Welcome to the 4th edition of Cars, Keys and Locks, featuring the second part of our Renault vehicles guide as well as contributions from Keyline, SuperVAG and our sponsors Tradelocks.

In our last edition we covered Renault locks comprehensively, and this month we will be completing the guide with a picture how to on both Phase 2 and Phase 3 locks. Martin Pink takes us through the VAC102 ignition lock as well as programming using Truecode. His ‘Programming Renault Vehicles Hints and Tips’ on page 13 is some of his most insightful advice yet and will help the majority of auto locksmiths with everyday programming call outs.

SuperVAG have made a very special contribution this month with their technical guide on the SuperVAG key on pages 26 – 32. Covering both their new smart direct key programming and their solution to all key lost situations, you’ll know everything you need to if you have recently bought or are thinking of investing in the software.

‘The strength of a Lion, the Beauty of a Tiger…’ is the latest article from Keyline which talks about the incredible Ninja Laser and the supreme Keyline Liger software.

As Tradelocks Open Day was postponed to Saturday 20th of August, you could still be in with a chance of meeting CKL writer and auto locksmith expert Martin Pink himself. If you are a fan of Martins how to guides or want to have your auto questions answered in person, then register for the event, full details on pages 36-37. And don’t forget a full archive of our articles and guides can be found at www.locksmithmag.com.

Tackling Renault Locks › Part 1I

Picking Process:This is a 1 sided lock, so it is essential that the pick is inserted the correct way up. To ensure it is properly inserted, see if you can feel the wafer in each position – if you can’t, then the tool is in upside down.

Once properly inserted in the lock a wafer can be felt, with the tool, in all 6 positions.

As with most Lishi tools the rest is simple; just apply a medium tension in the clockwise direction and find the solid binding wafers. Once found we pick them until they are moving again – if a wafer moves then leave it alone.

So once the tool is properly inserted we must apply medium tension and feel for the binding positions.

Position 6 is the 1st to bind and pick. Position 5 is the next to bind and pick. Then position 4.

Then position 1. Once position 1 is picked the lock opens.Position 3 is the next to bind and pick.

By Martin Pink

The VAC102 Ignition LockPicking and Decoding the VAC102 Ignition Lock on a Renault Kangoo using the Genuine Lishi VAC102 Ignition 2in1 Pick and Decoder.

The Renault Kangoo VAC102 ignition lockis a very quick and simple lock to pick and decode. With the NEW Genuine Lishi VAC102 ignition 2in1 pick and decoder you’ll be able to accurately pick and decode the ignition lock in under 2 minutes, with minimal practice.

The lock has 6 cut positions and 5 cut heights.

5

Decoding Process:The decode is very simple; decoding in the same direction as we picked, push gently past the spring to the full stop position and take the reading. So holding the lock in the picked open position we decode:

Position 1 reads as a number 4 key cut.

Position 3 reads as a number 4 key cut.

Position 2 reads as a number 5 key cut (which we knew as we didn’t need to pick it).

Position 4 reads as a number 4 key cut.

Position 5 reads as a number 5 key cut. Position 6 reads as a number 3 key cut.

This concludes the decode and gives us a key of: 454453. The picture of the key is below:

Renault Phase 2 Locks

Lock Profile This key was used on the older phase 2 models and must not be confused with the phase 3 lock for later models. The phase 3 uses a similar blade but with different key heights and will be covered later in this guide.

The phase 2 lock uses 5 key heights and is key series 12345. Something to bare in mind is that key cut height 1 is the lowest cut and key cut height 5 is the highest. It is located on the passenger door underneath either a colour coded or grey cap on the external door handle. On UK models it picks anti-clockwise to openand clockwise to lock and will only open the passenger door and not the entire car. Convertible models normally have a separate boot lock on the same key but non-convertible models do not.

Picking using the Genuine Lishi Renault V2, 2in1 Pick and Decoder

The Renault phase 2 lock is used on the following models:

Renault Megane 2003 to 2009Renault Scenic 2003 to 2009Renault Clio 2006 to 2010 (card models)Renault Espace 2002 to 2014Renault Laguna 2001 to 2007Renault Vel Satis 2002 to 2005

The lock has all wafers on the same side/track and the V2 is a straight forward pick to use. Fully insert the pick into the lock so a wafer is felt in each position; apply a medium tension in the anti-clockwise direction to open, or in the clockwise direction to lock. Feel for solid binding wafers and pick this until it’s moving again –if a wafer has any movement then leave it alone.

So we begin by inserting the tool in the lock and applying a medium tension; proceed to feel for the solid binding wafers and pick them:

7

Position 2 is the next to bind and pick.

