As you know we had two important activities in July, the World Outdoor Championships and the FITA Congress were held in Leipzig. For the first time the TARGET

magazine is publishing a special edition highlighting these two activities. We wanted to produce this special edition without waiting a long time for the next scheduled maga-zine. So we will be presenting you the details and also some great photographs from Leipzig.

FITA Congress was held and was a great meeting of our Member Associations. Our main topic and item of discus-sion was the Archery World Plan, FITA’s strategic plan for the future. I am very happy that our plan was accepted by Congress and there were many useful and productive com-ments about FITA’s future.

As the President of FITA I must thank Mr. Jorg Brokamp and his team of DSB for their excellent planning, prepara-tion and presentation of a most successful World Champi-onship event. Our Championship was a very exciting event for the archers to participate in and for the spectators to see. From the spectators point of view this was a spec-tacular show.

As the FITA management we think that our sponsors are very happy for this great opportunity to work with us. Within the last two years archery has taken large and exciting steps forward, as you have all been able to see. As the FITA Presi-dent I would like to thank all our Member Associations, all our Council and Committee Members and all our staff who work very hard for the new direction of archery. Without your support and ideas we cannot advance. Our Congress slogan was “Aiming at the future”.

Comme vous le savez, nous avons eu deux événements importants en juillet, les Championnats du Monde en plein air et le Congrès de la FITA qui se sont tenus à

Leipzig. Pour la première fois, le magazine LA CIBLE publie une édition spéciale soulignant ces deux activités. Nous voulions publier cette édition spéciale sans attendre le pro-chain magazine prévu. Nous vous présentons donc ici tous les détails ainsi que de magnifiques photos de Leipzig.

Le Congrès de la FITA s’est bien déroulé et a été une grande réunion de nos Associations Membres. Notre princi-pal sujet de discussion fut le Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc, plan stratégique de la FITA pour le futur. Je suis très heureux que notre plan ait été accepté par le Congrès et nous avons reçu de nombreux commentaires utiles et productifs pour l’avenir de la FITA.

En tant que Président de la FITA, je tiens à remercier M. Jörg Brokamp et son équipe de la DSB pour leur excellente planification, préparation et présentation de ces Champion-nats du Monde qui rencontrèrent un énorme succès. Cette compétition fut un événement passionnant pour les archers qui y ont participé ainsi que pour les spectateurs. Du point de vue du public, ce fut une manifestation spectaculaire.

En tant qu’administration de la FITA, nous pensons que nos sponsors sont très heureux d’avoir cette grande oppor-tunité de travailler avec nous. Ces deux dernières années, le tir à l’arc a fait d’énormes et passionnants pas en avant, comme vous vous avez tous pu vous en rendre compte. En tant que Président de la FITA, j’aimerais remercier toutes nos Associations Membres, tous les Membres de notre Conseil et de nos Comités, ainsi que tous nos employés, qui ont travaillé très dur pour une nouvelle orientation du tir à l’arc. Sans votre soutien et vos idées, nous ne pourrions pas avancer. Le slogan de notre Congrès était «Viser le futur».

Sunday 15 July was the last day of the 44th World Championships in Leipzig! The competition ended with the Individual finals for all categories. The Compound Men and Women started in the morning and were followed by the Recurve division in the afternoon. The stands were full the whole day with 3,000 spectators enjoying this great competition! Here are the reports on the exciting medal matches:

Recurve Men

Gold Medal: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Im (KOR)The Korean Im started as the favourite in this Recurve Men gold medal match as he was No. 2 seed after the qualifi-cations. Tsyrempilov was ranked 17th. Im opened the match with 8-7-9 (24), a rather low score for the Korean. Tsyrem-pilov on the other hand started very strong with a 29-point end (10-9-10). The Russian even increased his lead to five points after the fifth arrow (47-42), but shooting a 7 with his sixth arrow allowed his opponent to come back a little (54-51). The third end was Im’s, shooting a perfect triple 10 to tie the match (81-81) with only three arrows left – Tsyrempilov shot a triple 9 at that point. The Korean

Le dimanche 15 juillet marquait la fin de ces 44e Championnats du Monde à Leipzig! La compétition se terminait en effet avec les finales individuelles pour toutes les catégories. Les Poulies débutaient le matin et étaient ensuite suivies par les Classiques l’après-midi. On affichait complet avec 3000 spectateurs venus assister à cette journée! Ci-dessous les meilleurs moments des matchs pour les médailles.

Classique Hommes

Médaille d’or: Tsyrempilov (RUS) – Im (KOR)Le Coréen Im partait favori dans la finale pour l’or en Clas-sique Hommes, puisqu’il était tête de série No 2 après les qualifications. Tsyrempilov était quant à lui 17e. Cependant, Im ouvrait le match avec 8-7-9 (24), un score plutôt bas et

inhabituel pour un Coréen. De son côté, Tsyrempilov réussissait un très bon début de match avec 29 points (10-9-10). Le Russe amenait même son avance à cinq points après la cinquième flèche (47-42), mais faisait ensuite un 7 avec la sixième, remet-tant son adversaire dans la course (54-51). La troisième volée était celle d’Im, qui réussissait un triple 10 par-fait pour revenir à égalité (81-81)

alors qu’il ne restait plus que trois flèches à venir. Tsyrem-pilov tirait un triple 9 à cet instant-là. Le Coréen continuait sur sa lancée avec un autre 10, prenant la tête pour un point avant les deux dernières flèches (91-90). Les archers tiraient ensuite tous deux un 9 pour un score provisoire de 100-99. Comme Im tirait en premier, il avait alors la possibilité de remporter le titre avant même que son adversaire ne tire sa dernière flèche… Pour cela, il devait réaliser une flèche par-faite. Ce qu’il fit magnifiquement pour devenir le nouveau Champion du Monde après un impossible retour dans un match splendide! Le score de cette partie était finalement 110-108, après que Tsyrempilov a terminé avec trois 9 pour remporter le l’argent.

