Father’s Day Liturgy and Breakfast On Wednesday, 1st September, we celebrated Father’s Day with a Liturgy and breakfast in the Paul Rafter Centre with our Year 7 & 8 students. We reflected upon the fantastic gift, work and care we see in our fathers, grandfathers and families. They enjoyed breakfast with a cup of tea or coffee, followed by a tour of the College by their son or daughter. Thank you to all staff and students involved in the preparation and organisation for our Liturgy and breakfast including:

• Miss Rachael Thomson, Acting Head of Home Economics, and Year 11/12 Hospitality students for their hospitality.

We hope you all have a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday. Mr Andrew Donaldson Assistant Deputy Principal Campus Ministry

Our College community has done an amazing job with the collection for the Winter Appeal. The collection was picked up by Mr Warren Ford from Vinnies and other volunteers, to be taken to the central warehouse. All food and toiletries collected will go to local families in the Clarkson Parish. Thank you so much to all students, staff and parents who contributed and made it another successful drive.

‘Once again, many thanks to all of you at Irene McCormack for a big Winter appeal. The solid donations of the student body will make a big difference to what Vinnies can offer to families in the Clarkson area. The food makes more funds available for other needs. This is very much part of what Pope Francis calls 'a movement of people who know we need each other, who have a sense of responsibility to others and the world’. Regards and blessings Warren Ford

20 Year History Book Launch and Celebration Sundowner On Thursday, 26th August, current and former staff came together in celebration of our College 20 Year Anniversary. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces, and recall great memories and celebrate special friendships. The College History Book was officially launched at the event and is now available to purchase at a cost of $10 from the College Reception or complete the online order form. https://www.imcc.wa.edu.au/images/events/20_Year_History_Book_Order_Form.pdf The history book, authored by Mrs Rosalie Richardson, reflects her passion for the College and her relationship with staff and students, past and present. In 2019 discussing how the College would celebrate 20 Years of Quality Catholic Education in 2021, Rosalie passionately embraced the task of writing the College history and has since energetically made the idea a reality. Rosalie joined the College staff in 2008 and has been responsible for Semilla, the high standard College Yearbook, since 2013. We thank all who have assisted Rosalie, including Foundation Principal, Mr Paul Rafter, members of the McCormack family, staff, students, parents and friends of the College, who have provided accounts of their time and experience at the College. Thank you to Mrs Kim Boscarino, book editor, and Mr Rob Bouwman from Red Ladder Media for design and print.

Yanchep National Park As part of our Senior Service we have engaged with Yanchep National Park to offer a rewarding and meaningful service experience. It will give the students a sense of accomplishment and maintain a continuation of the environmental stewardship. A number of our Year 10 students have already been part of this program, and the feedback from the students and the volunteer group at Yanchep National Park has been very promising. Students engage in revegetation, clearing hiking tracks, monitoring wildlife and their habitats, counting and documenting different wildflower species, and re-potting native plants to be used for the revegetation. Photography by students Danika Calo 12GA and Ciara Mack 10EB Over the course of the term, students have been donating items and selling raffle tickets, with all funds being donated to Wheelchairs for Kids. Thank you to Mrs Tammy Johns who collected the items and made up 26 hampers. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets. We raised over $550. Thank you to staff for their assistance on the night and to this year’s coaches Miss Eve Basson, Miss Ally McGaw and Ms Meg Rudman for their commitment to the extra-curricular troupes and for creating memorable pieces. The choreography was outstanding and our students are blessed to have the opportunity to work with the coaches this year.

