4th Grade UpdateUpdated 1/27/17

Science/Social Studies TECHNOLOGY/ENGINEERING/ PBL

In social studies, the students are learning about the Northwest Ordinance. They’ve been using the Social Studies Weekly newspaper as a reference.

Heat energy was the focus in science class this week. We learned about the ways to transfer heat through conduction, convection, and radiation. The students enjoyed participating in learning stations that displayed these concepts.

This week we started our new PBL on health and wellness.. We will be partnering with Lake Health as we explore:Why is it important to establish habits that promote a healthy lifestyle? How can we inform the community and give recommendations for community members to live a healthy lifestyle?

Currently, the students are involved in making a google slides presentation on analyzing, comparing, and researching food labels on products.

ELA MATHMrs. McKito’s class has finished reading folktales and identifying theme during ELA classes. Drama will be the next genre covered in class.

Mrs. Goodrich’s and Mrs. McCullough’s class began reading the novel, The Sign of the Beaver. This historical fiction novel correlates with our Native American unit that we studied. The students are enjoying the book so far!

Mrs. Goodrich’s class continues to study patterns and order of operations. Mrs. McKito’s class has started the chapter on fractions.Mrs. McCullough’s class is almost finished up with Expressions and Patterns. The chapter test will be on Tuesday, Jan. 31st. Fractions will be the next topic.

The BAM FAM SOI 5th Grade 2017

STEM News: If you want to participate in this year’s Invention Convention, make sure you have your “Intent To Invent” form turned in ASAP. See Mrs. VanArnhem if you need a form or have questions related to the challenge. Next week in STEM, we are going to take a look at some of the necessary traits of engineers and explore their skills through challenges.

Highlight of the Week: Our Alien Space Lander Mission was a success….in most cases. Some of our aliens perished or definitely got a nasty bump on the head, but ultimately, our student designs were insightful and creative. Students were required to test their designs from 1’ and 2’ off the ground to see if the “aliens” would remain safely inside the lander. Some groups were able to test in the stairwell for a maximum height challenge. The aliens awarded the kids with Tootsie Pops for their outstanding efforts!

Math: Accelerated Math finished rates and ratios Ch. 1 and presented their Budget Bonanza Projects. Myers’ Math Class is learning about fraction Ch. 8 and is working on Contract #4 which is posted in Classroom..ELA: Students began writing their plays as part of our “Out of This World” PBL.. All important elements of dramas must be included, so check out the rubric on Google Classroom under ELA.Social Studies: The kids are continuing their studies of ancient civilizations…..Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas, including a CSI Investigation about what happened to the Mayans. Science: We are studying the planets in our solar system. The Solar System Unit Test is next Thursday.

The students have been working on Standard 1 & 2 and all the benchmarks for movement patterns and using manipulatives to perform fitness movements and skills. The students have been demonstrating these movements within our hockey unit. The 3rd and 4th grade we challenged with a series of stations to practice the standards and the hockey skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting the hockey puck. Movement towards mastery of these skills will continue thru this unit and going forward into 2017.
