The biannual conference of the Christian Church (Disciplesof Christ) was held last week in Orlando, Florida. Knownas "General Assembly," the conference is an importantgathering for our denomination, representing nearly 600,000people in nearly 4,000 congregations. No doubt you willremember when the last General Assembly was held inNashville two years ago considering our church lent nearly

400 volunteers help make it happen! Time after time, whensomeone asked me where I was from, the answer "Nashville"prompted a smile and a memory from them about howwelcoming, warm, and friendly our city and our church werewhen hosting the gathering two years ago.

General Assembly is important for a variety of reasons(including personal ones for me since I met my wife,Merillat, at the Indianapolis General Assembly in 2009).The conference is a "family reunion" for our denomination inwhich thousands of ministers and laypeople from all over theworld come together for worship, meals, and fellowship

(which our Woodmont delegation was actually able toparticipate in this time around since we weren't busy hostingit in Nashville). Moreover, it allows ministers and leadersalike to share ideas, learn about new trends in churches, andbe reminded what a privilege it is to do ministry.

The assembly also serves as a time to conduct and voteon the official business of the denomination. As acongregationally-governed church, resolutions at the

assembly are not binding for individual beliefs anpractices of local churches. However, it is fascinating to sthousands of people voting democratically to encourage thchurch to speak up on certain issues facing our country anour world today. Perhaps of the greatest interest were thuplifting reports of the Disciples House at Vanderbilt anthe Historical Society (two treasures in our own backyarda recommitment by our denomination to plant 1,000 necongregations by 2020; the addition of West MemphArkansas into our own Tennessee region; creating a sampparental leave policy for congregations (recommendminimum of eight weeks leave when a baby is born); anthe affirmation that churches should be a place of grace anwelcome for all people, no matter the differences that dividus.

Although Woodmont naturally sent a smaller delegation thwhen we were hosting in Nashville in 2011, the four of u

who went benefitted greatly. Our church should take priin the fact that our very own Andra Moran and StepheDaniel King led worship and music each night befothe entire assembly. As they do each Sunday night at ThBridge, their artistic talents created a powerful worshexperience for everyone gathered to glorify God. MargQuinn also represented our church in Orlando on part her tour as a "Peace Intern" for the Disciples camp anconference program. Margie has travelled all over thcountry this summer visiting places like Bethany Hills share a message of peace and love (one she no doubt begato learn at Woodmont).

If you are interested in attending the next General Assemblstart making your plans to attend the Columbus, Ohgathering in the summer of 2015 and Indianapolis (odenominational headquarters) in the summer of 201Woodmont is entitled to send around twenty voting delegatto each assembly, so there will be plenty of room to havyou join us for the denomination's next family reunion!

A man joins a monastery and is onlypermitted to say two words every 7 years.

After the first 7 years, the elders call him inand ask for his two words. "Cold floors," he says. They nodand send him away.

7 more years pass, and the young monk is called in. He clearshis throat, "Bad food," he says. They nod and send him away.

7 years pass, and the young monk is called in. When askedfor his two words, the monk replies, "I quit."

"That's not surprising," the elders say. "You've done nothingbut complain since you got here."

I read this joke in an email that my dad sent to meand ofcourse, I laughed. Later, as I thought this joke through, it became

particularly poignant, because both of my parents always harpedon us to be mindful of the words we said in our family, and inour lives.

If you had to sum up your life in two words right now, whatwould they be? Some guesses: "I'm tired." "I'm content." "I'manxious." "Good life." "Change stressful."

For me personally, I would say all those two word phrases woube my choices on different days in the last week.

There are two words, though, that are on my mind and in mheart so often, that it's surprising I didn't think of them firstmy musings about my own two words. How about this 2 wo

    phrase:

    "Thank you."

These simple words are powerhouses of change and promiserenewed perspective of the goodness of God, even in the motrying times.

1st Thessalonians 5:18 reads, "Give thanks in all circumstancfor this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

Consider trying out this phrase in your prayers today. Use it wyour family and your friends. Spend a few moments wonderiabout whether there are ways you need to thank or encourayourself. Breathe in gratitude, breathe out peace and hopAmen!

    Dear Woodmont,

Kintsugi is the ancientJapanese art of repairing

broken porcelain with goldlacquer. It is said to have originated in the late 15th century whenthe Japanese Emperor sent his damaged pottery back to China to

be repaired. He ordered it not to be mended with the traditionalmetal staples but instead with gold. It has since become a

beautiful art form. The idea is that the object in questionbecomes more beautiful from having been broken.

We were each created as perfect pieces of porcelain, a trueartist's masterpiece. Sadly, it only takes a matter of breaths hereon earth before life sets about to test the strength of our being.

Slowly, often imperceptible to the human eye, we endure littlefissures to the surface of our spirits. We learn quickly that to livefully into our humanity means that we must endure brokenrelationships, broken dreams, broken promises, broken bodies,

broken faiths, a broken world all around us. The art of faithbecomes learning how to mend our brokenness so that we cancontinue to move forward and fulfill our holy purpose here onearth. Unfortunately, some of us mend the cracks with metalstaples. We turn to alcohol, throw money at the glaring chinks inour soul's armor, or resort to bitterness and despair. We forgetthat only the Beloved can mend our souls with gold.

How many times have you met a person who has suffered aendured the worst life can throw at them and somehow thmysteriously glow gold...they are more beautiful because of th

brokenness. They are stronger for having been broken.

I find myself drawn to the broken, not the ones with the me

staples, but the ones who glow with resilience. They trusted Gto see them through the darkness, the hurts, the despair atenderly mend their broken parts with gold. It is in their ve

brokenness that they become transformed into these brilliant aauthentic "light-bearers" in our world. They prove that therenothing more beautiful than a resilient soul.

There is no avoiding the cracks in the porcelain of ohumanity. Life will make us weep. We will suffer a brokheart. We will lose people we love. We will know intimately tfragility of our bodies and the bodies of those we love dearWe will endure periods of darkness and wonder where God It is part of every human story. And yet, the Master Pot

    promises to mend in gold!

"Hope is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of

the heart; it transcends the world that is immediately

experienced, and is anchored somewhere beyond its

horizons. It is not a conviction that all will turn out well,

but the certainty that all will make sense, regardless of

    how it turns out."-Vaclav Havel
