I live in Stradbroke and at present belong to the Laxfield First Responder group to gain more experience as a responder. The Stradbroke First Responder group is being set up as most members of the Laxfield group (which currently covers Stradbroke) are up to 6 minutes away or more and already have quite a large area to cover. On top of this Stradbroke has around 600 houses and can be 20 mins or more away from the nearest Ambulance which is why a First Responder group in the village will be such an asset. Our first group of Stradbroke volunteers have now qualified as First Responders but I am keen to see more volunteers join the Stradbroke group. Although some of the group have had prior first aid training, no previous medical experience is required. All the training and support needed is provided. The equipment that all First Responder groups need costs £2,500 and we are grateful that the funds have already been raised to provide that equipment for Stradbroke, through the Stradbroke Charitable Trust, Stradbroke Parish Council and Guy McGregor, our County Councillor. Community Responders are volunteers called to 999 emergencies when they can reach the scene quicker than ambulance crews. Responders will go out to life-threatening emergencies near their homes including heart attacks, chest pains, cardiac arrests, fits and breathing problems, but not to dangerous situations like road accidents/fights or childbirth. They are trained in a number of first aid procedures but have particular success with heart attack and cardiac arrest pa- tients. For example, when people have a heart attack in the home environment, or at work, the national survival rate is around 5%. Data shows that due to Community Responder schemes, here in Suffolk the figure is around 16%. Responders give as much or as little time as they want. The biggest commitment we ask is to go on a training weekend. The biggest fears of volunteers are that they will make patients worse, and they don't know what they are going out to, but it's not difficult and new recruits get ‘buddied up’ with someone with experience.

What is a Community First Responder? For most of the time Community Responders are rather ordinary people - living normal lives with normal jobs and normal routines. But every now and again, when a certain call comes, they become lifesavers.

FACT: The number of 999 calls to the ambulance service in Suffolk has more than doubled over the past decade. FACT: Every minute lost in getting to cardiac arrest patients gives them a 10per cent less chance of survival. FACT: You can make a difference.

Community Responders are volunteers called to 999 emergencies when they can reach the scene quicker than ambulance crews. They usually arrive five to six minutes earlier, and give first aid until the crew arrives - often saving lives. Responders will go out to life-threatening emergencies near their homes including heart attacks, chest pains, cardiac arrests, fits and breathing problems, but not to dangerous situations like road accidents/fights or childbirth. They are trained in a number of first aid procedures but have particular success with heart attack and cardiac arrest pa-tients. Stradbroke’s New Website is arriving soon!

The old monthly duplicator that has churned out the Stradbroke Monthly for many many years has now reached the end of the road. The edition you are now reading is likely to be the last one produced on that machine. In mid April a new printer is due to arrive and all being well the May magazine will be coming to you on better quality paper and with sharper images and text! Over the past two years the Magazine Team of more than 30 people – all volunteers – have been involved one way or another every month in bringing the magazine to you. They have helped the magazine evolve - retaining it’s familiar format whilst attempting to position it as a Stradbroke community magazine with ad-verts, rather than the other way round. Our advertisers are an essential part of the Monthly magazine and we always strive to get the right balance between “articles v. adverts” and “Stradbroke based advertisers v. non Stradbroke based advertisers”. From time to time we receive advice from contributors and readers variously asking for more advertising or no advertising! The magazine has come to a point now where it is not longer possible to keep adding pages to accommodate more content – be it adverts or articles! We cannot find a stapler or collator that can get staples through any greater thickness of paper! We also considered that the delivery team may rightfully not be able to add more paper and flyers to their already heavy deliveries! We hope that where we have to make decisions about balancing everyones interests, that you all continue to understand and support your magazine team. Our overriding aim is to encourage individuals and groups to provide articles and photographs, so that the magazine provides local information that YOU– the readers – want to see about YOUR community. So please do tell us about your activities or interests (keep it clean/legal!) so they can be shared and supported by others. The Stradbroke Monthly Team

