suitable player development events to participate in. Apart from the Development Programs and Selection trials held for U/18, U/15, U/13 and U/11 age divisions further extension programs were conducted during the off-season for the following: 1. Our U/15 Development Program enjoyed the different format this year. They participated in a

round robin 7-a-side competition and were fortunate to have Olympic Gold Medalist Angie Skirving on hand to present the awards at the completion of the program.

2. 20 x U/13 players, 3 week, 6 session skill development at the SHC. 3. 20 x U/15 players, 4 weeks, 7 sessions. (Content; Specialist skills sessions, Fitness testing,

Nutrition, Speed development, Sports Psychology) 4. 15 x U/18 and U/21 players. Skills sessions Feb-March .2001, Indoor Hockey and Practice

matches. 5. Player development diaries were completed and distributed to U/13 and U/15 Players. 6. U/13 and U/15 Development Squad player’s parents meeting with RCD were conducted if

requested. During the year BWHA have been very fortunate to secure the services of experienced players Tammy Cole and Meagan Thomas in the role of satellite coaches to the BWHA Development Programs. BWHA players have enjoyed the involvement in our programs this year of many Scorchers, and Queensland Representative players. Many thanks to all of them for their continued support and assistance. COACH DEVELOPMENT We were able to attract a reasonable number of coaches nominating for BWHA representative teams. There are many very capable club coaches and support staff doing excellent work within their clubs whom we are hoping to attract to BWHA positions in 2002. Part of my responsibility in the role of RCD is to identify Coaches for prospective representative duties. I would like to make a plea to all clubs that they assist myself in identifying such coaches and contacting me. I am distressed to report the demise of the Coaches Association activity in 2001. There are very many reasons for this, part of which I will take responsibility for as my time and priorities have changed over the past few years. This left extra work to be done by an already over-committed personnel within the committee. I also believe that with the increased and improved services provided by electronic media has made addressing individual coaching needs easier. This in turn has caused the Coaches Association to hibernate and re-address its role within the BWHA association. I am confidant that this will occur in the near future. A huge thank-you to Kym Roberson who has been a great supporter of the Association and has worked tirelessly in resolving the Association position within BWHA.

Additional coaching activities this year were the following:

• 2 x Level One Courses

• Level 0 is currently being revised

• Many BWHA Club Coaches received recognition from the Qld. Government “Thanks Coach, Thanks Ref” initiative.

• “Coaches Locker Room” talks x 5

• Coach mentoring, individual meetings and match observations. SCHOOLS BWHA association continues to support Hockey in schools by providing the following: 1. Recruitment strategies by exposure and promotion through Expos. 2. Education - Providing Level O/Level One equivalent to teachers in schools. 3. Coaches for conducting 4, 6 or 8-week hockey programs. 4. Providing assistance to Regional Sport by selecting, coaching, and managing teams. 5. Coaching, Umpiring, Managing or Selecting School Teams. There is no doubt that the employment of a development officer would improve the current level of support provided by BWHA and clubs. THANK-YOUS It has been a difficult year for myself due to absences from work. Whilst I have been able to pursue my own personal goals participating as a Manager for Junior World Cup Team and Hockeyroos, this meant that adjustments had to be made to cover my absences. I am hugely indebted to Margaret Dilger, Kym Roberson, Carly Vincenzi and Kathy Duggan for dividing and sharing the extra workload that occurred during these periods. Many thanks to members of Senior and Junior Management, for their hard work, co-operation, and dedication in providing an ever demanding service to BWHA members. Also thanks to Jodie Vearing the Minkey, Modified Co-ordinator for her hard work and sacrificing her Saturday morning sleep-ins. Jodie has done this role on top of her school and playing commitments. She has done an excellent job and we have received nothing but praise for her efforts. To President Robin Roberts and Vice President Marilyn Chatfield firstly, many thanks for your continued understanding and support for my role as a Manager for Hockey Australia. Secondly, I look forward to working with you both again in the future to help implement plans made for the 2002 season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sharyn Simpson