Médaille de bronze: Terry (GBR) - Wills (GBR)Les deux coéquipiers Terry et Wills se retrouvaient face à face pour le bronze en Classique Hommes dans un match 100% britannique. Terry commençait de belle manière en prenant l’avantage dans la première volée avec 9-10-10, alors que Wills réalisait 10-8-10. Rien ne changeait ensuite dans la deuxième volée, avec les archers qui tiraient cha-cun deux 9 et un 10 (57-56). Ils prouvaient qu’ils étaient tout proches l’un de l’autre en tirant tous deux 27 points dans la troisième volée. Le score était toujours à l’avan-tage de Terry pour un petit point (84-83). Superbe série pour Wills avec ses trois dernières flèches, 9-10-10, pour un total de 112! Son compatriote débutait la dernière vo-lée avec un double 10, et à cet instant les spectateurs pensaient que Terry avait fait le plus dur pour gagner le match, mais sa dernière flèche n’était qu’un 8, et il y avait ainsi égalité… Dans le tie-break, Terry faisait un 9 et lais-sait finalement la victoire et le bronze à Wills, qui finissait avec un 10 parfait!

Bronze Medal: Terry (GBR) - Wills (GBR)Team-mates Terry and Wills faced each other for bronze in Recurve Men in this 100% British match. Terry started stronger in the first end, taking the lead with 9-10-10 over Wills with 10-8-10. Nothing changed in the second end with both archers shooting two 9s and a 10 (57-56). Both archers showed they were evenly matched as they both shot 27 points in the third end—Terry held his 1-point lead (84-83). Great shooting for Wills with his last three arrows with 9-10-10 for a total of 112! His fellow countryman started the last end with a double 10, and as spectators thought Terry would clinch the match with his last arrow, he scored an 8 and it was a tie. In the shoot-off Terry shot a 9 and Wills got a perfect 10 to win the bronze!

Recurve Women

Gold Medal: Park (KOR) - Valeeva (ITA)The gold medal match in the Recurve Women category was between the two top seeded archers: Park finished 1st in the qualifications, while Valeeva ranked 2nd. The two archers opened with a 10 and they both followed with an 8! Park’s third arrow (10) was better than that of Valeeva (9) by one point and she took the lead at the end of first end (28-27). Everyone thought that the Korean had already made all the difference when she took a 2-point advantage due to two

8s by Valeeva. However, the Olympic Champion scored an unusual 7 and was only one point ahead at the halfway mark (53-52). The end of the match was just crazy! In the third end, Valeeva shot a great 10-10-9 series. Park seemed to be losing track and scored 9-8-9 to trail for the first time in the match: 81-79 in favour of the Italian. Valeeva then took a 4-point advantage shooting a 10, while Park shot another 8. The latter then shot a 9 and Valeeva shot a 7—decreasing her lead to only two points before the last arrow! Park shot a perfect 10 to put some pressure on her contender, but she held her composure and also shot a 10. With 108-106, Vale-eva became the new Champion of the World!!!

Bronze Medal: Nichols (USA) - Erdyniyeva (RUS)Shooting for bronze is the most difficult—as you either get a medal or nothing! The two ladies seemed to be shaking a lot and they both started with 9s and 8s. Nichols took the lead though, shooting one point better than her opponent (26-25). A triple 9 by Erdyniyeva gave her an intermediate total of 52. This was enough to take a 2-point advantage halfway through the match, as Nichols scored 8-9-7 (50). The Ameri-can recovered in the third series, tying the score at 78 after shooting 9-10-9 against her opponent 8-9-9. Nichols opened the last end with a 9 and an 8. Erdyniyeva took a 3-point ad-vantage before the last arrow (98-95). The American closed her match with a 10 for a total of 105, and her opponent just won the bronze by a hair’s breadth with 106!

Classique Dames

Médaille d’or: Park (KOR) - Valeeva (ITA)Le match pour l’or de la catégorie Classique Dames voyait s’affronter les deux premières têtes de série: Park avait en effet terminé 1ère des qualifications, alors que Valeeva s’était classée 2e. Les deux archères débutaient avec un 10 et el-les tiraient ensuite toutes deux un 8! La troisième flèche de Park (10) était meilleure que celle de Valeeva d’un point (9), et la Coréenne prenait ainsi l’avantage à la fin de la pre-mière volée (28-27). Tout le monde pensait que celle-ci avait fait le plus dur quand elle tirait profit de deux 8 par Va-leeva pour prendre une avance de deux points. Cependant, la Championne Olympique faisait un 7 inhabituel pour elle et perdait une partie de son avance à la mi-match (53-52). La fin du match était folle! Dans la troisième volée, Valeeva tirait une magnifique série de 10-10-9. Park semblait alors perdre une partie de ses moyens (!). Elle marquait 9-8-9 pour se retrouver derrière pour la première fois du match: 81-79 en faveur de l’Italienne. Valeeva prenait ensuite une avance de quatre points en faisant un 10, profitant aussi d’un autre 8 de Park. Celle-ci réussissait ensuite un 9, mais Valeeva faisait un 7… L’Italienne perdait une partie de son avantage, qui ne s’élevait alors plus qu’à deux points avant la dernière flèche! Park réalisait un 10 parfait, mettant ainsi la pression sur son adversaire, mais Valeeva réussissait à tenir et faisait également un 10. Elle devenait ainsi la nou-velle Championne du Monde sur le score de 108-106!!!