As position 1 picks, the lock opens.

Position 1 is the next to bind and pick.

Position 6 is the 1st to bind and pick.

Position 4 is the next to bind and pick.

Position 5 is the next to bind and pick.

Position 3 is the next to bind and pick.

8

Position 2 decodes as a number 3 cut.

Position 5 decodes as a number 5 key cut.

Position 3 decodes as a number 2 cut.

Position 6 decodes as a number 4 key cut.

Position 1 decodes as a number 3 key cut.

Position 4 decodes as a number 4 cut.

Decoding using the Genuine Lishi Renault V2, 2in1 Pick and Decoder

The decode procedure is alsostraight forward; we must decode in the same direction as we picked, pushing gently past the spring to the full stop position and then take the reading.

So holding the lock in the picked, open position. We decode in the same direction as we picked:

This decode gives us a key from bow to tip of: 332454 - as shown in the key picture:

9

Position 3 decodes as a number 2 cut.

Position 6 decodes as a number 4 key cut.

Renault Phase 3 LocksThe Renault phase 3 lock is used on the following vehicles:

Renault Capture 2013 onwardsRenault Clio 2013 onwardsRenault Koleos 2008 to 2011Renault Laguna 3 2008 onwardsRenault Megane 3 2009 onwardsRenault Scenic 3 2009 onwards

Lock Profile Phase 3 Renault locks are used on the newer 4 button key cards and use a different series to the phase 2 locks. The spacing remains the same but the cut heights have altered.

The phase 2 locks use the 5 height, 12345 series, whereas the new phase 3 locks use just 4 heights and the 1234Q5678H series. So despite having the same construction and spacing, and despite the fact that the phase 2 tool will still pick the phase 3 locks, it cannot accurately decode the phase 3 locks and vice versa - so a new tool was required.

The other fundamental difference between the 2 locks is that the older phase 2 locks have all 6 wafers on the same side/track and the new phase 3 locks have 4 wafers on 1 side and 2 on the opposite side of grid. In the phase 3 locks, positions 1245 are on 1 side, and positions 3 and 6 are on the opposite side – like the VA2 and VA6 locks.

Also the decode itself is very different. (So make sure you take note in the decode section of this guide for a slightly different decode procedure to the phase 2 tool.)

This lock, as stated, only uses 4 heights; cut height 4 is the highest cut and cut height 1 is the lowest.

Picking using the Genuine Lishi Laguna 3 Tool

10

Position 4 is the first to bind and pick.

Position 3 is the next to bind and pick.

Position 2 is the next to bind and pick.

Once position 3 is picked the lock opens.

We must start by fully inserting the tool into the lock; it will only go in 1 way with the grid facing upwards. Once fully inserted, as with every other Lishi tool, a medium tension is applied to search for the solid binding wafers and we pick them until they are springing tightly again

Because the series numbers and the cuts are on 2 different tracks, i.e.1234 and 5678, it is more accurate to read just one track on the key. This involves reading 4 positions in the opposite direction you pick them in, and 2 positions in the same direction as picked – this gives you an accurate decode on just one track, which is all you need to cut the correct key.

– if a wafer moves at all then leave it alone.Once inserted, apply a medium tension in the anti-clockwise direction to open, or inthe clockwise direction to lock and search for the solid binding wafers.

Decoding using the Genuine Lishi Laguna 3 ToolWhen decoding:

Decode positions 1, 2, 4 and 5 in the opposite direction you picked in.

Decode positions 3 and 6 in the same direction you picked in.

11

Position 1 decodes as a number 4 key cut.

Position 3 decodes as a number 4 key cut.

Position 5 decodes as a number 4 key cut.

Position 2 decodes as a number 3 key cut.

Position 4 decodes as a number 3 key cut.

Position 6 decodes as a number 1 key cut.

This gives us a key, on the 1 track from bow to tip of: 434341.

This will provide an accurate decode and allow you to cut the correct key:

12

We can now see how this decode method works and how it is an accurate way to decode the lock. Look at the image of the key and the machine decode on the Ninja Laser below:

As you can see we have perfectly decoded just 1 track of the key, and it is identical to the machines decode. Both keys are a perfect match – so simply cut the decoded key.

Renault Key and Card Programming with Truecode

By Martin Pink

Truecode, in my opinion, is simply the best and easiest programmer to use on Renault vehicles; it can’t be beaten for speed, reliability and ease of use.

