More than 100 SEI member committees create resources to serve members and the profession. More than 50 SEI Chap-ters and Grad Student Chapters serve SEI members locally. If you are not yet involved, I encourage you to join an SEI effort to make the most of your member-ship, and advance your career and the profession.

On behalf of the SEI Board and Staff, thank you to our many partners in advancing and serving the profession. Together we will realize our Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering.

Cheng Lok Caleb Hing, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE SEI President 2017-2018

Laura E. Champion, P.E., M.ASCE SEI Director

Resilience

2017 was a year of many challenges around the world and within our profes-sion. As SEI members strive to advance and serve the profession, we build a more resilient future.

Physical infrastructure demands more resiliency. SEI members work to pro-mote resiliency with improvements to structural design through the publication of updated and new standards, as well as through post-disaster assessment efforts such as the SEI trip to St. Thomas following the devastating September hurricanes.

The profession also demands more resiliency. SEI continues to invest in our Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering. To meet these demands SEI is developing the next generation of leaders as a high priority, and with generous support from the SEI Futures Fund in partnership with the ASCE Foundation – has increased funding of Student and Young Professional par-ticipation at Structures Congress and within committees.

Post-Disaster Assessment

In October SEI sent a team of volunteer members to St. Thomas, USVI to study the impact of Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria on the island’s struc-tures in September. The team assessed building damage and collapse of engineered structures caused by wind, and studied other issues important to the development of ASCE 7 Wind Load provisions. They also focused on pos-sible performance-based wind design applications and engineered building performance under extreme wind con-ditions. Special thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for their assistance.

Studying the effects of building damage

in a post-disaster setting is unlike any other engineer-ing experience. Witnessing how buildings fail, or how they succeed, provides great insight into design methodologies.

World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Chile on ASCE 7-16

Plans are in process for a joint specialty conference with IStructE.

 Promote performance-based codes and standards

SEI is documenting current design environment and challenges, and forming recommendations to pursue this shift – in collaboration with the ASCE Industry Leaders Council (ILC), other Institutes and organizations.

 Lead multi-disciplinary technical summits

First Interdisciplinary Technical Summit: Resilience of Structures and Infrastructure Systems at Structures Congress 2018

 Advocate for SE licensure

Efforts continue through the Struc-tural Engineering Licensure Coali-tion for a united voice to promote SE licensure, and include collabo-ration with NCEES and NSPE.

The SEI Vision for the Future ensures a vibrant future for structural engineer-ing where we lead and innovate to improve the safety and well-being of the global population. We create and use innovative technologies to design inspir-ing, resilient structures while ensuring the economic and sustainable use of natural resources. We are the best and brightest, and have rewarding oppor-tunities to advance and be recognized throughout our careers.

SEI is advancing our Vision initiatives:

 Reform structural engineering education

Recognizing that the profession is changing in response to glo-balization, automation, etc. this effort will report on successes and recommend pursuits to change the paradigm of Structural Engineering education.

 SEI Global Initiatives

In 2017 leaders connected with global partners and presented at:

SEI AT WORK FOR YOU

SEI advanced in serving the profession in 2017, including producing inno-vative conferences, publications, and other programs, through collaboration with our many technical, standard, and business/professional committees, and partners.

SEI experts presented on ASCE 7-16 at the ASCE Convention and NCSEA Summit, and participated in many joint events including:

 Aesthetics in Design Forum

 BIM Forum Conference

The Role of Advanced Technolo-gies in Structural Engineering for More Resilient Communities, with NASEM and Resilient America.

 Wood Education Workshop

SEI also renewed partnership with CASE and NCSEA with a new joint MOU.

Conferences

The annual SEI Structures Congress continues to lead and innovate with more interactive programming and the latest knowledge and practice including resilience, performance-based design, sustainability, and smart technology topics. Nearly 1,400 participants from more than 30 countries attended Structures Congress 2017 in Denver. Participants also enjoyed a sold-out reception celebrating the Future of Structural Engineering hosted by Ashraf Habibullah and CSI at the Denver Art Museum in support of the SEI Futures Fund.

At the SEI Local Leaders Conference in Chicago representatives from 50 local SEI Professional and Graduate Student Chapters learned about new SEI initia-tives and best practices to strengthen local efforts, and participated in ASCE Communications and Media Training.

Plans are in process for future joint conferences with the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) of ASCE, and with IStructE.

Developing technical resources is at the forefront of SEI activities. In 2017 SEI produced nearly half of the ASCE bestselling publications. SEI standards, journals, and other publications com-pleted in 2017 include:

 ASCE 7 Hazard Tool

 ASCE 7 Online

Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings, ASCE/SEI 41-17

 Structural Materials and Global Climate

 Structures Congress 2017

 Journal of Structural Engineering

 Journal of Bridge Engineering

Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction

The new cutting-edge ASCE 7 On-line provides robust digital access to the 2016 and 2010 versions of the standard, and the new ASCE 7 Hazard Tool delivers site-specific hazard data.

SEI develops 25 standards for build-ings and non-buildings, transmission, and nuclear structures. SEI members advance coordination of standards development through the Internation-al Code Council (ICC), International Standards Organization (ISO), and Structural Standards Coordination Council (SSCC).

There are more than 50 SEI Chapters of ASCE Section/Branches serving SEI members locally, including 12 SEI Graduate Student Chapters, and growing.

SEI Graduate Student Chapters (GSCs) enhance the education of students preparing to become structural engi-neers and engage student members in SEI for a successful transition from college to career. GSCs organize and manage visiting speakers, prospective student events, field trips, lead outreach activities, and more. Participating in a GSC helps members broaden their view of what it means to be a structural engineer. Undergraduate students are also invited to participate.

My wife and I give to invest in young

engineers’ futures. I had many mentors support me without a clear picture of what the future would bring. Now we are lucky to have a vision and be able to support it.

For 2018, the SEI Futures Fund Board has committed more than $100,000 in support for these stra-tegic initiatives to shape the future of our profession:

SEI Global initiatives through resource workshops, an inter-national practice guide, and increasing international sessions at Structures Congress

Stakeholder workshop to align SEI messaging long-term strategy

Pilot to livestream content at Struc-tures Congress

Increased Scholarships for Young Professionals to Structures Congress

NEW Scholarships for Students to Structures Congress