Turf Two venues were used this season, State Hockey Centre and the new artificial surface at Burringbar Park. Kedron Wavell Services Club must be congratulated for their support to hockey. The pitch and the venue are rated extremely high, and now Brisbane hockey has room to grow. Turf fixtures for 2001 commenced on the weekend of the 9th of March, and joint finals with BHA were played on the 15th September. This year’s gradings remained the same as the previous year, Division 1 – 8 teams, Division 2 – 10 teams, Division 3 – 10 teams. Divisions 1 had the same clubs as the previous season, 11 clubs applied for division 2 & 3. Grading games were played for Divisions 2 & 3 on 16th February between Ascot 2, SWU 1, Redcliffe 2 and Commercial 3. Redcliffe 2 were asked to play a challenge match on 23rd February against Bulimba 2 and resulted in a draw. Also on the same night Bulimba 2 defeated South Brisbane Eagles in a Division 3 grading game. After all of these games were played Pine Rivers 1 in Division 2 withdrew their team and that allowed SWU 1 to enter into 2nd division and South Brisbane Eagles into 3rd division. Monday Masters commenced on the 26th March and continued through to the 17th of September. Once again eight teams competed and fixtures were played at the new turf at Shawsportz, Burringbar Park and State Hockey Centre. After the trial year of the Intermediate grade it was decided to return that age group to the juniors and fixtures were played at Downey Park and Rasey Park. Team numbers increased from six to nine. President’s Cup was played on a separate day this year at the State Hockey Centre and included our Grass teams. Each year seems to be more difficult in scheduling fixtures, eight drafts of fixtures were presented and still clubs requested changes, some were justified and some were impossible to change. The turf hockey season is interrupted with many tournaments and championships and is becoming increasingly difficult to schedule fixtures. BWHA needs to bring back as much stability as they can to the turf competition. I wish to thank the BWHA management for their support and the members of my committee for their tolerance and making themselves available whenever necessary. Marilyn Chatfield

Grass 2001 was the year when a majority of the clubs wanted a team in Downey Park 1. Twelve teams nominated for this division which then meant that grading games were required to determine who would be in DP1 before we could go any further with the other divisions. On Sunday 11 March at the State Hockey Centre grass fields, 4 games were played in DP1 and 1 game for DP3. The final scores in these games helped with the huge task of sorting out the gradings and endeavouring to be fair to everyone. The affiliations for the year 2001 were

Downey Park 1 13 teams Downey Park 2 10 teams Downey Park 3 9 teams Downey Park 4 11 teams Downey Park 5 15 teams Downey Park 6 5 teams Downey Park 7 1 team

Some clubs requested a grass Veterans division, but alas not enough interest was shown. Lets hope in 2002 Downey Park has a Veterans division again.

A total of 62 teams resulted in 7 divisions – 4 - 10 teams, 1 – 9 teams, 1 – 7 teams, 1 – 6 teams, thus allowing space in two divisions if any extra teams affiliated late. On the whole the gradings were true, the top two-thirds of all divisions were close, it was only the bottom one or two teams that probably should have been in a lower division. The points table in the records section will testify to this. Congratulations to all Minor Premiers and Premiers and if you are looking to upgrade next season, ensure that you get in early with as much information as possible when the Affiliations are due in February. Thank you to Liz Lobb and Di Brodie, my fellow grass fixture & grading members, who were prepared to give up their nights to organise the draw and always available when needed to set games for Presidents Cup, Semis and the Finals. Also a special thank you to Lyn Thomas for her incredible knowledge and guidance built up over many years of service to BWHA and the Fixture & Grading Committee. Jenny Heron

