Our Elders have just started reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s classic book Life Together.  This book is an exploration of what it means to live together in Christian community with all of our character flaws, disagreements, and shortcomings.  You might recall that Bonhoeffer was executed in 1945 by Nazi Germany for speaking out against

Hitler and the Third Reich.  He founded what became known as the “Confessing Church.”  Bonhoeffer says that a community built on the love of Jesus Christ must be different than other communities.  “Without Christ there is discord between God and man and between man and man.  Christ became the Mediator and made peace with God and among men.  Without Christ we should not know God, we could not call upon Him, not come to Him.  But without Christ, we would also not know our brother, nor could we come to him.  The way is blocked by our own ego.  Christ opened up the way to God and to our brother.  Now Christians can live with one another in peace; they can love and serve one another; they can become one.”  A minister friend of mine in Texas recently said that the Disciples way of doing church is becoming a dying breed.  By that, he meant that having a church where we agree to disagree and respect each other’s differences is becoming rarer and rarer in our culture.  Christian tribalism seems to be the norm.  Bonhoeffer talks about the difference between the “spiritual realm” and “human community.”  He says, “In the

spiritual realm the Spirit governs; in human community, psychological techniques and methods.  In the former naïve, unpsychological, unmethodical, helping love is extended towards one's brother; in the latter psychological analysis and construction; in the one service of one’s brother is simple and humble; in the other service consists in a searching, calculating analysis of the stranger.”  Bonhoeffer identifies the difference between human love and spiritual love.HUMAN LOVE: Directed to the other person for his own sakeSPIRITUAL LOVE: Directed to the other person for Christ’s sakeHUMAN LOVE: Desires the other person but does not serve himSPIRITUAL LOVE: Both desires and serves the otherHUMAN LOVE: Has contingenciesSPIRITUAL LOVE: Has no contingenciesHUMAN LOVE: Is an end unto itselfSPIRITUAL LOVE: Comes from Jesus Christ and serves him aloneHUMAN LOVE: Lives by dark desires to control othersSPIRITUAL LOVE: Lives in the light of service ordered by the truth

Bonhoeffer says, “Human love can never understand spiritual love, for spiritual love is from above; it is something completely strange, new, and incomprehensible to all earthly love.”  Living life together as a Christian community is never easy, but it must be grounded in an ongoing attempt to grasp spiritual love which includes forgiveness, peace, reconciliation, and service.  This is Christ’s call for those of us who claim to be his followers.  As humans we always fall short, but we must never stop trying.

Blessings,

Life Together Dr. Clay Stauffer

It is not for me to convey the thoughts and experiences of the 17 Woodmont members that traveled to Guatemala last week to visit with our Unbound partners and the many friends with whom our congregation has formed relationships over the past ten years. What occurs to me this Monday morning - 36 hours after our return - is the profound meaning of the word unbound and the

far-reaching wisdom that caused our partners to choose this name for their organization.

It is certainly true that Woodmont’s ever-growing support of young children, the elderly and their families in this beautiful country to our South has helped to unbind many from the yokes of poverty, hunger and hopelessness. Indeed, this is no small thing! However, to come face-to-face with untamed smiles, to witness tears of joy and to be embraced in the arms of gratitude is to become aware of one’s own yokes - whatever they may be - and to begin to unbind ourselves, as well.Give, and it will be given to you: A good measure, pressed down, shaken

together, and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you (Luke 6:38).

Unbound! Thom Schuyler

The goal of the Gilead Group is not to debate issues or theology but to turn our hearts toward God and to listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit as it is moving in our lives and in our church today.