Gold Medal: Trillus (CAN) – Gellenthien (USA)Both archers were tied at 29 after the first end, as Gellen-thien started with 10-10-9 and Trillus with 9-10-10. The two archers looked a bit stressed shooting for the world title. They both continued with 28 points in the second end for a tied score of 57 points. The Canadian and the American improved their shooting level in the second half, shooting a perfect triple 10 series for the same total of 87 each! Gellen-thien took the lead with one arrow to go, after he shot 10-10 and his opponent 9-10. He shot a 9, however, with his last ar-row, and Trillus scored a 10 to tie the match (116-116). Gellen-

Le Canadien et l’Américain augmentaient en-core leur niveau dans la deuxième partie du match, réussis-sant chacun un triple 10 parfait, avec ainsi toujours le même score pour les deux archers! Gellenthien prenait la tête alors qu’il ne restait plus qu’une flèche à tirer, après avoir réussi 10-10 alors que son adversaire faisait 9-10. Cependant, il faisait un 9 avec sa dernière flèche. Un autre triple 9 pour Duo, qui était alors trois points derrière avec trois flèches restantes (83). Tous deux ouvraient la dernière volée avec un 10. Les deux archers réussissaient ensuite un 9 et restaient ainsi à deux points d’écart. Damsbo terminait sur un tir parfait (10) pour gagner la médaille de bronze devant Duo (9). Score final: 115-111.

Compound Women

Miss Salvi continued with 9-10-9 and increased her lead to 57-54. Loginova scored 9-9-10 but was still trailing by two points (84-82) with only three arrows left. Salvi increased her lead in the last end to clinch victory by 111-107. After the Indoor title in March this year, Salvi is now double World Champion with both the Indoor and the Outdoor titles!

Les deux archères continuaient avec la même série de 9-10-10, et le score restait en faveur de la Française pour deux points (87-85). Avant la dernière flèche, Bouillot possédait toujours ses deux points d’avance, mais elle faisait alors un mauvais 8… Comme son adversaire réussissait alors un 10, elles se retrouvaient à égalité à la fin du match. Bouillot se reprenait bien et lâchait une flèche parfaite (10) dans le barrage. Markovic marquait un 9 et laissait le bronze à son adversaire française.

The teams shot their final matches on 14 July 2007. Compound Men and Women started in the morning with the semi-finals followed by the Bronze and Gold matches. In the afternoon, the Recurve division took the field to shoot their finals. Here are the reports on the medal matches.

Recurve Men

Gold Medal: Korea (1) – Great Britain (2)The male Korean team hoped to copy their female coun-terparts who had just won the gold medal but commencing their final with Great Britain with 8-10-8 was maybe not the

Médaille d’or: Corée (1) – Grande-Bretagne (2)L’équipe masculine coréenne espérait bien imiter son ho-mologue féminine, qui venait juste de gagner la médaille

La dernière volée ne changeait rien, la Corée ajoutant un autre titre de Champion du Monde à sa longue liste de victoires. Avec 10-10-9-10-10, les Coréens avaient remporté la médaille d’or avant même leur dernière flèche, par Kim (9). Score final: 224-214.

Médaille de bronze: Taipei chinois (4) – Pologne (11)Kuo, Liu et Wang, du Taipei chinois, rencontraient Piatek, Proc et Dobrowolski, de la Pologne. A égalité après trois flèches, les deux équipes ayant fait 9-8-9, les archers po-lonais tiraient 10-8-10 pour prendre un petit avantage sur leurs adversaires (54-53). Les athlètes du Taipei chinois débutaient leur volée suivante avec 7-10-9, mais ils réussis-saient ensuite une série parfaite de 10-10-10 pour marquer un total intermédiaire de 109. A ce moment critique du jeu, les Polonais semblaient souffrir de la pression et faisaient 10-9-7-7-9-9. Ils étaient menés de quatre points avec 105. With 10-10-9-10-10, the Koreans had clinched the gold medal before the last arrow was shot by Kim (9). Final score: 224-214.

At this critical moment of the match, Poland seemed to suffer from pressure and scored 10-9-7-7-9-9. They were behind by four points with 105. In the third end, they came round a little, shooting 9-8-8-9-9-10 (158), but

Piatek and his fellow countrymen finished with a superb 57 end (10-8-10-9-10-10) and a total of 215 points but this was not enough to take bronze and Chinese Taipei won this duel with 218 points.

Valeeva, Tonetta et Lionetti ouvraient la marque avec 8-8-9 (25), alors que Folkard, Williamson et Burgess débutaient avec 8-10-9 (27). La Grande-Bretagne menait l’Italie après trois flèches. Chinese Taipei finished with 10-9-9 and 212 points. It is worth noting that in this match their first archer Yuan shot eight 10s with her eight arrows! Unfortunately for her, she could not prevent her team from losing the match, leaving the defending champions to win another World title! Korea finished with 10-10-9 and a total of 226.