Our usual pre season working bee was very well attended by clubs we thank you very much and remind you all to turn up again next year. It has been a very dry year, so the fields by the end of the season were very dusty. A complete renovation was performed on field 8 this year and was available to be played on in late May. Cosmetic surgery was undertaken on fields 7, 11, and 13 and they were top soiled. Fields 1 and 6 and Rasey Park were all aerated and top soiled. All fields were also treated for weed eradication. As we only have two weeks between the softball and hockey season it does not give us much time to service the fields. But I must say John does a mighty job on the grounds and all the repairs of the nets. He has been a wonderful help during the year and we thank him very much. Ask and he delivers. Rasey Park’s canteen now has a new counter top. The fields as I said before were all treated at the beginning of the season. We would also like to acknowledge the Gap Cricket Club. They have use of Rasey Park for 6 months of the year. Thanks to a State Government Grant they purchased a mower, so they could look after the grass. The lights on field 10 have proven a great success, with the fields being used 4 nights a week for training for Ascot and St Andrews. The House and Grounds Committee tried to meet once a month when it was possible. If anyone is interested in joining this committee next year your help would be most welcome. The Q.W.A.S.C. secured a grant $105,000.00 from the State Government and $500,000.00 from the Brisbane City Council. The Council has formed a committee to look into how the money is to be used to improve Downey Park. Softball and Hockey submitted a joint report on all fields and what we wanted to achieve so we all benefit. Soil testing has begun and we will let you all know when the Council makes their decision. So no work will be done on the fields until we have a final report. Once again we would like to acknowledge Jenny Tidey for her help and guidance during the season. Mary Cockings who we must say did a lot of work behind the scene as we both work and were not always able to be there when needed and Mary was always willing to help us when needed. Thank you both very much. We must also acknowledge Bev Broadfoot who takes annual leave every year to help John mark all the fields and was always willing to come in and help when asked. The Bar had a good year and we must thank Carolyn Schomberg and her attendants for their great work. We are hoping you will all return to help Carolyn out next year. All great reports on the services during the year. If we have forgotten to thank anyone we are sorry. May you all enjoy your break in the off season. Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Well another season has come to an end and this year has been a real learning experience for us all. The year in the Canteen has seen us hire a new canteen convenor Kate Chatfield and a new cook David Powell. Well done Kate and David. I hope your enjoyed your year with us. Samantha Hicks ran Rasey Park canteen this year and did a marvellous job. By all reports everyone enjoyed Samantha's happy nature and efficiency. As usual the canteen has had a profitable year. Thanks to all the support throughout the year it continues to prove a money earner for BWHA. All profits go back into hockey so thank you one and all. As you may have noticed the young ladies in the canteen now wear a uniform, shirts and hats. They look great. To all the ladies thank you for your patience because we were learning as well. I would like to say a big thank you to Jean Hooper and Des O’Connor who were kind enough to lend us a hand at short notice when we were still trying to fill the positions. Thanks to both of you for your years of tireless work and dedication to BWHA’s canteen. Thank you to Joyce Proctor for cleaning the canteen both pre and post season. This was greatly appreciated. Once again I would like to acknowledge Mary Cockings and Jenny Tidey for their help and guidance during the year. You made a hard job seem easy. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you all in 2002.

