Gmax Mandated
ADA
Mandates compliance with ASTM F1292 for the accessible route within the ASTM F1487 use zone in the field
This is a mandate for the installed play area at any time the playground is available to the public

Owner Requirements
Gmax Compliance
Require ASTM F1292 test certificate for 1’ higher than top of all anticipated structures
Set drop height to top of barriers, climber & swings
Set Gmax and HIC values 20% less than standard
Require 5 to 8 year warranty for compliance to ASTM F1292 from original drop heights
Field test installed surface prior to payment & prior to end of warranty

Owner Requirements Accessibility
Require certificate of compliance to ASTM F1951-99 for straight line and turning
Secure the instruction for sample preparation to the laboratory performing the ASTM F1951 test
Determine compliance to ASTM F1951-99 after installation with field test or submission of sample to laboratory for test
F1951-99 field test at the option of the owner with cost to supplier for failure & owner for pass

Accessible Route
Layout on site and playground plans the 60” wide accessible route connecting ground level play components. Problem for synthetics
Ensure that the running slope using 5’ straightedge & smart level to <6.25%
Ensure that the cross slope using a 5’ straightedge & smart level to <2%
Ensure that all slopes under 5’ straightedge and smart level not >2% at transfer areas

Owner Requirements
Accessible Route
Ensure no gaps under straightedge > ½”
Check for any gaps in the surface that > ½” at edges, seams, joints, changes in colour
Check for changes in vertical height at entrances, connections to ramps or changes in materials
¼” vertical plus ¼” at 1:2 slope
Check Turf pile depth < ½“

Owner Requirements
Maintenance
Supplier to provide detailed maintenance requirements, based on assumed high use, to ensure continued compliance with original performance specification
Supplier to provide annual budget cost for required maintenance
Owner to require supplier to pay any maintenance cost greater than 25% of budgeted costs.

Owner Requirements
Warranties
Minimum 5 years for compliance to all originally specified requirements
Include time allowed for bringing the surface into compliance and cost for delays
Require compliance to originally performance for all warranty repairs

Recommendations
The Accessible Route is the most complicated portion of the playground that has significant civil rights requirements with significant penalties for owner/operators of public access playgrounds.
Owners must pass on compliance to their suppliers to ensure penalty avoidance
Suppliers must ensure compliance and cover initial and future costs