Bronze Medal: Great Britain (4) – Italy (6)Great Britain versus Italy shooting for the World Champion-ships bronze medal! Valeeva, Tonetta and Lionetti opened with 8-8-9 (25), while Folkard, Williamson and Burgess started with 8-10-9 (27). Great Britain led Italy after three arrows. The first end finished with an 8-9-9 for the Italians, whereas the British shot 8-10-9 to take a 3-point advantage (54-51). Taking advantage of a 7 by the British Burgess, Italy came back in the second end and tied the match at the halfway mark (105-105). A better performance by Italy (10-7-8-9-10-9), but not enough to stay level with Great-Britain (10-9-10-9-9-8) after the third end: the British led by two points (160-158) at that point. With their last six arrows, Valeeva and team-mates scored 8-8-10-8-9-9, too many 8s for them to hope to win this bronze medal match. Great Britain finished the match shooting 9-9-10-9-10-6 and clinched victory by 213-210.

Compound Men

Gold Medal: USA (1) – Australia (2)The top two qualifying teams faced off for the Team Com-pound Men’s gold in the last match of the morning. The Americans Wilde R., Willet Jr and Gellenthien started the match with 10-10-9-10-9-9 (57 out of a possible 60). The Aus-tralians, Freeman, Timms and Coghlan scored 9-9-10-9-10-9 (56), giving the lead to the USA by one point. Trailing behind after the first end, Australia shot first in the second. They started with 9-10-10 (85) and the USA shot a perfect 10-10-10 series to gain one more point (87). The Aussies finished the second end with 10-9-10 for a halfway score of 114. The Americans followed with 9-10-10 to enjoy a 2-point advan-tage at that point. The 2003 World Champion Freeman and his team-mates continued with 10-9-10-9-10-10 (172). USA, led by 2006 World Cup Series winner, Wilde R., managed to maintain their slim lead with 10-10-9-10-9-10 (174). A very un-certain, high-level match with no archer shooting out of the yellow (10 or 9 points) to this point!!! Australia followed with 10-9-10 and the USA with 10-9-10 (201-203) with only three

Les Australiens mettaient la pression avec trois dernières flè-ches parfaites (10-10-10!). Comme ses compatriotes Wilde et Willet faisaient respectivement 9 et 10, c’est la dernière flèche de Gellenthien qui allait décider de la victoire ou d’un barrage… Le jeune Américain ne tremblait pas et marquait un autre 10 pour offrir la médaille d’or à son équipe! The match was tied after the first six ar-rows (55-55) as Italy scored 9-9-9 and Belgium 10-8-10. Salvi, Solato and Anastasio were trailing by two points at the half-way mark: they shot 9-8-9-9-10-10 for an intermediate total of 110, whereas Dessoy, Maemhouts and Willems scored 10-9-10-9-9-10 (112). The latter increased their advantage by one in the third end: the score was then 168-165 with only six arrows to go. After 21 arrows, the Italian team had an inter-mediate score of 192. The Belgians increased their lead with a score of 196 points. The final three arrows of the Italians were 10-9-8 for a total of 219. With 9-9-9 and a 223 score, Bel-gium took the first gold of the day: they are the new World Champions in Team Compound Women!

Bronze Medal: USA (1) – France (3)France was shooting first on target No. 2: Fabre started with a 10, Chesse followed with a 9 and Bouillot with a 10 for an intermediate total of 29. The Americans Van Natta, Nicely and Anschutz opened the match with a perfect end of 30. Fabre followed with a bad 8, but her team-mates shot 10 and 9 for an intermediate mark of 56. USA increased their advantage to 4 points after they shot another perfect 30! The Americans increased their lead to eight points after Chesse shot a 6 in the second end (116-108). The French managed to come back a little in the third end, taking advantage of two 8s by their opponents Nicely and Anschutz (168-163). The Americans lost one more point to the French (196-192) with 3 arrows to shoot. France finished with a strong end of 29 and put a little bit of pressure on their opponent, but the USA also managed a 29-point end to clinch and win bronze: 225-221.

On 13 July 2007, the battle for Olympic places was very intense in the Recurve division, since this team event qualified the top 8 teams with three archers each—24 places for the men and 24 for the women—for next year’s Olympic Games. As host country of the 2008 Olympic Games, China automatically gets a complete team (3 archers) both in the Men and Women categories. In addition, 16 individuals per gender also earned Olympic places for their countries.

Below, we report on the most exciting matches that led to the Olympic qualifications, and also give an overview of the Olympic team and individual qualifications by country.

Recurve Men

1/8 final: Italy (4) – India (14)Mamma mia! All Italians were holding their breath in this close match against India. In fact, the Indian team was lead-ing after the first end by 55-52. Frangilli even shot a 5 in the second end, and this could have been a disaster if Di Buo

Le 13 juillet 2007, la lutte pour les places olympiques fut très disputée dans la division Classique, puisque cette compétition par équipes offrait 24 places pour les hommes et 24 autres pour les femmes. Cela signifiait que les 8 premières équipes qualifiaient trois archers chacune pour les Jeux Olympiques de l’an prochain. En tant que pays organisateur des Jeux Olympiques 2008, la Chine se voit aussi offrir automatiquement une équipe complète (3 archers) tant dans la catégorie Hommes que chez les Dames. 1/8 de finale: Italie (4) – Inde (14)Mamma mia! Tous les Italiens retenaient leur souffle dans un tour de tous les dangers contre les Indiens. En effet, l’équipe indienne prenait la tête dans la première volée par

A ce moment de la partie, l’Inde maintenait son avance de 3 points (106-103). La volée suivante permettait aux Italiens de revenir et d’égaliser à 159. Les six dernières flèches ne changeaient rien à la situation, ce qui menait les deux équipes vers un barrage (212-212). Dans la série supplémentaire de trois flèches, Frangilli débutait avec un 8, alors que Banerjee donnait un avantage d’un point à l’Inde grâce à un 9. Le Champion Olympique Galiazzo et l’Indien Murmu tiraient ensuite tous deux un 8, laissant l’avantage à l’Inde. C’est fi-nalement Di Buo qui libérait son pays en réussissant un X10 parfait, alors que Rai ne pouvait faire mieux que 8. L’Italie s’est qualifiée in extremis pour les Jeux Olympiques de l’année prochaine!