With the retirement at the last AGM of long time Equipment and Uniform Officer Joyce Proctor and no nominations for the positions in either the Junior or Senior sections a number of people put their hands up to assist in the job along with the office staff. The movement of the equipment, apparel and uniforms in our Association is constant with Representative teams competing from January to October. Different uniforms for some age groups and different equipment needs make this a job that is now too big for one person. The Southern Cross League Scorpions team played in new “singlet” style shirts. Thank you to Sharyn Simpson for organising these. In 2001 a new competition “Premier League” saw new uniforms purchased. We thank Country Bake and Schweppes for there assistance in purchasing these. Thank you also to Marilyn Chatfield and Margaret Dilger for designing and ordering. The Open Team, Veterans, Under 15 and Under 18 teams all used the same uniforms, which meant they were allocated, worn, collected, washed then re-issued seven times from May to October. The time may now be due for additional uniforms, but this of course is a financial issue. The Under 13's used the old style uniforms which are fast running past their use by date. The U11's continued with the shorts and T-shirt tops. I sincerely thank all the team Managers for their assistance in organising the distribution and Bernadette Kingsbury (Seniors) and Glenda Vearing (Juniors) for their help in this area. Joyce Proctor, although retired, also came in and helped whenever asked and we thank her for that. As with the uniforms each team needs balls, markers, water bottles etc, these again are distributed and returned multiple times through the year. The apparel is an essential part of our identity when travelling, and new style "Polo Shirts" were introduced in the Seniors. These sold very well. In the Juniors, board shorts and new style polo shirts joined the wet weather gear available for purchase and demand was very high. We thank AC/DC for their tolerance in supplying orders at short notice it was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Glenda Vearing for organising these new junior items, the girls loved them. As per past practices the U11 Southern Cross Team who play a one day tournament, were allowed to purchase polo shirts and shorts. The Junior Committee could consider re-introducing a "Sweat" shirt again for this young age group. The apparel for all selected teams, requires ordering, packing and distribution, an enormous task for just one person. I again thank Glenda Vearing for ordering the Junior apparel and Mary Cockings for ordering the Senior polo shirts. Glenda and her Junior committee worked tirelessly to get the Junior teams outfitted and I thank them for their efforts. Thank you to the Senior Team Managers for organising their teams. The office tried were it could to cover the shortfall and midweek requirements and we hope we assisted the Team Managers in this. All in all the teams were dressed and well presented at all tournaments and State Championships and the U11's looked a treat at the Southern Cross. But the need to better organise this area of our association is great and I ask all clubs to talk to parents (particularly those who have children playing

Perhaps with a little better structure twenty heads working in a streamlined area could achieve very easily what for the already overworked Management members and Team Managers is another load they should not have to carry. The By-Laws are nearly complete although we have requested the approval of the near completed document to allow for the calling of Officials and Standing Committees at the Annual General Meeting (The changing of By-Laws call for a special resolution at any Council Meeting). The Officials and Standing Committees were in the old Rules of Association and when the new Rules were passed last year the provisions were not in the existing By-Laws and therefore do not exist. Although we requested the approval of the near completed By-Laws to enable the above to happen we are still open to continue on these By-Laws to there completion. We are hoping, in the new year, to call a meeting of all interested persons from all Clubs to discuss the final document for any ideas as to its final presentation. I would like to thank my fellow members, Ronda Nix, Mary Cockings, Jenny Heron and Meg Brodie for all the help and assistance given during the past year, also thanks to President Robin Roberts for her attendance and advice given at our meetings. Another year – another steep learning curve! From originally being appointed to allocate Downey Park umpires, I ended up allocating Turf umpires as well, initially temporarily to Easter, but eventually the whole season while Sue Whatman was delayed in completing her Ph D. Allocating 88 umpires each week proved a tremendous challenge, with some relatively quiet weeks and other very harrowing weeks. I think I have heard every possible excuse there is in existence for umpires not wanting to do their games! The job is really too big for one person, especially if they have a full-time job as well. While BWHA has some responsibility for providing umpires for matches, each player and particularly, each Club also must share the responsibility for encouraging, coaching and supporting their umpires – or there will be no matches! The majority of umpires and players do take their umpiring responsibilities seriously, and as usual in these circumstances, the minority spoil it for the rest. In particular, the practice of giving money to the Time Steward who must then call for a volunteer umpire while the allocated umpire then feels her responsibility is over, and she is immune from fine and/or suspension, I feel, is the worst practice of all, because it is the easy way out, and then shifts the responsibility to BWHA, when it should be her own, or at least her Club’s responsibility to find a replacement if necessary. Despite that, there have been several stalwart umpires, without whom the games could not have gone ahead each week, these umpires doing 2, and sometimes more games each week. A BIG Thank You to Kim Thomasson, Kym Ireland, Janelle White, Liz Lobb, Caroline Schomberg and Ruth Bloxham – you are all treasures! Thank you also to Robin Roberts and BWHA Management for their constant encouragement and support, especially when things were tough, and the biggest Thank You of all to my friend, Lyn Thomas, without whose constant support and encouragement, I doubt I would have survived the season. I sincerely hope that the BWHA Umpires Development Plan drawn up this year will eventually lead to Umpiring in Brisbane regaining its high status of a few seasons ago, sharing the limelight with playing and coaching. Once again, we have experienced a very disrupted season with, at first, a break for the National Hockey League and the Under 18 Australian Championships and then, for some, a lengthy interruption for the Under 21 Australian Championships. The closeness of the competition in many grades, with semi-final teams not being decided until the last fixture day, once again endorsed the very difficult decisions made by the Fixture/Grading Committee. Congratulations to them on a difficult job well carried out. For the first time since its inception, this years League program was disrupted by wet weather, flooding and an unplayable field. As the schedule was already extremely tight due to the early start of the National Hockey League, the re-allocation of games was not an easy task. However, with two mid week games being played and the semifinals moved from the Saturday to the Sunday of the penultimate weekend, the full program was completed on time. As requested by Hockey Queensland, the experimental “Limited Players in Defensive 25” rule was introduced midway through the league. After some initial concerns for both umpires and coaches, there was a smooth transition to the new playing condition. I should like to express my sincere thanks to all teams, coaches and umpires for their ready acceptance of this change part way through the competition. All teams, except Top Guns, were disrupted after the third round when eleven players departed for Perth for Junior World Cup Selection Trials. Congratulations to the Sunshine Coast on their new turf and their efforts to have everything ready for a huge double header of men’s and women’s league competition. They even managed to organise fine weather. The low point of the League occurred in the last round robin matches and in the semifinal round when players confronted umpires after the game. It must be stressed to all centres that this behaviour will not be tolerated in any circumstances. During the competition, there were a total of nine green cards and one yellow card issued by umpires. It appears that, once again, some players were not aware of the automatic two minute suspension rule for a green card. The following are suggested points for discussion prior to next season: 1. Rules for substituting players after original team nominations:

