MESSAGE FROM THE EAST

Franklin Nuernberger, Worshipful Master

This will be my lastofficial writing as your Worshipful Master. I hope othershave made some connection with a relative with Masonicbackground. The more you look the more you'll find.

Brethren, it has been an honor to serve you asWorshipful Master. I pray you will give as much supportto my successor and his officers as you have given me.

As I have said in the past, we would like to seemore of you sitting on our sidelines. In November, wehave elections, and a Thanksgiving dinner. In December,we have our Christmas party where wives and otherguests are encouraged to attend.

We have started having meetings at LaurelOaks as outreach to some of our more elderlymembers. By the time this is out, we will have had asecond meeting. If you know of a Mason whootherwise is unable to attend his lodge, make theeffort to bring him to one of these meetings.

Over the past six months we have raised six tothe sublime degree of Master Mason. In October, westarted a new with an EA degree. We are lookingforward to additional petitions to continue our growth.

Again thank you for your support. May theGreat Architect of the Universe be with you, yourfamily, and friends.

Greetings from

the WestWalt Smith Senior Warden

More Masonic AwarenessNo public relations agency or advertising

campaign will substitute for the personal journeythat will establish the presence of Masonry in thepublic view. Each of us has a responsibility tosteward our respected fraternity into the future, calling on our spirit rather than deferring to thoseof our predecessors.

Consider the rough ashlar that hides thenatural beauty of the stone within. We mustuncover the Mason within us so that we canexpose Masonry to the public at large.

Relying on the rough ashlar as a metaphorfor the Mason’s journey toward enlightenment, please consider the natural resources dormant inMasonry. From the value of the individualbrothers who sit among us to the lodge-centeredassets and systems linking us on a national andinternational level, there lies a wealth of untappedresources. We must uncover these resources forthe immediate and long-term good health of ourfraternity.

Kilbourn Lodge No.3

Roofline detail.

Cornerstone showing both building dates.

by Terry Johannes

This is the third in a series about Masonic Temples no

longer being used for their original purpose. These

abandoned and reclaimed structures remain memorials

to our glorious past. Dedicated to this quest, the author

investigates the Lost Temples of Wisconsin.

-ed.

No other lost temple is seen more but rarely recognizedas the Kilbourn Masonic Temple. It is seen by thousands ofcommuters every day as they pass through the Marquetteinterchange. The old lodge building overlooks the interchange on11th street just north of Wells Street.

Kilbourn lodge was the third Wisconsin Lodge to bechartered in 1843( Older lodges were Melody Lodge #1 inMilton and Melody Lodge No. 2 in Plattville). At that time it wasknown as Milwaukee Lodge No. 3 and Byron Kilbourn, one ofthe three founders of Milwaukee, was elected Master that year.Throughout his life Kilbourn was a major benefactor ofMilwaukee Lodge and built them a Temple in 1859 on presentday Plankinton Avenue, North of Wisconsin Avenue. The rentwas $1 per year. Milwaukee Lodge changed its name to KilbournLodge in 1869. Upon his death in 1870, Byron Kilbourn's estategave Milwaukee Lodge a 999 year lease on the Temple at $1 peryear.

For nearly fifty years the Plankinton building was hometo Kilbourn Lodge. By 1880 they were the largest Lodge in thestate of Wisconsin. Tragedy struck in 1910 when fire destroyedthe old Temple.

In 1911 the present Kilbourn Masonic Temple was builtbetween Wells Street & Kilbourn Avenue on 11th Street.

It was down the street from the Ivanhoe Commandery whichstood at 10th & Wisconsin Avenue until it was demolished forthe Marquette interchange construction in the 1960's. KilbournLodge occupied this building for the next ninety years until theymerged with another lodge. In 2004 the building was sold andplans were announced to turn it into a banquet facility.

Today the Kilbourn Masonic Temple sits vacant. Thebanquet plans have yet to materialize. However "KILBOURNMASONIC TEMPLE" can still be seen along the roof line andthe corner stone shows the construction dates of the twoKilbourn Temples

Next time you're driving through the MarquetteInterchange look to the West before Wells Street and catch aglimpse of Kilbourn Lodge. If you miss it look at the "StatedCommunications" page of the Masonic Journal. A drawing ofKilbourn Lodge is used in the heading.

GW1776 Welcomes Masons from Afar

The lodge has been especially blessed this yearwith many distinguished guests and visitors. Mostrecently we were visited by Fred Shortreed of SanDiego, California, a member of La Mesa Lodge No. 407. Br. Shortreed was in Wisconsin visiting his wife’sfamily and took advantage of an invitation by hisbrother-in-law, Senior Deacon Chuck Carroll, to attendthe raising of Br. Wollen on September 29.

On September 15, the lodge was visited by Br.Marcos Campos, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He came atthe invitation of Chuck Carroll who had been informedthat Secretary Dave Haase had received a letter from theGrand Lodge, along with a letter from the Grand Lodgein Brazil.

Brother Marcos was thrilled to see how we didsome things the same, but much of the ritual wasdifferent from that in Brazil. Portuguese is the officiallanguage of Brazil, so naturally titles and words aredifferent, as are certain signs.

Brothers Keith, Horace and Tyler chat with their Brazilian

brother, Marcos.