1/8 de finale: Canada (9) – Mexique (8)Les archers canadiens se sont qualifiés pour les Jeux! C’est un résultat exceptionnel pour eux. Après s’être classés 9e des qualifications, ils rencontraient les Mexicains, têtes de série No 8, pour l’un des matchs les plus incertains du pre-mier tour en Classique Hommes. Le match était serré après la première volée, avec les Canadiens qui prenaient un petit avantage de deux points sur leurs adversaires (55-53). Ils réussissaient ensuite à augmenter leur avance à 111-105 et 164-154 pour se mettre à l’abri de toute mauvaise surprise. Le Canada remportait finalement la victoire et trois places olympiques sur le score de 220-207.

1/8 de finale: Japon (7) – USA (10)Après la première volée, le Japon menait d’un point devant les USA (56-55). Ensuite, les Américains prenaient l’avantage, menant par 110-109 à mi-parcours. Les Japonais revenaient à un point, avec six flèches restantes. Le score était alors de 163-162 en faveur des USA. Mais les Japonais perdaient tout espoir en réalisant un 7 avec leur 22e flèche et laissaient la victoire à leurs adversaires par 219-213.

Les équipes et individuels qualifiés pour les Jeux OlympiquesLes huit gagnants des 1/8 de finale remportaient cha-cun trois places olympiques. Ce sont: la Corée, le Canada, l’Ukraine, le Taipei chinois, l’Italie, la Pologne, les USA et la

Italy barely qualified for the Olympics next year!

1/8 final: Canada (9) – Mexico (8)The Canadian archers made their way to the Olympics! This is an amazing result for them. After ranking 9th in the quali-fications, Canada had to face No. 8 Mexico for one of the most uncertain matches of this first Recurve Men round. The match was tight after the first end, with Canada achiev-ing a 2-point advantage of over Mexico (55-53). They then managed to increase their lead to 111-105 and 164-154 to shelter themselves from any surprises. Canada clinched victory and three Olympic places with a score of 220-207.

1/8 final: Japan (7) – USA (10)After the first end, Japan was ahead of USA by one point (56-55). Then, the Americans took the advantage, leading 110-109 halfway through. The Japanese came back to within one point with six arrows left. The score was then 163-162 in favour of USA. But the Japanese lost all hope when they shot a 7 with their 22nd arrow and their opponent took the victory: 219-213 USA.

Teams qualified for the OlympicsThe eight winners of the 1/8 finals have secured three Olym-pic places each. They are: Korea, Canada, Ukraine, Chinese Taipei, Italy, Poland, USA and Great Britain. Since the host country China lost in the first round today, only the top 8 countries in Leipzig (quarter-finalists) get three spots for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

According to the individual results, two archers from Russia, Malaysia, Australia and Japan qualified for the Olympic Games. One archer each from Mexico, Sweden, Denmark, Iran, Bulgaria, Germany, Turkey and Romania also qualified.

1/8 final: DPR Korea (13) – Great Britain (4)The match between DPR Korea and Great Britain led to an un-expected shoot-off. The afternoon started in a bad way for the British ladies who were behind 96-101 and then 146-150. They came back to tie the match at 197 after the 24 regular arrows. Tied again after the first additional arrow (7-7), the second shoot-off arrow was the decisive one, as Ri and Wil-liamson both shot an arrow that was close to the 8 line. How-ever, the British arrow was touching it (8 points), while the

one of DPR Korea was just out (7 points), giving Great Britain a 1-point advantage at that time. With their third additional ar-row, Kwon shot a perfect 10, whereas Burgess scored a 9, and the two teams were tied again! This meant three additional arrows, which the two teams started with a 9 and an 8. The last arrow was this time decisive with Burgess saving Great Britain with a 10 against a 9 for the opponent.

1/8 final: Russia (5) – India (12)Another great upset for the Russians today—they also lost in the Compound division in the morning. Seeded No. 5, Rus-sia faced the No. 12 seed, India, in this first round. Russia’s first end was low with 10-9-9-8-7-6 (49) versus India’s 10-9-9-9-7-7 (51). The Indians increased their advantage to four points (104-100) halfway through. The difference between the two teams kept increasing (157-150) up to the end of the match with India winning 206-198.

Grande-Bretagne. Comme la Chine a perdu au premier tour à Leipzig, seuls les 8 premiers pays de cette épreuve (quart de finalistes) ont remporté trois places pour les Jeux de Pékin en 2008. Il n’y a donc pas eu de “lucky loser” (heureux perdant) en Classique Hommes!

Selon les résultats individuels, deux archers de la Russie, de la Malaisie, de l’Australie et du Japon sont qualifiés. Des pays comme le Mexique, la Suède, le Danemark, l’Iran, la Bulgarie, l’Allemagne, la Turquie et la Roumanie sont aussi qualifiés.