Australian Representative duties Serious injury Goal Keeper Other

Perhaps a form for withdrawal of one player and substitution with another could replace letters. 2. Player of Series – Rule to determine winner if equal on points Consider if number of times points awarded should be used instead of the number of “3” points awarded. 3. Eligibility for Semi-Finals and Finals There again seems to be some confusion – it is important that all managers and coaches are aware of the rules.

JJUUNNIIOORR PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT’’SS RREEPPOORRTT

2001 has been a wonderful year with our numbers growing across all age groups, the largest increase being the Under 11 division. The number of players taking part in Brisbane development programs and selection processes has increased. This has been great but has brought with it difficulties which are currently being addressed by our Regional Coaching Director, Sharyn Simpson. Sharyn has spent a lot of time this year working with players at all levels and working to develop coaches. With the increase in the standard of players we need to ensure our development of Coaches is continued if we are to continue to be successful. Throughout the year I have had many discussions with club representatives and parents. Not all have been constructive but most educational and with the intention of improving our processes. It has been difficult for some people to distance themselves from club predetermined ideas and look at the wide view. But for us to remain successful we need to be able to overcome this and be seen to be flexible. Our playing numbers have increased but the number of parents, with children competing in this age group sitting on management has decreased. We need more people to get involved, with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. So don’t worry about not knowing the history or being new to the game, we were all novices at some stage. It can be great fun and very rewarding, but not when numbers are low and the workload becomes life consuming. I would like to thank Marg Tupper, Alyson Aleksic, April Parmenter, Sharon Easton, Louise Hollitt and Glenys Harten for taking on far more than should be expected of any volunteer. But as all positions on management were not filled this year extra work fell on willing workers. All of these wonderful ladies held positions with their respective clubs, and between them have a wealth of experience but we need to keep them and the best way, is not to work them to death in the first year. It is important for the development of players, umpires and the association that all clubs are represented on management, the wider the input the better prepared we can be to deal with all matters that may arise during the season. It is a pity that in most situations due to lack of numbers we become re-active instead of pro-active. Thank you to members of the fixtures and grading committee (Diana Young, Kaye Pulsford and Beverley Ragonesi) for the time given to this task. Made even more difficult when trying to meet all requests put forward by clubs across all age groups. As you would imagine this task is almost impossible, requiring a lot of time and commitment but becoming even more difficult with the increasing numbers, shortage of fields and umpiring options all of which need to be considered when doing fixtures to enable development of our game. During this year I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of parents and have been very impressed with their comments and offers of help. It was interesting to get feed back and I must admit that a lot of the ideas put forward were great but once again not maintainable with the lack of people in volunteer positions. It was great that the offers of help came forward but we need the assistance in the organisation stage not when its apparent something has not been done. We have some very skilled and dedicated staff both in administration (Kathy and Carly) and player and coaching development (Sharyn Simpson), put that together with a strong player base and great club structure we should be going from strength to strength. But no matter how much time these