Easter Thoughts It’s 1920. You’re 13 years old. While sitting in an arithmetic lesson you’ve been very disobedient (this is easier for some to imagine than others) and have been sent to the headmaster’s office to be punished. You stand before him and he stud-ies you sternly, bending his cane. It’s time for your punishment…. Suddenly, your young classroom teacher – the one you disobeyed – enters the room, and aston-ishingly offers to take the punishment for your wrongdoing. Remarkably the head-master agrees. You’re off the hook! Yet somehow, watching this generous man receive the lashing you deserve, your feeling of euphoria is tempered. This story puts us in mind of Jesus’ sacrifice, and yet it can never fully convey the wonderful and shocking lengths to which Jesus went for us. What’s more, Jesus’ sacrifice was a once-for all sacrifice for every sin we’ve ever committed: past, pre-sent and future. We are completely forgiven and freed from the grip of sin be-cause those who have life in Christ have died to sin. Doesn’t that change the way we approach life? It follows then that, if we keep living disobediently, its a sign that either we don’t understand the enormity of the substitution, or we don’t care very much about the substitute. Surely it can’t be fitting for a forgiven people to live carelessly? This is challenging stuff. More importantly, let’s keep in focus what Jesus did for us – he took our punishment and showed us a better way to live. This must be the best motivation there is for us to live godly lives.

Church Website: www.allsaintsstradbroke.suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, Do make sure that you watch TV on Thursday, April 9th, when The Queen comes at 11.00 am to distribute the Royal Maundy Money at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. Holy Week gives us time to think as we prepare for the bright happiness of Easter that reminds us that nothing is stronger than the love of God shown in the Crucifix-ion and Resurrection of His Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Please attend not only our Services but also our An-nual Church Meeting in the Community Centre at 7.30 pm on Monday 20th April, to take note of our re-sponsibilities for the upkeep and maintenance of the building, and improvements, and for the cost of the full-time ministry that I exercise, in which many of you share with your help, support and interest. Easter lilies are included in the church flower arrangements, and if you would like to make a donation towards the cost of our buying them, in memory of a loved one, please give it to Margaret Streeter or Mary Ellis. Do let me know if anyone would like to receive Holy Communion at home, or needs a visit at home or in hospital. Please look again at page 18 of the March Monthly. The Stradbroke Exhibition Fund could do much for you, or a member of your family. There is no age limit. The Fund has paid for our new books, Hymns Old & New, which include prayers and Bible readings for each Sunday. Please put Saturday, 27th June, 2.00 – 6.00 pm, in your diary. Bishop Nigel and others are staging a multi-media event at Athelington Hall called “Being the Church”. We must not miss it when it is taking place in one of our own four parishes. Please ask me for more information, and for a free ticket. All are welcome to go. The Women’s World Day of Prayer Service was greatly appreciated at the Baptist Church on Friday, March 6th, and the collection came to £110.

With all good wishes, David Streeter.

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee

The Cake Stall held on the 7th March raised a fantastic £148.25. Mr B. Moore has kindly agreed to assist in our Quiz Evening on the 20th March and will be doing the questions. Unfortunately the Primary School has one on the same night and it’s a shame that we didn’t know so as to avoid a clash. The pictures are coming in for the Art Exhibition with over 100 already received. Last month I mentioned that I was looking for Gardens to be opened on the 28th June for the annual “Stradbroke Open Gardens” day. Come on, don’t be shy, let visitors see the beauty of your garden and help to make it a special day. Once again thanks for you continued support; we ladies do appreciate it. Mary Ellis