1/8 de final: Corée du Nord (13) – Grande-Bretagne (4)Le match entre la Corée du Nord et la Grande-Bretagne mena à un tie-break inattendu. L’après-midi avait mal com-mencé pour les Britanniques, qui étaient derrière, 96-101 et 146-150. Elles revenaient in extremis pour égaliser à 197 après 24 flèches. Elles devaient ainsi faire une prolongation de trois flèches. L’égalité tenait toujours après la première flèche supplémentaire (7-7). Sur la deuxième flèche, les ar-chères Ri (PRK) et Williamson (GBR) étaient toutes proches de la ligne du 8. Cependant, la flèche britannique était juste dedans, alors que celle de son adversaire était juste dehors (7 points). Cependant, à la troisième flèche, Kwon tirait un excellent 10, alors que Burgess réalisait un 9. Les deux équi-pes étaient de nouveau à égalité! Il fallait donc tirer trois flèches supplémentaires. 1/8 final: USA (11) – Italy (6)Italy suffered up to the very last arrow in this very important match qualifier for the Olympics. The two teams were tied after the first end at 55 points each. Italy then took a 2-point advantage on the score of 107-105. Taking advantage of a 3 shot by USA with their last arrow in the third end, the Italian ladies increased their lead to ten points with 6 arrows to go (155-145). The last arrows of the match were nerve-racking for the Italian fans, as their team’s last arrow was a 4. But finally, Italy’s advantage proved enough and they clinched the match and three Olympic spots: 203-198.

Teams and Individuals qualified for the OlympicsThe eight winners of the 1/8 finals have secured three Olym-pic places each. They are: Korea, France, India, Great Britain, Poland, Italy, and Chinese Taipei. As China also finished in the top 8 in the Women category, a 9th team was therefore qualified. The lucky loser was Colombia with 205 points! Colombia already had to go through a shoot-off in qualifica-tions in order to play the matches!

According to the individual results at the Leipzig World Championships, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, DPR Korea, Japan and Netherlands qualified two archers. The USA, Kazakhstan, Denmark and Greece qualified one place.

1/8 de finale: Russie (5) – Inde (12)Une autre défaite mortifiante pour la Russie après celle en Poulies le matin. La Russie était pourtant 5e des quali-fications. La première volée était très basse avec 10-9-9-8-7-6 (49) pour la Russie et 10-9-9-9-7-7 (51) pour l’Inde. Les Indiennes augmentaient ensuite leur avantage à quatre points à la mi-temps (104-100). La différence entre les deux équipes ne cessait ensuite de s’accroître jusqu’à la fin du match (157-150) pour finir à 206-198.

1/8 de finale: USA (11) – Italie (6)L’Italie allait souffrir jusqu’à la dernière flèche dans ce match très important. Les deux équipes étaient à égalité après la première volée avec 55 points chacune. L’Italie prenait ensuite un avantage de deux points sur le score de 107-105. Puis, en profitant d’un 3 tiré par l’équipe américaine en fin de troisième volée, les Italiennes augmentaient leur avance à 10 points, avec encore six flèches à tirer (155-145). Les Italiennes souffraient néanmoins nerveusement sur la fin en tirant un 4… Leur avantage était néanmoins as-sez grand pour gagner le match et trois places olympiques (203-198)!

Les équipes et individuelles qualifiées pour les Jeux OlympiquesLes huit équipes vainqueurs des 1/8 de finales se sont donc chacune assuré trois places olympiques. Ce sont: la Corée, la France, l’Inde, la Grande-Bretagne, la Pologne, l’Italie, le Taipei chinois et la Chine. Comme cette dernière est en fait qualifiée d’office, la neuvième équipe de la compétition est aussi prise. L’heureuse perdante est la tête de série No 16, la Colombie, avec 205 points! Les Colombiennes avaient déjà dû passer par les barrages en qualifications pour avoir le droit de tirer en match!

Grâce aux résultats individuels à ces Championnats du Monde de Leipzig, la Russie, l’Ukraine, la Géorgie, la Corée DPR, le Japon et les Pays Bas ont qualifié deux archers. Les USA, le Kazakhstan, le Danemark et la Grèce ont qualifié une place.

On a une tradition de victoires en Corée, et je regardais le tir à l’arc quand j’étais enfant. Je suis très fier de perpétuer cette tra-dition. Park Young Sooh (KOR) – FITA JudgeI competed at many World Championships. I was there in 1979, in Germany, and I believe it was the first Korean participa-tion. Back then, every body was watching the American archers. Then, of course, Korea has had its fair share of coverage for the last 25 years. However, in Leipzig, I think there are many countries with high level and it is great to see so many coun-tries shooting for medals today and yesterday.

Magdalena and Carolina (POL) – fansIt was exciting to be here. We come from Jedrzejow (POL). We were cheering for the Pol-

ish team yesterday. They shot well but they didn’t win. We think they were too much stressed! We enjoyed our time very much!

Thomas Röher (GER) – fan and Bhutan team managerThe Bhutan team came to my town for three months thanks to the help of the German government. I was asked if I could help the Bhutan team and I became their team manager. It has been a great World Championships and I think people from the whole Germany came to watch it. It’s a lot of peo-ple and a great atmosphere.

Stefanie and Lena (GER) – fansFantastic! It was cool! We cheered for the English men team. We think they are awesome. We knew a bit about archery, because we know the people in the club in our town.