people put in they cannot do it without the support of volunteers. So I encourage all parents to take the time to get involved. The kids like to have you there and if we have enough people on management it will give all volunteers the opportunity to watch and enjoy their own children play. After all that is why we are here. I thank you for the opportunity and the enjoyment of being on Junior Management for the past 4 years. I would like to congratulate all incoming committee members on their appointment and wish them well for the 2002 season. Glenda Vearing

JJUUNNIIOORR TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT I am starting this report off with the reason why the Juniors were unable to get any reports this season. It was decided at the beginning of the year that we would combine the Junior and Senior bank accounts into one. This eliminated bank charges from two accounts and with the restructuring of the Administration office it also meant reduced hands on work as the computer system has been converted to BWHA accounts with the Juniors as a sub committee. The Juniors have their own cost centre and object accounts within the accounting package. In 2002 the Juniors will have more control over their own accounts with reports being available on a monthly basis. We are still organising the structure and have a few more meetings to finalise the procedure. The hockey shop this year made a profit of around $2000.00. I would like to see a bit more stock that the players need rather than a lot of dead stock on hand next year and this will hopefully bring in more revenue for the juniors. I have found this year to be as enjoyable as last year was. I would like to see a few more players, parents etc get involved in the running of the Juniors. I believe this would not only help the Junior management but it would also open your eyes on how much work and commitment it takes to keep everything going. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the administration staff Kathy, Carly and Amber for all their help during the week and on Saturdays. Thank you for this year and I will see you all in the 2002 season. April Parmenter

The Season commenced with a colourful display of hockey teams representing their respective clubs. It was wonderful to see so many junior girls taking part in the March Past on the first day of fixtures. Congratulations goes to South Brisbane Eagles Hockey Club again, who were the winners of the March Past in 2001 as they were in the previous season. I would like to see a carnival type