Stradbroke Parish Council

Parish Council Meeting 09 March 2009 Planning The following decisions granting Planning Approval have been received from Mid Suffolk District Council: 4191/08 retention of front porch The Chestnuts, Pixey Green The Parish Council considered and recommended approval for the following: 0515/09 erection of conservatory 7 Eastlands News Items The Clerk has been asked by Mid Suffolk District Council to explain that kerb sweeping has been a little haphazard recently. This aspect of street cleaning is normally undertaken on an eight week rolling programme but, owing to the recent inclement weather, things have been somewhat delayed. It is hoped that normal service will be resumed shortly. Also on a similar theme...it is pointed out that the dog bins around the village are provided for dog waste produced when the dog is away from home. Please do not put in waste that has been collected from the garden. Boxes have been left near the bottle bank: it is great that people are recycling but please take your boxes home and dispose of them in the fortnightly green bin collection. If they are left at the recycling point they will not be collected and become a litter problem Timetables for the bus service are available from the Library. This service is secure until the autumn but to survive it must be used. Think about leaving the car behind and use your local bus. Vacancy Your Parish Council still needs you. The Parish Council will co-opt a councillor at its next meeting so there is still time to submit your name. For further information have a chat with the Clerk or any Councillor and put your name forward to the Clerk by 5th April 2009. It is not essential but a few lines about yourself would be helpful. Do get in touch, it would be great to hear from you.

Playing Field Drainage This exciting project is starting to move. A contractor has been selected and the fun will now begin - the fundraising. When the project is complete the playing field surface should be much improved; far better for the clubs to play upon and supporters shouldn’t get wet feet either! Nick Thompson BEM, who lives in the village, was the Guest Speaker at the March Monthly meeting held at The King’s Head Laxfield. It was attended by 13 members. His subject was the 1607 expedition to Jamestown Virginia, USA, when around 160 people sailed from England in 3 sailing ships. It was a most interesting talk and I gave the usual Vote of Thanks on behalf of those present. A thinking of you card signed by the members has been sent to Barbara Sturgeon who lives at Tibenham. Member Alan King from Thornham Parva is to receive Maundy Money presented by The Queen at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral on Maundy Thursday. The Branch has sent a Get Well Card to his wife Nora who is in hospital. The Secretary Jeremy Higgins presented the monthly financial report. The Guest Speaker at the next monthly meeting at 11.30am on Thursday April 2nd will be Roger Plant on ‘The Prison Service’, and it will be held at The King’s Head Laxfield our usual venue. Members please attend if you are able. Finally a full report on The Annual Branch Dinner and the appointment of a new Branch Treasurer will appear in next month’s issue. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Stradbroke Good Neighbours

Our President, Sue Gray, welcomed two new members to our Institute at our March meeting; Gill Bird and Brenda Sullivan have joined us and Leslie Day came along as a visitor, which was great. You never know Leslie might decide to join us as well, I do hope so! Caroline Meigh, from Badingham W.I. came and spoke to us on “How to han-dle women”: I think that we were all quite enlightened and realize how we, as women, have come on leaps and bounds over the past few years – naturally! Dorothy Readman gave the vote of thanks, well done Dorothy. Don’t forget the Easter Fayre on Saturday April 4th 10 am – 2 pm in the Community Centre. Our next meeting is on Thursday 9th April in the Community Centre at 7.30 pm and I hope to see you there. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary.

On Monday 23 February NHS Suffolk, the county’s primary care trust, launched a consul-tation to invite everyone in Suffolk to have their say about GP and dentist services avail-able outside normal surgery times – or ‘out of hours’. The out of hours consultation – will run for 12 weeks until 22 May 2009 – and will give people across Suffolk the chance to give their views of the current service and what improvements they think could be made. The contract for the current service has been extended for one year throughout 2009, so that a newly tendered service can begin in 2010. NHS Suffolk assures patients that during this changeover period, if they require attention from a doctor or dentist outside normal surgery times, they will continue to receive a high quality and consistent service. The consultation and questionnaire is now online at www.suffolk.nhs.uk and in print from the NHS Suffolk communications team, telephone 01473 770014 or by e-mail to [email protected].