On m’a demandé si je pouvais aider l’équipe du Bhoutan et je suis devenu son manager. Ce fut un magnifique Championnat du Monde et je pense que des gens des 200 clubs de toute l’Al-lemagne sont venus ici pour y assister. Ce sont beaucoup de personnes et une superbe ambiance. »

Stefanie et Lena (GER) – fans« Fantastique! C’était cool! Nous avons encouragé l’équipe masculine anglaise. Nous les trouvons mignons. Nous connaissons un petit peu le tir à l’arc, car nous connaissons les gens du club de notre village. »

Even though firearms replaced the bow and arrow on the field on battle, shooting a bow and arrow was still practiced and it became a discipline based upon shooting an arrow the greatest distance. With the use of an Ottoman recurve composite distance bow, archers were able to shoot distances that today modern technology bows cannot reach. Some of the records have not been broken in over 400 years.

The 47th FITA Congress was hosted in Leipzig on July 5-6 and made history in adopting the Archery World Plan for 2007-2012.

The congress delegates were welcomed in a fully archery-branded room, which set the scene for one of the most successful congresses of FITA history. It was also the first time that Dr. Ugur Erdener chaired Congress as President.

The Archery World PlanThe vision is: By 2012, archery will be internationally recog-nized as one of the important Olympic Sports.

The Archery World Plan aims at ensuring the continued development and growth of the sport of Archery through the 2012 Olympic Games and beyond. The plan is to connect all the resources of the archery family (FITA, Continental Associations, Member Associations and all supporters) and to become an attractive partner for the investors, the spon-sors, the televisions, the Olympic family and the fans. The plan has five targets. Although the work has already started and will continue in all areas, each year we will focus on one target, as described below:

Le plan est de mettre en re-lation toutes les ressources de la famille du tir à l’arc (FITA, Associations Continentales, Associations Membres et sup-porters internes) pour devenir un partenaire attractif pour les investisseurs, les sponsors, les télévisions, la famille olympique et les fans. Le plan a cinq cibles et, bien que le tra-vail ait déjà commencé et continuera dans tous les domaines, chaque année l’accent sera mis sur une cible en priorité:

Target 2007: Identity“By the end of 2007, a unified and simplified identity for International Archery is accepted by FITA, Continental As-sociations and Member Associations.”

Target 2008: Events“By the end of 2008, all of FITA’s international events have concrete plans to become more attractive for athletes, spectators, partners, and television viewers.”

Target 2009: Promotion“By the end of 2009, International Archery is consistently promoted and widely recognized by external parties.”

Target 2010: Partnerships“By the end of 2010, a majority of FITA’s budget is supported by partnerships, other than IOC funding, which helps to en-sure the future stability and growth of Archery.”

Target 2011: Expansion“By the end of 2011, FITA and its Continental and Member As-sociations have the structure and tools needed to sustain the expansion of International Archery.”

Each target will be divided into several objectives, and task forces will be appointed to achieve them.

As soon as the Archery World Plan was accepted by con-gress, delegates gathered into groups of six to discuss the implementation of the plan. This allowed the Member As-sociations represented to immediately implement the con-nection process.

CouncilMr Paulsen (NOR) was re-elected as 1st Vice-President.Mr Diaz Bazan (ESA) was elected as Vice-President. He re-

places Mr Smith (USA) who ended his term and will become the new FITA Treasurer for 2 years.

Mr Gianni Mangino retired as FITA Treasurer after 28 years of service to FITA. He started as treasurer in the Ber-lin congress in 1979 and served under three FITA Presidents. He will remain involved in archery as a member of the Inter-nal Audit Committee. At the end of Congress, Gianni Mangino was given a well-deserved Honorary Treasurer position. It is expected that the Treasurer position will be removed from the FITA Constitution in 2009 and replaced by a different financial and audit structure.

Mr Lindau (GER), Mr Gao (CHN), Mrs Womersley (AUS) and Mrs Medwed (AUT) were re-elected to their Council positions. FITA is very pleased to welcome Mr Kim (KOR), a member of the most successful Member Association, as a new member of FITA Council.

Board of JusticeFITA Honorary President Mr Gnecchi-Ruscone (ITA), Mr

Hur (KOR), Mr Chaplin (AUS), Mr Baharuddin (MAS) and Mr Helfrich (GER) were named to the Board of Justice. They will have the task to reform the Board of Justice rules, which are due for revision. They will have to come up with new proposals by the 2009 Congress.

Permanent CommitteesMr Schulz (GER), Mr Miller (USA) and Mr Cinnirella (ITA)

were re-elected to the Constitution and Rules Committee.Mr Bolstad (NOR), Mr Lovell (GBR) and Mr Gotelli (ITA) will

join the Field Archery Committee.Mr Wilmann (NOR) and Mr Font Milian (CUB) were re-elect-

ed to the Judges Committee and Mr Buhagiar (MLT) will join them. This is the first time FITA has an officer from Malta.

Mr Bearman (GBR), Mr Kim (KOR) and Mr Oddo (ITA) are the new members of the Coaches Committee. Mr Oddo was Secretary General of FITA many years ago and is making his return to FITA in a completely new position.

M. Gianni Mangino (ITA) a pris sa retraite comme Trésorier de la FITA après 28 ans. Il avait commencé comme Trésorier au Congrès de Berlin en 1979 et servi sous trois Présidents de la FITA. Il restera impliqué dans le tir à l’arc comme mem-bre de la Commission d’Audit. A la fin du Congrès, Gianni Mangino a reçu le titre de Trésorier Honoraire. A l’avenir, il est à prévoir que la position de trésorier sera remplacée par une structure financière et d’audit différente lors du Congrès de 2009.

