GALA DAY Next Tuesday 14th August all of our Year 5 and Year 6 students will par ticipate in an inter school sports competition known as a Gala Day. Students have received information regarding the sport and team they are in and have been training. The sports will include oztag, european handball and volleyball. We are looking forward to be taking part of an event which provides the opportunity for full participation of all students. All Year 4 students will participate in a Gala Day back here at St Anthony’s. The teachers have organised them in teams for an intraschool competition.

BOOK WEEK 2018 Book Week is in Week 6 with our book week parade on Friday August 24. This year’s theme is Find Your Treasure. Many of us have a book that we have treasured from childhood. Have you shared this book with your children? Parents can make a big difference to a child's interest in reading by sharing their old favourite books. Children see and feel their parents' passion when reading a book they are emotionally connected to. Sharing a treasured book can lead to sharing so much more – children love hearing stories about their parents when they were little!

REDLANDS EISTEDDFOD Last Wednesday and Thursday night both our Junior Singers and Senior Choir performed at the Redlands Eisteddfod. They competed against schools in the area, both Catholic and State Primary Schools. The Senior Choir came first in their competition and the Junior Singers came third. I would like to congratulate all of the students on their performance on the night and also acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Mrs Heather Francis.

APRE NEWS - Mrs Kellie Jacobsen

Dear Families,

Tomorrow is the Feast day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. She was born in 1842 and died in Sydney in 1909. St Mary of the Cross is Australia’s first Saint. She is the Patron Saint of the Archdiocese of Brisbane and founded many schools across Australia to provide an education to the poor and those in most need. She led a life of great courage.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop went through troubled and humble beginnings. Her one desire was to do God’s will and help those in need. She was the eldest of eight children and met the burden of having to be responsible for helping her mother to provide for the family. Throughout Mary’s childhood, many people lost their homes due to poverty. A deep sense of hopelessness was always acted by Flora’s (Mary’s mother) sense of hope – the idea that God will provide. This became a core belief of Marys and it served her throughout her difficult times.

Her famous quote: “Never see a need, without doing something about it.”

The faith and trust in God that Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop lived by; is a model for us all. We continue to follow in Saint Mary’s footsteps showing trust and gratitude in God. Please join us tomorrow as Prep J lead us in a prayer parade focusing on Mary MacKillop’s life .

“ When I could not see my way, God kept my heart full of trust to make all come right.” (1883)

Confirmation Candidates: This weekend some of our Year 3 students will be making their Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second sacrament of initiation. A Sacrament is a visible sign of God love, it allows us to experience God and helps us to grow in relationship with God. The students in their workshops have been learning that in the Sacrament of Confirmation they confirm their belief in God and their willingness to live as Catholic Christian people by renewing their Baptismal promises.

At Confirmation students receive the Holy Spirit and the many gifts and fruits of the Spirit that help us in our life journey.

Some of these gifts are: fortitude, knowledge, understanding, piety, counsel and fear of the Lord. Students have learnt that the Spirit gives us fruits and they are: love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

We pray for all of our students making their confirmation this weekend. I look forward to seeing many of you on Sunday morning.

Thank you to the school community for suppor ting the Deanery appeal to assist Rosies, BABI and Night Ninjas. Your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated.

INFORMATION EVENING FOR ALL PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS SEPARATION WORRIES AND ANXIETY

Wednesday 22nd August at 6:30pm, there will be an information evening on 'Separation Worries and Anxiety'. For many students and families, this an issue that can make saying good-bye on school mornings very challenging. For some children, it starts at home before they have even left the house, as they engage in all sorts of strategies to avoid going to school in the first place. Research shows that non-attendance at school, including in the lower years, can have a significant impact on a child's academic and social development. Even if this is only a minor problem for you and your child, please come along and learn from an expert about techniques and insights that can assist in making getting our kids along to school a whole lot easier. Guest speaker Peta Burns from Child Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) will be delivering this information session. For questions about this event please contact Kathy Casley, Guidance Counsellor.

SCHOOL FEES

School fees for Term 3 are due this Friday, August 10. Prompt payment of all outstanding fees would be appreciated.

LEARNING AND TEACHING NEWS - Mrs Bridget Devantier

LEARNING IN YEAR 3

There have been squeals of delight from Year 3 this term as they have begun their exploration of the WeDo 2.0. Robotics program. This program, designed by the Lego company, allows the children to design, build and program Robots.

In doing this they are extending their knowledge of not only robotics and coding but also developing many skills that help them to become successful lifelong learners. They are using their curiosity, developing essential communication skills, working creatively and in collaboration with each other, and using their all-important critical thinking skills in a fun and exciting way. It was very obvious when I popped into 3M that while they were all problem-solving and discovering how science, technology, engineering and math affect their everyday life they were also having a great deal of FUN!

“We’ve put blue tooth in and we are experimenting with sound. Ours doesn’t just move it makes noise too. A race car, a dolphin and a bouncing sound.” Isaac and Sam

“My favourite part was the whole thing, I loved building them.” Kelsey

“We missed a piece out so it keeps going around in circles, we had to pull it apart and start again, it all good now.” Tash

“We’re using the WEDO program to build with, you need really strong fingers to put the wheels on and other small parts to make them work properly. Now I’m figuring out how to program it and connect it to blue tooth.” Haylee

“Working together was the best part, we had a little problem, we had to work together to fix it.” Penny

PARISH NEWS

CONFIRMATION PROGRAM, 2018

Since last week, lots of young families with their children have been preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation by coming to our weekend Masses. They usually stay back after 9.00am Mass for some activities aimed at adequately preparing the candidates for the sacrament. Within these few weeks, we will do our best to brighten the tiny light of faith already burning in their hearts. This requires lots of attention and interest from the candidates and support from their families. We congratulate the families involved in this program for taking the step to keep faith alive in the hearts of their children. Faith is a basic hinge of our society that is worth being properly handed down to the next generation. We also congratulate the candidates for accepting to be part of the program. We encourage the parents of our candidates, especially those who rarely identify with us to consider participating more actively in our parish life. God might be inviting you to strengthen your relationship with our parish through this program. We understand how difficult parenting has become these days. All the same, providing religious experiences for young people is still an important aspect of parenting. Your little effort might yield an abundant result. Moreover, there are lots of good young families in our parish who are willing to befriend and accept you. Many lasting friendships and relationships have been built within our church communities, just as many people have also rediscovered their spiritual strength within our community. Finally, next weekend our candidates will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. Monsignor Peter Meneely will lead the celebration at St Luke’s at 6.00pm Mass on Saturday, while Bishop Joseph Oudeman will lead at St Anthony’s at 9.00am Mass on Sunday. May the Holy Spirit fill us with His gift.