Our Easter Bingo Night will be held on Friday 3rd April at 7:30pm at the Community Centre, as always a vast selection of prizes will be available to lucky winners, please come along and support us. We are planning a sponsored ‘Toddle’ followed by a Family Picnic with Punch & Judy and a barbeque on Saturday 10th May. We hope to raise money for a charity other than our own, for Leukaemia Research in memory of a dear friend and Pre-School mum who passed away earlier this year. We are aiming to get as many Toddler and Pre-School aged children as we can to walk (or be pushed in a pushchair) through the village, starting at 11.00am from the Pre-School heading up the hill to Neaves Lane. We will then hold the picnic and Punch & Judy on the meadow at Street Farm, Laxfield Road. We would like the children to come in fancy dress and get as many sponsors as they can. Sponsor forms are available from Pre-school, Toddler Group or by calling Louise on 384460. Some important events coming up later in the year: Following the huge success of the 80’s Disco held last Oc-tober, we shall be holding a ‘Skool Disco’ on Saturday 12th September at the Community Centre – more details to follow. Also, our Quiz Night on Friday 25th September and Christmas Bingo on Friday 27th November. Stradbroke Bumps, Babies and Toddler Group meets every Wednesday 10:00 – 12:00 during term time at the Community Centre. We have a wide range of toys suitable from birth to Pre-School with a craft activity and healthy snack provided for each child. We also have termly visits from the Early Years Family Advisor for weigh-ins and general questions or concerns. We have welcomed a lot of new faces recently so this really is a great way to meet people in the village and prepare your child for Pre-School in a friendly safe environment. Please contact Zoe on 388398 for more details. Louise Wilkinson Committee Member.

We want to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to the supporters of the Pyramids Playbus. To those who kindly offer financial support, as well as the parents/carers and children who come to our bus, the staff for their unending enthusiasm, creativity and efforts and to the committee members, past and present for being involved. The Playbus is an Ofsted registered, bright orange, double decker bus offering educational and play facilities for pre-school children travelling to rural areas of Mid-Suffolk and is a meeting place for parents and carers. We stop at a location near you (please see timetable below), so come on board and join us; your first visit is free. We can accommodate children from birth to school age

and past users always talk about the bus with great fondness. We are a friendly bunch with lots of activities for the children (and let's be honest adults) to do including painting, games, an on board role-play room, we have outdoor ride-ons which are enclosed in safe fencing during good weather and even our very own soft play area on the top deck. There is a kitchen upstairs too for adults to make hot drinks and meet one another whilst our children play. Our staff are great and all have had CRB checks and current first aid certificates as well as being qualified in child care. As we are a registered charity we rely on donations and grants, as well as income earned from government childcare vouchers, yes we take these for your child's sessions, fundraising events, hiring out the bus for par-ties/events, on-board catalogues, craft sales and more. If you know of a public or private sector pot of money we can access please let us know!!!! Have you thought about joining a committee? No previous experience is necessary just a desire to “be in-volved”, whether or not you/your child are users, everyone has skills that we can use to keep the Playbus run-ning. We have monthly meetings and would love to see you there. Please contact Helen Aust – Co-ordinator on 07849 373759 / 01449 711548 or Lorraine Farley – Secretary on 01379 672916 for details on the Playbus, funding or committee.

We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679

Daniel Craig stars in the latest film at Stradbroke Cinema

The next Annual Parish Meeting of Stradbroke will be held on 16th April 2009 in the Community Centre at 7.30pm The Agenda will be posted before the meeting on the Parish Notice Board. Purpose of the Annual Parish Meeting - All Parish and Town Councils throughout England are required by law to hold an annual parish meeting at this time each year. The purpose of calling this meeting is that it enables the electors to have their say on anything which they consider is important to the people of Stradbroke parish. Will I be able to ask questions and make suggestions? - Yes, any registered elector may ask questions at the meeting. These will usually be answered by the Chairman, by the Parish Clerk or a designated Councillor. An elector may also make suggestions and comment on anything pertinent to the people of Stradbroke. This will be welcomed and is the whole purpose of the meeting Will Parish Councillors be there? – The Chairman of the Parish Council chairs the meeting and usually all the other councillors attend and will report on various activities. Clubs, societies and organisations will also be invited to come along to provide information about their group. But the purpose of the meeting is to enable the electors to have their say. Councillors will listen with interest and as electors themselves, also have the opportunity to raise questions and make comments if they wish. Will notes be taken of the meeting? - Yes, a written record of the meeting will be taken and will be presented at a future meeting of the Council for its consideration. How long will the meeting last? - As long as need be within reason. It really depends on those present and the number of questions and the discussion that is raised. Generally, the meeting will last no longer than 2 hours. So please come along and be part of your community. Refreshments will be served after the formal part of the meeting. Ann Kerr, Chairman, Stradbroke Parish Council