Programming Renault Vehicles, Hints and Tips:

Old Renault Clio vehicles up to late 2001 cannot be programmed by OBD without a dealer pre-coded key being ordered. These can be programmed by EEPROM but not by OBD. When quoting for a job on 2001/2002 models you must ask the question ‘where is the radio aerial on your cars roof? Is it on the front or on the back of the vehicle?’ This simple question can save you a wasted journey and the purchase of incorrect parts. If the customers answer is that it’s on the front of the cars roof, then this is the older ID33 system that requires a pre-coded dealer key or EEPROMED; if the answer is that the aerial is on the back of the cars roof, then this is the newer ID46 system and will code in quickly and simply for you.

• When programming key cards to card system models, switch on the hazard lights prior to connecting to the car to ensure the dash is awake.

• When programming more than 1 hands free card, ensure that only the card being programmed is inside the car and that the

other card is always a few feet away so it can’t be detected and the system is not confused.

• When you are reading the pin code from a Clio PH2 model with just 1 button, be aware that if an incorrect pin code is displayed then the car may have had a new ECU fitted. These are usually campus ECU’s that are fitted, so try reading and coding as a campus for the correct pin code.

• Second hand keys cannot be recoded to a car, so don’t waste a visit trying to code an eBay bought key unless it’s a virgin.

• Always ensure good battery voltage - use a battery support unit if need be.

• Always carry a spare car reader or 2 - as these commonly fail.

It’s not uncommon to receive calls where a mechanic or recovery operator has advised a customer to call an auto locksmith, as they have diagnosed a problem as a key that needs re-programming. But often this is a misdiagnosis

14

and can be a huge waste of time for both yourself and the customer.

Many mechanics make this diagnosis everyday – and although it’s not something we can stop entirely, we can limit these wasted call outs by asking simple questions to the customer!

It’s likely that the engine won’t start with their key, which is why the problem has been diagnosed as a programming issue. You don’t get paid for unnecessary call outs, so to save everyone’s time and stop yourself from potentially missing out on other jobs, simply ask the customer to go to their vehicle and check the immo light on the dashboard.

The immo light can tell us a lot and can help save our time. Explain to them what it is; that before they open their door they will see a red light on the dashboard that flashes every so many seconds – it is this light you want them to look at.

Ask them to: Insert the key into the ignition and switch the ignition to position 2. Observe what the light does, it will be 1 of 3 things:

1. The red light will flash on and off constantly 2. It will come on and stay on constantly 3. It will come on, stay on for a few seconds and then go off

If they answer number 1, then it could be an aerial ring fault and not a key reading fault. However if the immo light is flashing on and off quickly and constantly, with the ignition switched to position 2, this can indicate there is a chance that the key is at fault.

If they answer number 2, then the vehicle has detected an engine malfunction fault and the vehicle needs a garage with dealer diagnostics to find out what it is – but it is not key related. This can also happen if the car has had a bump; the fuel cut off switch may need resetting.

If they answer number 3, then the key has been recognised and is not at fault. This can happen when the crank shaft sensor or cam shaft sensor fails or when the fuel pump fails etc. Therefore, neither options 2 or 3 can be key related – so there is no need for an auto locksmith call out.

Option one, it may be a possibility and a key related issue cannot be ruled out.

The same can be said for card systems like Megane. Ask the customer what message they get on the screen; if it says the card is not detected then it will be a faulty card or card reader. If they also get a steering locked/ unlocked message it can relate to a steering lock fault. If they also get an ECU fault message then reprogramming won’t help as it is prone to water entry.

Programming keys to a Renault Modus using Truecode, via OBD

Let’s look next at the process of coding keys and cards to Renault vehicles:

The modus uses both 2 and 3 button keys and with Truecode we can configure the car to work with whichever key type our customer or ourselves wish i.e. whether they want a separate boot button or not.

We must first locate the OBD plug on the car; on the Modus it is beneath the centre console as pictured. Once we’ve located the OBD plug, we must connect our Truecode device and laptop.

16

Once the laptop, Truecode and dongle are connected (USB dongle must be connected too); we then open the Truecode program and select Renault key programming.

The Renault program opens up on the laptop. From the drop down menu we select Modus ‘2004 to 2012 normal key.’

The software screen prompts you to ensure the ignition is off and the key is removed. We can see from the screen that the car has 1 key coded to it; the pin code is read and displayed on the screen.

17

In this case click ‘ok,’ then click ‘connect to selected vehicle box.’ Truecode will open comms to the car. The vehicle is configured for a 3 button remote; we change this and configure it to a 2 button if we choose. Connect to the ECU and read the pin code and key details stored in the car remote; we can do this from the special functions tab.

