This past Holy Week,Notre Dame Cathedral inParis celebrated its 850th

Birthday. To commemorate this specialoccasion, the Cathedral was gifted with a

new set of bells. On Palm Sunday thebridges and gardens around the Cathedraloverflowed with people to hear the firstringing of the Cathedral's new bells. Notsince before the French Revolution havethe bells pealed in perfect harmony.During the Revolution, all of the bells, except the famed Emmanuel Bell, weremelted down to make cannons and coins.

There is an Easter tradition in Francethat on Good Friday all of the church

bells, "Les cloche volants," fly to Romecarrying with them all the grief and painfor Christ's suffering and death. The bells remain eerilysilent for three days. On Easter morning the 'flying bells'return, ringing for the resurrection of life and laden full withgifts of chocolate bells and decorative eggs for all. Christiansopen up their windows and crowd into the streets to celebratethe pealing sounds of hope. The bells ring to remind everyheart that God is and will always be a God of resurrections, life not death, and unfathomable love.

For centuries, the French have joked that the bells ofNotre Dame have rung off-key. But not this Easter Sunday! With the faithful Emmanuel Bell at the helm, the flying bellsof Notre Dame returned on Easter Sunday pealing in perfectharmony so that all would know that God was and willalways be with us.

Every year, we each do our best to participate in Lent, walk the holy road from Palm Sunday to Good Friday andthen shout with joy, "He is Risen, He is Risen, indeed" onEaster morning. But how do we keep the bells ringing therest of the year? How do we live in such a way that theEmmanuel Bell continues to peal in our souls reminding usthat even on our darkest day, there is still hope?

How do we live each day with the confidence of Easter -believing in resurrections, percolating miracles, and a faiththat joy will come in the morning, even after our darkestnight?

Love is the answer. It always was and will always be. Wecannot escape what happened at Golgotha, nor should we

ever want to - it's the most beautiful example of sacrificilove of all time. One's willingness to give up their life fanother, for many. Although, we aren't called to stretch obodies out on a cross, we do owe God to make our livcount for something. Love requires sacrifice. Our Creatallows us a measure of freedom, imagination, and creativiin how we love. Some of us feed, some of us embrace, somof us mend, some of us speak love words and some of forgive. Sadly, all of us often misstep and love poorly. Bthat's part of the Easter message too - God's willingness give us another try, and another try to ring the bells tuckdeep inside the belfry of our souls.

Like that faithful Emmanuel bell in the Notre DamCathedral, may our souls ring in faith, so that all will knowithout a shadow of a doubt the Easter message - that lowins!

    Live in Hope,Farrell

In 1999, a song by the band New Radicalshit the radio waves with a bang. The songwas called "You Get What You Give." Itturned up on the hit music charts around the

world with its infectious power-pop melody and insistentchorus: "Don't let go, you got the music in you; One danceleft, the world is gonna pull through; Don't give up, you got areason to live; Can't forget, you only get what you give."

I love that song--I love the message that we can sing, dance and give of ourselves as we build meaning in this lifetogether!

In May, Stephen and I will have been at Woodmont for 3years. What a bunch of singing, dancing, and joy we haveshared together with our church family in that time. Over andover again, I see first hand that Woodmont is undoubtedly

one of the most giving congregations I know. Woodmofolks take the call of Christ tosharevery seriously!

Week after week, a group of about 16 rotating volunteegives generously of their time and creative energy put together The Bridge worship service. The liturgy developed in tandem between the staff and the congregatiduring the week, and shared on Sundays. This gift of timand talent allows for our Sunday worship service to ofon-going creative expression, and helps all who comthrough our doors experience God through the arts.

Week after week, I look at the mission giving aoutreach of our church and am amazed! Hands and heaworking together to feed people, build houses, visit tinfirmed, and offer caring responses through programs lDivorce Care and Stephen Ministry.

You Get What You Giveby Andra Moran, Creative Director for "The Bridge"

There's no Sunday of the year like Easter.Such great crowds of people. Such beautifulcolors, flowers, clothes and music. Such a

spirit of joy and celebration. After Easter you feel like you'vebeen to the mountain top.

But, what happens the next Sunday. The Sunday afterEaster is often referred to as "low Sunday" in the church.

That's low attendance Sunday, especially compared to thenumbers there on Easter. Many preachers take this Sundayoff because the contrast in attendance dampens their spirits. As I always say, on the Sunday after Easter the Easter liliesare gone, but the perennials are still here.

So, where do we go now after Easter? What do we do?

Where does the Bible go after Easter?

The answer's easy. The Bible focuses on the resurrectedChrist. And John's gospel has the most post-resurrectionappearances of the risen and ever-living Christ. Matthewtellsus how the women at the grave were the first to know Christwas alive. Mark tells us about the women at the grave, thenhow Jesus meets two disciples, then the eleven disciples andgives them the "Great Commission." Luketells us about thewomen at the tomb, the two on the road to Emmaeus, and thesudden appearance of Jesus to his disciples in the UpperRoom.John tells us about the women at the tomb, a specific

appearance to Mary Magdalene, the sudden appearance in tUpper Room, this time with "doubting Thomas," and tdisciples fishing on the Sea of Galilee.

The important post-Easter question is, "Who meets trisen Christ, and will it include you?" The Risen Chris more likely to appear to those who read the Scripturepractice regular prayer, let the Holy Spirit work in themparticipate in the life of the Church and the Sacraments, shain Christian fellowship, engage in Christian service, and haa sense of expectancy. More specifically, the Risen Chrappears to those who love, those who are sincerely penitethose who mourn, those who are bewildered but genuinesearching, those in distress and despair, those who dou(like Thomas), and those who are sincerely struggling w

    their faith.

Where do we go now at Woodmont? What do we after Easter? Right away we begin our annual StewardshCampaign, seeking to underwrite our growing ministry Christ for another year. And if you've truly met the RisChrist, you will be most excited about it.

I could go on and on, telling stories about each of theministries of Woodmont and the giving folks who generouslyshare with our church. The bottom line for me is this: Weekafter week, I read the Spire and see how many gifts we havebeen given at Woodmont, and praise God for how many giftswe get as a church family!

I guess that New Radicals song is right:You get what

    give!

As we begin our work for the Stewardship Campaign, Ilike to say an advance thank you to each one of you for ayou've done this past year. I'd also like to request that yospend some time in prayer and contemplation about what it you have to give back to Woodmont. I know that for me aStephen, we have been blessed beyond measure to be part this place, and it's a joy to share our "3 T's" (time, talent antreasure) with Woodmont.