Stradbroke Cinema Presents... Thursday, 23rd. April 7.00 for 7.30 pm we are showing “ Quantum Of Solace”. The Bar will be open for refreshments along with Choc-ices in the break. Tickets are £5.50 each “This film continues the high-octane adventures of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Casino Royale. Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission per-sonal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (Judi Dench) interrogate Mr White (Jesper Christensen) who reveals the organisation, which blackmailed Vesper, is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined. On a mission that leads him to Aus-tria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world’s most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (Joaquin Cosio). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his power-ful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. This Bond is more realistic and more emotionally complex than the previous ones.“ Alas the last Cinema date for the present season is now Wednesday, 13th. May. Film to be announced. Three Men in a Boat

Stradbroke Community Centre 30th April 7.30 pm One of the funniest and best-loved books in the English language is taking to the stage as the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds presents a new musical adaptation of Three Men in a Boat. Written by Jerome K Jerome in 1889 Three Men in a Boat has crystal-lised for generations the humour and charm of the English at play in Vic-torian Britain. Originally destined to be a travel guide to boating on the River Thames, Jerome let himself get taken away with the comic ex-tracts, mixing life as he witnessed it with witty fiction. The result is a story of quintessential Britishness told in the impeccably mischievous and wry humour that only the English do best. This new adaptation by the Theatre Royal Bury St. Edmunds brings out all the charm and energy of the much-loved original. Director, Abi Newberry, commented on the production: Tickets and further information are available from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 01285 769505 or online at www.theatreroyal.org .

This summer the beautiful Grade I listed building of St Peter’s Church in Sibton is all set to hold three very special musical evenings as part of ‘Summer at Sibton’. The ‘Arioso String Quartet’ will be playing on Saturday 9 May, and the evening will include Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Gade played on violins, viola & cello. On 20 June there is a folk band with a difference. Traditional and medieval tunes, with a few new ones thrown in, will be played by ‘The Hurd’, the instruments being a hurdy gurdy, guitar, bassoon, soprano sax and treble recorders. Lastly, during Sibton PCC’s Flower Festival weekend, ‘The Delightful Companions’ with be performing some 17th & 18th Baroque music by Handel, Purcell, Telemann & Corelli. Sports Roundup

From a winter that seems to have gone on forever, we are suddenly in the middle of a warm, arid spring. The grass is being cut, the pitch rolled, and the opening game is just around the corner, which is April 19th when we entertain Caribbeans, in our first Section A match for a decade. However close that day is, there is much to do off the pitch before then. On the weekend of April 5/6, we once again have teamed up with Nat West Bank for ‘Cricket Force’, where all manner of dedicated volunteers can be seen painting, erecting nets, building a shed partition, and generally preparing for the season. Another annual event follows with the Easter Music Marathon at the Queens Head, where for just 50p it is possible to listen to one of 4000 vinyl singles (details elsewhere). Proceeds will be split between the Club & the East Anglian Air Ambulance. As promised last month, we have more details about the Car Boot Sale. It is confirmed as Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, from 10am to 2pm at the Playing Field. Pitches available at £5 (in advance) £7 (on the day). Just call Carrie Barnes (388654). Admission is just 20p. As well as car boots, there will be various stalls, refreshments, burger van (& ice cream van!), a grand raffle, bouncy castle for the kids, and an assault course. Everyone likes a bargain. Support the event and it may become a regular attraction. Finally, if you or your offspring want to play cricket, indoor nets are held every Sunday 5.30pm to 7pm at Thomas Mills HS (Adults), Tuesdays 6pm to 7.30pm at SBEC (Juniors), and Mondays 6pm to 7pm at SBEC (Girls). We have 3 adult teams, an Academy XI, 3 youth teams, and a girls team. Surely there is something there for you? See you at Easter. Michael Hugman