Click the start program tab and a pop up screen will appear confirming that the pin code has been accepted and to switch the ignition on to position 2. The key has already been programmed so the screen asks if the red light is on or off. Click ok.

The screen will change and confirm that the first key is correctly programmed; it also confirms that only 1 key is programmed to start the car and displays that keys unique ID in slot 1. It then confirms slots 2 to 4 are empty. You will then be asked if you wish to program more keys – if you select no the session will close – in this example we will select yes as want to code in a second key.

18

You are then instructed to remove the first key, insert the next key and switch the ignition on. Do this and click ok. You are again asked if the security light is on, flashing, or off. Select and follow the menu.

The screen will confirm operation is successful - click ok. The screen will change and confirm both keys ID and you will be asked if you want to code in another key. In this case we select no and the program closes - if adding a third key select yes and follow the screen prompts.

We now check that the red light goes out and the engine starts on both keys; we check remote functions work and then the job is complete and the car now has 2 keys only and any additional keys not present are deleted from the system.

This entire process takes no more than a few minutes from start to finish – it is as simple as following a menu.

19

In this example we are going to program 2 cards to a Renault Megane 2004, PH2, none hands free model.

First locate the OBD plug; this is found behind a pop off cover at the base of the centre console. Simply pop off this cover and you will see the OBD plug to connect to.

Connect the Truecode and the Truecode dongle to the laptop and securely connect the cable to the cars OBD socket. Open the Truecode Renault program on the laptop.

Programming Key Cards to a Renault Megane PH2 Model using Truecode, via OBD

20

Select Megane 2002 to 2006 from the drop down menu. You will be prompted to ensure that no cards are in the card reader – click ok.

Truecode will connect to the car, read and confirm the pin code and key details on screen. Click start program – the screen will now confirm that the pin code is accepted and tells you to insert a card into the reader. Insert the card and click ok.

Within a few seconds the card is programmed. You will be asked if you want to program a second card – in this case we say yes and the screen will tell you to put the next card into the reader – press ok.

21

The screen has just one card coded as it codes the second.

So insert the next card as instructed and then press ok. The screen will change and confirm the procedure is correct - click ok.

The cards are now programmed and the job is complete.

Nothing beats Truecode for ease of use - the menu and the screen prompts take you through it step by step and even a novice can code Renault keys with ease and in just minutes.

22

This happens with most equipment on Insignia and Astra J models at times. It’s easily resolved; if you experience this again simply remove the key from the ignition and unplug your programmer - open the bonnet and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 seconds –then reconnect it - now put the key in the ignition and switch on and the light will go out as it should.

I have picked open a customer’s Hyundai with the KIA7 profile, using the TOY48 2in1, as it has the same profile. But now I can’t back pick the lock to reset it - the customer’s key won’t enter the lock until it is reset. What can I do to reset it as the customer wants this resolved?

I programmed a Vauxhall Insignia with Truecode, but the immobiliser light stayed on. The key worked fine but the immobiliser light won’t go out, am I doing something wrong? Is there a way I can rectify this?

Are you a locksmith unable to get a job done? Got a burning question, but not sure who to ask for advice on the latest products and tools? World leading auto locksmith professional Martin Pink is here to help! Each issue he will be answering some of your auto locksmithing questions, so if you’re in need of expert advice, get in touch!

This is a mistake made by many in the past; yes, it’s the same profile but a totally different lock, which is why it has its own tool - the HY22/KIA7 pick and decoder.

The difference is easily seen; the TOY48 lock has just 5 positions to pick and 3 key heights. The KIA 7 lock has 6 positions and 4 key heights. What has happened is the 6th position in the lock needs picking to reset; you can’t pick this with your TOY48 tool, as its not there to pick. The solution is simple; use a KIA7/HY22 tool to reset the lock or remove the lock and strip it down to reset, using the correct tool will be far easier.

23

I’ve tried to pick a Citroen DS3 lock which was fitted with the VA2 lock. But, my pick will only pick up 5 of the 6 wafers and I can’t get it open – is my pick faulty?

No not at the moment - though I have successfully picked a few of these open using the VA6 tool. The 6 positions all line up perfectly, but in this vehicle there are actually 7 cuts. The VA6 only picks up 6 of the 7 cuts in positions 2 to 7, in this DAF lock.

I got success picking by setting the 6 positions I could feel; I then maintained the opening tension, gently extracting the pick a few millimetres until you feel the 7th cut in position 1. Pick and set this cut. If it doesn’t open, whilst maintaining the opening tension, gently push the pick back in fully then check the other positions as one or more will need picking – once picked it will open.

