THE SPIRE

From the desk of Pastor Suzanne Davis. . . . .

One special day to honor our mother’s is coming this Sunday, May 8th, and we will do so in both of our worship services. This day was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in 1872. She organized Mother’s Day meetings in Boston every year as a day dedicated to peace. She tireless-ly worked for justice throughout her life. She fought aggressively for the woman's right to vote and struggled to liberate women from the traditional confines of home. She wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. As we remember it well, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord”.

Mother’s Day became offi-cial nationally in 1907 when Anna Jarvis from Philadel-phia began a campaign to establish it in America and by 1911 it was celebrated in almost every state. Presi-dent Woodrow Wilson in 1914 made the official an-nouncement proclaiming Mother’s day as a national

holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sun-day of May.

It was to be a time for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country." By then it had become custom-ary to wear white carnations to honor departed mothers and red to honor the living, a custom that continues to this day.

We hope all mothers will join us this next Sunday as we honor and thank them for the many ways they have touched the lives of the children.

HONOR THY MOTHER

The moment a child is born,

the mother is also born.

She never existed before.

The woman existed,

but the mother, never.

A mother is something

absolutely new.

Project Transformation Celebration Sunday, May 22nd

Please sign up in the hallway for the luncheon to benefit Project Transformation. The program will begin at 12:15 with a silent auction, bluegrass mu-sic, and more! Phil Roberts will be our Master of Ceremonies!

Volunteers can sign up on May 22nd to listen to one child read. Our three days to read are July 25-27 at Southern Hills UMC. We will be volunteering to read with a child from 10am-12pm. Orientation will be from 9:30-10:00 am. Thank you for your support!

THE CHILDREN AT THE HAPPY CHILDREN'S HOME OF CHINA THANK YOU!

What a marvelous celebration we shared April 23rd of our district's mission, The Happy Children's Home of China! Thanks to New Haven UMC for your continuing support for this home! Thanks to all who came to the dinner or sent donations. Thanks to Regina LaGrone for creating the invitations and devising a way to combine the children's folded roses with a Chinese lucky knot, so each person in attendance could take home a gift from the children! Thanks to Nicole Grafton and her flute students to setting the stage at the beginning with love-ly music! Thanks to Pastor Cindy who closed the even-ing with a prayer and a touching letter of grati-tude written jointly by several of the children! Thanks to Adriaan and Marianne Duiveman whose leadership of the board's planning committee for the benefit was remarkable. The Happy Children's Home children were beautifully honored at this event, with love, good food, fellowship, and fantastic entertainment. As you heard, "It's All About the Children!"

SENIOR SUNDAY ~ MAY 29th!

If you or a family member are graduating this spring from high school, college, technical school, or any other school of higher learning, please send a pic-ture of the graduate and a short bio of where you are graduating, your major, and your future plans. Please email this information as soon as possible to [email protected] so that we can share your accomplishment in our Spire article. We will recognize you in church services on May 29th and have a cake to honor and congratulate you between the services in the hallway.