Ist Team:- lost to Sporting ’87, 2 – 0 and lost to Elmswell, 2 – 1 Reserves:- lost to Bildeston, 3 – 1 and lost to Sporting ’87, 5 – 3 After an enforced 3 weeks break the teams seem to have lost their form, which hopefully will return in the very near future. The last “Cash Bingo” raised £98.11 and the next one is on Friday 10th April (Good Friday) at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre. The Annual “Jumble Sale” is on May 9th so if you have anything saleable please contact Mary Ellis on 01379 384642. Mary Ellis

We will be holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 16th May 10.00 – 11.30 am. There will be a Cake stall, bring and buy stall, and a raffle and Mary and Michael Ellis have kindly offered their home and garden for this event. Fund raising is very important for every club and asso-ciation, so we hope that we can count on your support and, likewise, we will try support your events when they occur. This season we will again have teams in the Saxmundham League, the Waveney Triples League and the Woodbridge League so good luck to all the members taking part. Bowls can be borrowed from members and there will be people around to assist you to learn how to bowl. At 5.00 pm we will be holding our first tournament of the season, The Presidents Cup, for members only. I will let you know who won this tournament in the next issue. Gardeners Notes We have enjoyed some good weather recently and everything is bursting into life, forsythia always gets a bad press but given space to grow it makes a bright splash of yellow in the garden especially if it can be seen from your house. I'm a bit late in getting the beds prepared for my vegetables but I have managed to get onion setts in already, you can plant garlic now but it does much better if planted in the autumn and, like onions, needs a good sunny position. April is a good time to sow tender vegetables like runner beans, tomatoes, courgettes, pump-kins and peppers in pots in the greenhouse or on a sunny shelf, don't be tempted to sow hun-dreds of seeds unless you intend to pass them on to friends, it's better to sow a couple per small pot and few of each variety as things like tomatoes germinate quite easily.

Rhubarb is now getting going and signals the beginning of the produce year for me, compost or well rotted manure around it's base will boost the crop and help keep moisture in. Now that the temperature has picked up it is time to sow lettuce, beetroot, sprouting broccoli, pars-nips, radishes and peas in the open to name but a few, I have found that it is better to sow leeks in pots or trays and transplant them in to rows when they are pencil size. If you have managed to prepare all

you veg beds keep on top of the weeds by hoeing if it is dry, this also goes for borders in the garden as little and often makes all the difference. Daffodils are in full swing now, it is worth dead heading if you can be bothered and leave the foliage on for at least 4 weeks after flowering, also a feed with Growmore or similar will improve display next year.

This year is the 200th anniversary of the cooking apple 'Bramley's Seedling' which in my opinion is not only a great apple but also a very handsome tree. I found it sad that the lady who planted the first tree (which still exists) had the tree named after a butcher called Mr Bramley who was the owner of the garden. Someone in the village who is going has contacted me to try and record as many apple and pear trees locally as possible, particularly any that are old or unusual. I have said I would help and if anyone knows of trees that should be included please contact me.

I had a good response from people about snowdrops for the Churchyard and now is the time to transplant them in your garden. If anyone has any native Eng-lish bluebells I would also like to introduce some to areas in the Churchyard, please let me know.

Things to be getting on with this month: cut back dogwood for stem colour next winter, pot up and start watering dahlias and cannas in the greenhouse, when the dahlias start to shoot you can take cuttings from them. It may be too late but cut back epimedium leaves to reveal the small yellow flowers underneath, this is a great plant for woodland areas with good autumn colour and evergreen

leaves particularly epimedium x perralchicum. Now is the time to feed with Growmore or bonemeal around shrubs and roses (don't use bonemeal if you have a dog). Any questions please contact me at The Wheelwrights, enjoy what is arguably the best time of year in the garden.

Luke.

The original tree (above) There are now 500 Bram-ley apple growers in the country and the total UK market is worth around £50 million.!