No the pick is not faulty – you just have an older version of it. The newer V2 3in1 tool is required as the one you have isn’t getting full entry into the lock.

They introduced this lock to DS3 and to the later Berlingo models amongst others, and the early tools were then modified to deal with the new locks released.

Both the VA6 4 lifter and the VA2 tool were modified once these new locks were released, so to successfully pick and decode you need the latest versions of the VA2 and VA6 tools to defeat them.

Is there a Lishi pick for a DAF C330 2016 plate?

The Strength of a Lion, the Beauty of a Tiger…Liger Software and the Ninja Laser

When it comes to key cutting and cloning within the automotive sector; calculation, speed as well as key cutting precision is all very important. The mechanics have particular importance, but it doesn’t hurt to have attractively designed software with graphics that appease the eye.

The need for a high-precision, electronic machine for the automotive sector has grown over the years, as more and more specialists have started to consider key duplicating in order to offer customers a more complete service.

By Massimo Bianchi, Keyline Strategic Planner

25

With this, the idea of having a compact electronic key cutting machine for car keys was born. It needed to be easily transportable, and combine both the mechanics and the software needed to give results that weren’t commonly seen on the market. What we wanted to create was a machine that could cut a key, simply, by code and within a few seconds.

The Ninja concept represents the base of the Ninja series – a family of key cutting

machines made for success. This is where the project started, the result - the electronic key cutting machine known as Ninja Laser. To get the most efficiency, flexibility of use and precision we put a variable speed, circular blade and an end mill for the laser (track) keys. As a result, the Ninja Laser has become a powerful station to cut standard keys, laser keys, Tibbe keys by code and decode. We also introduced a clamp (model AC) that can hold a wide range of laser keys currently on the market – all with just the one accessory. It meant there was no need to remove the clamp – making it even simpler to use. We then added a pioneering electronic component, which was made possible as a result of the extensive research we carry out. Our designers and developers created software that is dedicated to the key cutting process and that gets the best performance from our machines. We call it Liger, in honor of the biggest existing feline.

Liger Keyline combines the strength of the lion and the beauty of the tiger, because it can manage complex procedures through a graphic interface, which makes everything easier and more likeable from an aesthetical point of view. But today speed is also needed; Liger software is fast without compromising its elegance.

The lion and the tiger were born for this.

Stronger, sleeker tools with an easy to read grid and an anonymous product code, for your piece of mind. Tradelocks introduce the next generation of Genuine Lishi Tools – T-code.

The new tools are a completely different concept to their Night Vision predecessor. They are made with a high quality, titanium based coating, and with an anti-glare, matt black finish for the best performance possible. T-code tools have been made with strength and quality in mind to tackle the trickiest of locks, making them the perfect tool for the most professional locksmith.

Every aspect of their design has been researched and well thought out, from the materials used to the colour of their finish and even their coding. It took 4 years of dedicated tool development, trials and persistent testing to get them fit for purpose - but finally T-code is born.

Stronger and Smoother Picking

Using the most advanced coating technology the tools have been designed

The Next Generation from Genuine Lishi:

T-code

for the committed professional. The coating is a mixture of the highest quality titanium and other precious metals, creating a durable and strong outer layer. Titanium as a material is known for its strength, which is why T-code picks and decoders are tougher than any other tools on the market. They are the perfect choice for older, trickier locks. Further to this, the outer layer has been designed to slide smoothly into a lock to create minimal friction when working - for even easier use.

Anti-Glare and Easy to Read

The pure, black, matt finish was chosen for its practicality and anti-glare properties. Originally, plans adopted a gold titanium finish to the tools, but the idea was rejected as the gold showed up scratches and was too reflective – making it difficult to work with. A jet black tool, with a matt surface was the most practical idea and durable; and by adding a clear white grid, the information can be easily read.

Anonymous Coding

But why T-code? The name comes not only from the Titanium coating it utilises butbecause of its clever and unique coding system. Tradelocks listen to their customers, in all of the 25 countries they export to, and many expressed concerns over their own customers knowing what tools they were using, as picks are labelled and easily seen when a locksmith is working.

As a response to this, the T-code system, where the tool gets its name, was introduced. Each tool is given a ‘T-code’ for example ‘T1’ or ‘T2’ and this, instead of the actual pick name, is engraved onto the tool. With only the grid and the T-code visible, it would be very difficult for anyone else to know what tool you are using.

The Best Performance

In this industry your tools are as important as your skills, and auto locksmiths and security specialists need the best. T-code tools by Genuine Lishi are the most up to date picks and decoders on the market; they are sturdy, durable and deliver the absolute best performance.
