Art by Tyler CarrollTyler Carroll is a senior at Bronxville High School and a member of our EYC. This artwork is a reflection on his experience at Taizé. In it you will see the cross of Taizé, worn by many of our teens. This cross expresses a unity of symbols - cross and dove. It is a symbol of God’s reconciling work through Christ, continued by the Holy Spirit. As such it is a powerful symbol for the work we are called to do in the season of Lent.

The Bishop Is Coming . . . Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation (and YOU)!

Bishop Donovan is coming to Christ Church on Sunday, May 1! And that means that it’s time for the adults in our parish to consider three important options pertaining to membership in the Episcopal Church, as well as the deepening life of faith. So, if: (A) You have been worshipping at Christ Church for a while and would like to formalize your membership in the Episcopal Church; or (B) If you are a long-time member who would like to renew your faith commitment with the blessing of the bishop, please consider participating in one of the following:The Rite of Confirmation is for those adults who have been baptized in a Christian tradition or denomination that does not define itself as “catholic” or “apostolic” (so a bishop was not involved). For example, this rite would be applicable to persons coming from the Reformed tradition.Reception is for those adults coming from another Christian tradition that is “catholic” and “apostolic”—so it is appropriate, for example, for persons

coming from the Roman Catholic Church.Reaffirmation is for members of the Episcopal Church, already baptized and confirmed, who wish to make a renewed commitment of their baptismal vows. It is especially appropriate for those who are returning to the Church after a time of absence or who—following a period of study and reflection—wish to deepen their commitment in a public way.Participants in our Fall Sunday Shorts Series, Inquiring and Discerning Hearts, are particularly encouraged to participate. But all are welcome. A special meeting to discuss the service and to review the Baptismal Covenant will held on [DATE?]. If you want to participate, or if you have any questions about these opportunities, please contact Father Bird ([email protected]) or Mother Lamborn ([email protected]) or through the parish office (914-337-3544).We look forward to celebrating these important occasions with you!

Choir Tour to PhiladelphiaOn March 4, ten of our treble choristers departed for a weekend in Philadelphia. Saturday was spent sightseeing at the Franklin Institute, food at the old Reading Terminal, a meal at Hard Rock Philadelphia, and a visit to the Wanamaker building (now Macy’s) to hear and see the world’s largest pipe organ. On Sunday March 6, another contingent of choristers – teens and adults – joined at Christ Church Philadelphia to sing for the morning service. Christ Church Philadelphia is often referred to as “the birthplace of the Episcopal Church” and we had the opportunity to worship in a church that used to have Betsy Ross, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin in their congregation.

Later that afternoon, while the teens and adults pre-pared to sing Evensong at St. Mark’s, Locust Street, the trebles received a rainy walking tour of the his-toric district by a native of the city, Fr. Michael Bird. All joined at St. Mark’s for Solemn Evensong before facing a near monsoon on the drive home.

Tour Participants: Holly Castle, Deborah Cook, Jane Hoffman, Jack Redpath, Ken Richardson, Brian Seirup, Alleigh Thoms, Jason Thoms, Wilyem Thoms, Alaya Martin, Adrienne May, Hyuga Takagi, Carol Bartold, Sakura Meyers, Kristopher Jean, Brandon Hornsby-Selvin, Patrick Hewes, Claire Kraemer, Johanna Rabsey, Caroline Beit, Allison Barker, Vienna Pentikainen, Charlotte Prior, Lily Nesvold, Vance Wood, Christina Leska-Kent, Christopher Wells, Vaughn Mauren, and Fr. Michael Bird.

Easter Flowers and MusicHelp bring the gift of flowers and music to Christ Church Bronxville this Easter. Donations are accepted in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving for blessings received. We are diligently keeping costs to a minimum during this difficult economic time, but Easter expenses for symbols of the Resurrection (flowers and music) are significant!

Canticum Novum Singers return to Christ Church

BronxvilleSaturday May 7, 8:00PMThe acclaimed Canticum Novum Singers, conducted by ASCAP and American Composers’ Alliance award winner Harold Rosenbaum, will give a concert here at Christ Church, on Saturday, May 7, at 8 PM. The program features liturgical and secular works by the Renaissance composer Josquin des Pres, of whom Martin Luther said, “He is the master of notes; they must do as he wills. As for other composers they have to do as the notes will.” Canticum will perform Josquin works both secular and sacred, including his amazing Missa La Sol Fa Re Mi -- a polyphonial setting of the Mass Ordinary built around a recurring sequence of those five notes. Rounding out the program will be madrigals by Monteverdi, motets by William Byrd and Bach’s sublime Lobet Den Herrn. The Canticum Novum Youth Choir will also perform. Tickets at the door are $15

Global Mission

Sunday March 20, 2011 was Christ Church’s 5th Annual day of outreach.

Each year, Christ Church parishioners devote one special day, Global Mission Sunday, to answer our Christian call to service by focusing on the needs of others in our community, from feeding the hungry to preparing Easter baskets for children who might not otherwise share in the joy of the holiday.

On March 20, this year’s GMS began with an early morning trip to NYC to feed the homeless. Led by silver-tongued Mike Conaton, volunteers overcame such obstacles as police barricades and streets blocked for a mini-marathon to reach their ultimate destination.

After an abbreviated 10AM service featuring the combined voices of both Young at Arts and the Christ Church choirs, the congregation divided to take on the day’s projects. Shepherded by Father Bird, some headed to Harlem’s Church of the

Intercession to help in its restoration, while Jim Sutton guided others to the Bronx River to clean-up following the massive rains of the past few weeks. Back at CCB, volunteers

prepared a meal for the men of Fessenden House, separated socks for Midnight Run and donated food to the United Interfaith Food Bank. And not to be forgotten, our

younger members assembled baskets and decorated Easter cards for the children of Thorpe House.

Taizé Reunion DinnerApril 4th, 7:30PM RSVP by April 1stFamilies of the teens who traveled to the Taizé monastery are invited to join youth group on Monday April 4th at 7:30PM. Maundy Thursday Lock-In April 21st, 7:30PMIt has become a beloved tradition of the EYC to spend all night Maundy Thursday at the church, sitting with the Blessed Sacrament, singing Taizé songs and praying in silence. The group also decorates the Paschal Candle to be lit first on Easter and again throughout the year at times such as baptisms. The EYC will meet begin with the Maundy Thursday church service at 7:30PM, then gather in Taylor Hall. Teens should bring a sleeping bag, pajamas and $5 for dinner. Please RSVP for the lock-in by April 15th.

The Committee for Global Mission would like to thank both our project leaders and all who participated to help the lives of others and to steward our environment. The day served to remind us of how much we can do when we join together, and how little time and effort it takes to have a huge impact on someone else’s life, whether it’s volunteering just one day or giving of yourself throughout the year.- Ken Richardson