atmosphere, adorn the Downey Park grounds to promote our Olympic sport! Needless to say there would be some work involved in this but well worthwhile, as we need to continue the growth of our beloved Hockey! It all starts here in the junior ranks! The weather was very kind to the hockey season this year, as was certainly not the case the previous year. No fixtures were rained out and consequently most fixtures ran according to plan. Double Headers ran most successfully with many clubs taking advantage of combining their clubs for a luncheon/picnic on the Saturday. The intermediate grades were well represented this year but we would welcome an increase in the number of teams! I would like to see these grades have more field time at Downey Park. Whilst I realise the number of fields are limited, these young ladies would be grateful I’m sure if they had the exposure to Downey Park and so give them the recognition as all other clubs receive each Saturday. Placing them at Rasey Park and field 13 most Saturdays keeps them away from the atmosphere of Downey Park hockey. They too need the exposure and support from us in building their esteem and hence keeping them “happy” so they will continue to play hockey throughout their later teenage years, again keeping players on the field and the strength and growth in Brisbane Women’s Hockey! Nurture and Promote! The Under 13 and Under 15 Championships were most successful again and a full report will be in the Secretary’s Report. Under 15 at Bundaberg and Under 13’s at Maryborough. I had the privilege in attending both of these events and may I say what a wonderful display of hockey from our young ladies. They did Brisbane proud both on and off the field! Under 11 Southern Cross, what a terrific display of hockey from our younger girls and all coaches and managers did a great job and all our teams were very successful indeed. Some young and new coaches to Brisbane this year and some new faces in the managers’ ranks as well. This is what we like to see, some new “blood” and with them all, new ideas and this again will promote growth and strength in our sport. Congratulations to all concerned in these events. Jodie Vearing performed her task as Minkey Modified Co-ordinator at Rasey Park with much gusto and vitality! Well done! Jodie is a young lady who certainly has a passion for the game and who most certainly has junior girls hockey at heart. Their Skills Day held on the last day was most exciting and very well organised and well run. Coaches have enjoyed the season at Rasey Park and so too have many parents, not to mention the girls whose hockey skills were of a very high standard which was obvious on the skills day. Well done to all who contributed to our “Hockey Babes” for this season! Sharyn Simpson gave up much of her time this year to help out our young ones and graciously presented ribbons on the day! Thank you Sharyn for all your help and support for the year. Fixtures may need to be looked at for the J1 grades, being played later in the season, as the school hockey has a great bearing on fixtures at this particular time of the year. As the school does not “kick-in” until late in our season, the girls are committed to fulfil their role for their representative schools, but also their club teams! Coaches have a formidable task to try and hold their teams together which is particularly difficult as we are coming into last fixtures preceding finals! Maybe a change in days eg: Sunday or evening fixtures. Whilst we all realise this will impose on a lot of people eg: BWHA voluntary staff etc, we look at this very carefully. Hopefully our “think tank” will come up with some sort of resolution. The initial “think tank” held at our last council meeting was met with great enthusiasm and was very successful and all clubs will be notified of the follow up of this as another meeting will take place shortly. Many issues were raised eg: umpiring, fixture times, intermediate grades etc. Clubs are all asked to rally with BWHA and lets get our heads together to solve issues and not bounce off each other and not get anywhere except hearing negative comments! Work together to stay together for our girls in Junior Hockey! TEAM WORK!

The umpiring talk held at Downey Park on an evening this year, was most beneficial. Kim Thomasson chaired the meeting and gave much needed support for all our up and coming umpires. I must agree with Kim, Clubs must take responsibility for their umpires and constantly hold umpiring courses throughout the season and monitor their members and give support on the sidelines at fixture days. Pre-season umpire sessions must happen to introduce all our girls into the game of umpiring and teach them not to be afraid of this role that is also very much part and parcel of being involved in their respective clubs. Umpiring goes with the “territory”. Talk of an Umpiring panel has been mentioned and hopefully this will take form and all umpires will feel even more confident to take on this role. Girls must be taught that umpiring is a privilege and not an arduous task. Thanks to Alyson Aleksic for doing such a great job as the Junior Umpire Convenor. Alyson again had a mammoth task this season (while heavily laden with child and monitoring Josh’s whereabouts!) during the course of the Saturday fixtures. An exceptional lady who does an exceptional job, we will certainly miss her next season, as Alyson takes time out for motherhood. Alyson tried in vain to hold sessions on umpiring but the response was poor and so all clubs need to look carefully at this situation and make changes and introduce junior umpires to our game. Well Grand Final day came soon enough and another season drew to a close. All teams performed admirably on the day with St Andrews taking out the Best Club Trophy for 2001. Congratulations! So much talent displayed at Downey Park on our fields by our players, so many great coaches with so much enthusiasm and knowledge of the game. The weather was fantastic all season and I’m sure we are all a little disappointed that the 2001 season has finished. But with many people willing to partake in next season in any little way, will ensure the next hockey season will be bigger and if possible better for our young up and coming players, administration staff, umpires, coaches, managers, selectors and all who are concerned with junior hockey. In closing I wish to express my thanks to all who I have had the privilege to be connected with through BWHA Junior and Senior and thank you all for making my 2001 season a most enjoyable and memorable journey. I have gained many new friends and acquaintances and most of all have learned so much more about our beloved Olympic Sport! CONGRATULATIONS to all! I wish each and every one a Merry Christmas and the brightest of New Years! See you all next season. Yours in Hockey Glenys Harten

