The Solar System (online lab) Due
12/5 @ 11:59 pm
The Solar system includes the sun, planets that orbit the sun, and the moons of those planets. There are other substances found inside the space of the solar
system but we are going to concentrate on these. This is an internet research lab.
You are to surf the net and find the information requested.
Sun:Find a photo of the sun and paste it to this lab.
What is the composition of the sun? Mostly Hydrogen and Helium, but also contains
small levels of Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Silicon, Magnesium, Neon, Iron, and
Sulfur.
What is the temperature at the surface of the sun? 5,500 degrees Celsius.
What is the internal temperature of the sun? 15,000,000 degrees Celsius.
What is a sunspot? Occasional spot of darker color on the Sun, caused by cooler
temperature in that region.
What is the size of the sun? The diameter of the Sun is 1,391,980 kilometers.

Give a paragraph describing the reasons for removing Pluto as a planet.
In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union set an official set of
criteria that must be met for a celestial body to be classified as a “planet”. This
criteria is as follows:
(1) The object must be in orbit around a star, while not being itself a star.
(2) The body must be massive enough for its own gravity to pull it into a nearly
spherical shape.
(3) The object has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
Since Pluto could not meet the third requirement, it was reclassified as a “Dwarf Planet”. The other eight planets’ status remains the same.
