APALA GHAR, a NGO managed by LATE VAIBHAV PHALNIKAR MEMORIAL

FOUNDATION, established in 2001 by Shri Vijay Phalnikar and Mrs. SadhanaPhalnikar inmemory of their only son Vaibhav who died of cancer, started in a small way by providing free

awards which are conferred on individuals or NGOs working for the benefit of the needy. Eachaward consists of a memento and Rs.5000/- in cash.

When Leukemia snatched away Vaibhav from his parents Mr. Vijay and Mrs. Sadhana

Phalnikar, they braved the loss very courageously and determined to turn this tragedy into an

    opportunity to serve the humanity.

In this endeavor, they were helped among others by noted artists Shri. Suresh Wadkar, a

reputed singer and Mrs. MrinalKulkarni a famous TV and Cine artist. A free ambulance service

for the benefit of the poor was started in early 2002. The Trust helped 20 students financially byway of scholarships. ApalaGhar, a home for economically backward parentless children was

    Activities carried out :

    1. Home for Destitute Children/Elders at Donje

This project was conceived with the idea to rekindle the grand parents/grand children bondage which

has gone for a toss in the modern nuclear family system. Destitute elders shunned by their kin areowned and accepted by us. 10 such elders housed at our Donje unit enjoy the benefit of shelter, food

and affection of the tiny tots. They also happily partake in all the Social activities organized by us.

    2. Smt. Kausalya Karad Gramin Rugnalay

Many villages in and around Donje lack a primary health care centre. This prompted us to start

a primary health care centre in the form of a Rural Hospital. We provide free medical treatment

including medicines to farm workers and tribals of these villages. The hospital is equipped with

two examination rooms, two wards with 3 beds each, an operation theater, Labour room, drug

store and other facilities like pantry etc. Besides basic medical aid our doctors are experienced

to treat patients who suffer from heat stroke, dehydration, etc.

So far we have extended this free medical facility to more than 1500 patients and our hospital

has become a support for more than 30000 villagers who are assured of primary health care.

The X-ray & ECG facility at our centre is the only one available for these villagers.

    3. Vocational Training Centre AtDonje

The vocational training centre is equipped to train our children in various activities like Carry

bags and flat file making, Dhoop manufacturing, Herbal Phenyl making, Book binding,

Disposable containers/plates/bowls made out of aluminium foiled sheets, Offset printing etc.We are extending these training facilities to other rural below poverty level children and

women free of cost. Trainees coming from distant rural areas are provided food and

accommodation free of cost during the training.

Some of the socially and economically backward women trained by us in stitching and

embroidery work have successfully started their own income generating activity. So far more

than 400 women and 100 children from backward areas have benefited by our training.

The staff strength is of 65. All of them have been employed in Full-time capacity.

    5. What are the human resources/ manpower problems that you face and how do you tackle it?Because of such large number of Full-time employed people, there is no such constraint

    currently.

    6. Are you facing any problems regarding space constraints in your premises? There are 2 CampusesWarje and Donje. Total area available is of about 20,000 square-meter{20 Guntha}. Hence there is no such space constraint recently.

    7. Which are the projects that you have currently undertaken and which are the projects that youintend to undertake in future?

The current projects are as follows-

    i) Home for Destitute Children and Elders at Donje

ii) SmtKausalyaKarad Rural Hospital at Donje

iii) Vocational Training Centre at Donje

iv) Centre for Destitute Children at Warje

Road for the Donje Campus. The Cost for this activity was about 4 Lacs.

Further, as a CSR activity, same organization also built 6 rooms for the Children and Staff.

Earlier, because of problems related to Water-supply, Shriram Transport provided for Bore-well

and Water-treatment facility at cost of 2.5 lacs.

    13. Strengths of organization.Strong community support towards funding.

Vocational Training Centre has helped in Horizontal Integration.

Elders participation is a step towards Vertical Integration.Elders also participate towards daily operations.

    14. Weaknesses of organization. No open Promotional Activity.

    No political patronage.

    No Government Aid.

    15. Opportunities for organization.Increasing Capacity of Campus.

Expanding Hospital Activity towards Specialized treatment.

    More funds via Promotional activity.

    16. Threats for organizationSelf-sustaining model is pretty delicate, as it depends on donations from regular donors only.

Educational activity is carried out because of support of a School. So there is a slight probability

that higher fee maybe charged in future.

    17. How do you manage payment of your employees? As sufficient donations are received, the sundry payments and salaries are met through them.

Further, the staff is allowed to stay on Campus for free, hence no additional expense on part of

    employee is required for housing.

    18. Are the major NGOs trying to over shadow you/ troubling you?No such instance has been recorded as yet. They themselves are one of the best-managedNGOs.

Their personal approach is also not Competitive, but is focussed only towards welfare of destitutes.

    backward section of the society.

    Recommendations:

o Promoting electronic transactions and generation of online Donation Receipts.

A receipt is generated for any donation ranging from Rs 1 to any amount. Thisreceipt is generated upfront in case the donor comes to their office. In other cases

however, the receipt is also delivered to their homes after collection of cheques. We

recommend that an online facility where donors can request for donation to

ApalaGhar. The concerned authority will approve or reject this request. Once the

request is accepted the donor can make online payment and online receipt will be

    generated.

o Fixed deposits to ensure future. The NGO accepts sponsorship for children at ApalaGhar. The NGO has successfully

been able to get sponsorship for all 35 children there and also has surplus where

donors are willing to sponsor the expenses of children but have to wait for next year

when possibly there would be a vacancy. Instead, we suggest that FD/ RD/ post

Office Deposits be created for children. This money may be used in situations like

marriage of girls or future emergency requirements for the children.

o Promoting Entrepreneurship spirit among the children. At the NGO the children are given apt education, living and a traditional culture is

developed in them. The NGO also carries out activities like making paper bags/ caps

etc. we recommend a detailed programme for the children to develop

entrepreneurship skills in them. Certain business related exposure may be given to

the students to inculcate a sense of entrepreneurship and would make them self

employed than search for employment. Doing so will help them build a concrete

career for the children along with their education.

  • 7/28/2019 The Social Project

    13/13

    APALA GHAR -

o Building Fund for promoting competitive spirit in children. Many donors are rejected on account of fulfilment of the requirement. Instead of

rejecting, a fund can be created for promoting sportsmanship and competitiveness

amongst children. Children performing exceptionally well in exams like

    NTSE/MTSE/Scholarship exams/ PravinyavaPradhnyashodh/Kaprekar exam /

National level Sports etc may be awarded.

The funds may be accepted as deposits and intrest on the deposits could be kept as aprize so that the prize money is given every year.

In case there is no one to claim the prize that year then that money could be used as a source to

buy educational material/sports equipments as predecided mutually by the donor and the

    management of apalaghar.