JJUUNNIIOORR UUMMPPIIRREESS RREEPPOORRTT The year began with thirty-four (34) nominations of people who wished to be tested for their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge. This lead to problems being able to accommodate these people for their three (3) required tests around playing, coaching and other duties they had. I had a team of assessors who were on a roster to help me for which I am truly grateful. They were Caroline Schomberg, Catherine Costello, Louise Woodford, Jo Argent, and Fiona Chatfield. These people gave up some Saturday mornings to help me with the testing which freed me up to deal with any other problem that may have arisen.

The nominations for Brisbane representative umpires closed at the same time as the players did so we used some of these to umpire the selection trials. This is a great resource to be able to give feedback to the up and coming umpires who wish to go on further with their umpiring. We only received five (5) nominations for the two championships when we required six (6). This lead to opening the nominations again which found us the required numbers. Pia Horsfield, Kiara Reilly and Krystelle Leeming went to the Under 13 Championship at Maryborough where all three received their Queensland Junior Umpires Badge. Kylie Jones, Janelle White and Lauren Richards went to the Under 15 Championship at Bundaberg. All three (3) were successful in achieving their Queensland Intermediate Umpires Badge. Since we held the U11 Southern Cross Day at Downey Park, we needed to cover our quota of umpires and other centres umpires. Thank you to all the umpires who gave up an hour, a couple of hours or the day to umpire. The umpires for the Under 11 Southern Cross were all new umpires who were going to receive their Brisbane Junior Badge this year. With the new system of umpiring your own club up and running, it was interesting to see the difference in standard of umpiring throughout the grades. Clubs were more conscious of who they put on their own games. This raised the standard of the umpiring and also controlled the abuse that some umpires received. This system continued until the beginning of July. This system did not work on the J1 division. When we reverted back to the old system, there were a lot of umpiring mix ups or clubs not forfilling their obligations. The abuse from the sideline was a lot better than last year. An umpire's exam was conducted at Downey Park for all girls playing J1, J2, 13A, representative hockey or being tested for an umpires badge. This was well supported by most clubs with girls receiving their results in a two (2) week turn around. Many thanks to the people who took some papers to mark. The standard of umpires for the semifinals and finals was high and I would like to thank all of them for their professionalism and the time that they gave. Also to the umpires who I called on late in the week to replace another one. Congratulations to the twenty-two (22) girls who received their Brisbane Junior Umpires Badge this year. Congratulations to Lauren Richards for receiving the Vicki Spice Memorial Shield. Congratulations to Elise Kenny for being named the Most Improved Umpire for 2001. Some problems that I encountered this year are listed below.

• The times of grades that I test on went from three (3) timeslots to two (2). This lead to a lot of troubles with J1 players having to receive three (3) tests around their playing.

• The draw of J1 – some teams had a lot of similar times. These need to be carefully looked at in the future.

• The time frame of the umpire’s exam. Should it be earlier in the year?

• When do clubs want umpires courses conducted – before, early, middle or end of the season?

• Girls who play J2 can not be tested on J2 games. Maybe a split timeslot be considered between J2 and J3 divisions.

I would like to thank everyone who umpired this year and I hope that you continue to improve and learn as you umpire in the future. Thank you must also go to Brisbane Junior Management for their help throughout the year and for everyone who looked after Joshua for me so I could continue my work on the grounds. Thank you to all the club officials who have also helped me and also promoted umpiring in their club. I wish the next umpire’s convenor all the best in the running of the umpires at junior hockey. There are always capable people to help and guide you if required. Alyson Aleksic