Careers Expo Excursion

Last Thursday, 20 Year 12 Career and Enterprise students visited the Skills West Careers and Employment Expo at Perth Convention Centre. Students were able to access all the stalls and gain information on trades and apprenticeships, as well as TAFE and University courses. Industry groups, such as BHP, gave seminars to students on specific industries such as mining, and students were able to ask the presenters questions and make valuable connections. Mr Mat Davis, Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9 & Mrs Helen Gray, Social Sciences & Economics Teacher

Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour Competition

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Tahlia Stokes in Year 9 has entered the State Final of the 2022 Premier’s ANZAC Student Tour Competition. Tahlia’s Social Science essay, with a Western Australian perspective, on the topic “What would it have been like to grow up in a family affected by war?” was entered earlier this year, and to have made it to the State final is a huge achievement. As part of this competition, 10 lucky students from across the state travel to Albany and Darwin in April to learn about the ANZAC legacy and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin. We wish Tahlia the best of luck with the next stage of the selection process. Miss Jessica Varady Social Science Teacher

20 Year Celebration Soccer Clinic

Last Monday we welcomed a wonderful group of Year 5 and 6 students from St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School to participate in our 20 Year celebration Soccer Clinic. The Soccer Academy has been a part of Irene McCormack Catholic College for a number of years and to celebrate its success, we invited the primary school students to take part in a workshop. The young students participated in a number of fun drills and games, to see what it would be like in a Soccer Academy class. It was great to work with the younger students, and to witness their passion and enthusiasm. St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School Physical Education teacher, Mr Zach Waddell, also joined in and took part in the fun and games. It was brilliant to see the students enjoying sport just as Sr Irene did and I hope we can continue to build the Soccer Academy for another 20 years. Thank you to students for attending, and a special thank you to parents and staff at St Andrew’s for helping to facilitate the event. Ms Shawn Billam Soccer Academy Coordinator

No Limits Indoor Soccer

A fantastic addition to our CAS sporting calendar has been the introduction of our No Limits Indoor Soccer Team on Tuesday afternoons. This team has been such a joy to bring together. We congratulate Emilio Chrisostomou, Nikora Davis, Isaac Liwszyc and Sebastian Lyon on their representation of our College against Mater Dei and Lake Joondalup Baptist in recent games. Our season has been short, but we are in the process of trying to organise some more games, and we would welcome any new students interested in joining us. Thank you to Year 10 student, Bree-Anna August, for her terrific support of these players. She is enthusiastic and very giving of her time, and we can’t thank her enough for her help. Thanks also to Ms Billam for her help – the students and parents have certainly appreciated it.

ACC Athletics Update The build up to our Carnival on Friday ,17th September continues with training in full swing. It has been pleasing to see the majority of the squad taking the opportunity to attend the many training opportunities on offer during the week. Our squad has now heard on several occasions that non-communication and non-attendance at training, will likely result in their place being offered to the next athlete in line, and unfortunately we have some students placing themselves in this position. Staff do a lot of following up and running around after students, which is necessary and important. It reinforces the commonly held belief that someone will always be there to hold our hand, and with the bigger picture in mind, this is an approach that generally hinders more than it helps. A big focus of our sporting program this year has been asking students to take responsibility for communication, and for a minority it is proving a difficult step in their journey to adulthood. It might be a painful lesson to learn, but unless communication occurs, team members can expect to be replaced. As we all know and understand, the real world operates in a very similar way, and appreciating the consequences of not communicating now, will arguably hold our students in good stead further down the track. Checking messages, reading schedules, and actioning the things discussed in meetings will go a long way towards self-improvement in this area. Mr Ben Dyer Head of Sport

E-cigarettes and Vaping There has been a growing concern in Western Australian schools about the incidence of vaping, the use of e-cigarettes. We are concerned about the possibility of long-term health consequences for students who may be vaping. The use of e-cigarettes could also have legal implications with the sale and supply of e-cigarettes products. Information about these issues can be found on the WA Health Department Website - Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) (healthywa.wa.gov.au) If you are concerned about your son or daughter using e-cigarettes and vaping, you are welcome to contact the respective Assistant Deputy Principal. Students and families are reminded that the possession or use of vaping paraphernalia is a serious breach of the Student Code of Conduct.