Member AssociationsAruba, Montenegro, Palau and Samoa had received tempo-rary memberships during the last Congress in Madrid 2005. They have now been permanently accepted into the FITA family.

Unfortunately, some Member Associations have lost their active status or were no longer in good standing. The Congress therefore expelled Central African Republic, Cam-eroon, Ghana, Northern Mariana Islands, Senegal and Turk-menistan. The FITA Congress also gave a final warning to Kuwait, Syrian Arab Republic and Zimbabwe that, if there is no significant progress in the next two years, they will be proposed for expulsion in 2009. FITA strives to have stron-ger Member Associations and, with these decisions, sends a clear message that only active members can continue to be members of FITA.

The Congress accepted an innovative membership fee system that will not only take into account the size of the association but also the economic level of the respective country based on a UN classification. This will create soli-darity between all Member Associations of FITA while main-taining the same income in membership fees. This income is given by FITA to the respective Continental Associations and helps the Continental Associations to function.

AdministrationThe Congress approved the 2005 and 2006 accounts and the report of the auditors, as well as the interpretations of the rules and the bylaws that were approved by Council.

Other important matters FITA Congress very much welcomed the decision of the

IOC to organize the Youth Olympic Games. The FITA President has asked the chair of the Youth Committee to immediately develop, with the FITA staff, an implementa-tion plan. This will include a change of the FITA Calendar,

Le Congrès a accepté une solution innovatrice pour les cotisations de membres qui prendra en compte non seule-ment la taille des Associations Membres mais aussi le ni-veau économique des pays selon le classement des Nations Unies. Cela créera un courant de solidarité entre les Asso-

Autres affaires importantes Le Congrès de la FITA a été enthousiasmé par la déci-

sion du CIO d’organiser les Jeux Olympiques d’été pour la Jeunesse. Le Président de la FITA a demandé immé-diatement au chef du Comité des Jeunes de développer un projet avec les employés de la FITA à ce sujet. Cela impliquera un changement dans le calendrier de la FITA puisque les Championnats du Monde Juniors sont ac-tuellement tenus lors des années paires. Si la FITA veut les utiliser comme qualifications pour ces Jeux Olympi-ques d’été pour la Jeunesse, ils devront se dérouler les années impaires.

Le Congrès de la FITA a donné un mandat clair au Conseil pour finaliser l’accord avec le Comité International Para-lympique et transférer la gouvernance du para-tir à l’arc auprès de la FITA. Le Congrès de la FITA aura néanmoins le dernier mot pour officialiser ce transfert. La FITA est très satisfaite puisque le tir à l’arc est un sport dans le-quel les para-athlètes peuvent concourir en conjonction avec les autres athlètes, que ce soit aux Championnats du Monde ou aux Jeux Olympiques. Cet accord permet-tra aussi le même transfert au niveau national. Dans quelques Associations Membres, c’est déjà le cas, et les Pays-Bas ont offert de partager leur expérience à ce su-jet.

FITA Congress gave a clear mandate to FITA Council to finalize the agreement with IPC for the transfer of gover-nance of Para-Archery to FITA. FITA Congress will, howev-er, have a final say on this transfer at the 2009 Congress, where certain constitutional and rules changes will need to be made to finalize such transfer. FITA is very satis-fied with this transfer, since Archery is the only sport where para-athletes can compete in conjunction with other athletes in the same event at the Olympics and World Championships. This agreement will also cause a transfer at the national level between the National Para-lympic Committee and the FITA Member Association. In some of FITA’s Member Associations this is already the case, and the Netherlands offered assistance to all other Member Associations to complete this transfer.

TSE Consulting, which is FITA’s partner in the Archery World Plan, made a summary of the discussion groups


and 98% of the delegates stated that they would wel-come change. A majority also endorsed the proposal of the plan to differentiate the competition between com-pound and recurve. The clear statement was made that FITA is the one that needs to make the changes so that change doesn’t manage FITA.

A progress report was given by BOCOG and LOCOG and FITA looks forward to very successful Olympics. The layout of the new archery venue in Beijing is exciting. We also welcome the promotional events planned for London at Lords later this year. We have also received excellent progress reports from the World Championship hosts of Korea, India and Great Britain.

The former 1st Vice President and member of the steer-ing group on the Archery World Plan, Mr Theeuws (BEL) spoke to Congress on the progress of FITA and how FITA is taking the right steps towards the future.

At the end of the Congress, the FITA President Dr Erdener stated,

“This Congress 2007 in Leipzig was a crucial meeting and sets the right direc-tion for the future of archery. I am de-lighted that we ap-proved the Archery World Plan 2007-2012 and I think that the working groups have been very pro-ductive in their meetings. I am convinced that Archery is on the right road to become an important Olympic sport in the near future.”

FITA targets a bright future.

Le deuxième jour, TSE Consulting, qui est le consultant pour le Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc, a fait un résumé des questions posées au sein des groupes de discussions. Une superbe majorité de 98% des délégués ont dit qu’ils soutiendraient les changements. Une majorité s’est aussi déclarée en faveur d’une différentiation entre les Poulies et les Classiques. En résumé, la FITA doit gérer les changements, pour éviter que le changement ne la dépasse.

Des rapports ont été présen-tés par le BOCOG et le LOCOG, et la FITA se réjouit de Jeux Olympiques très prometteurs. Les terrains de Beijing sont impressionnants, et nous nous réjouissons aussi des événements promotionnels planifiés au Lords de Londres plus tard dans l’année. Le Congrès a aussi reçu un ex-cellent rapport des prochains Championnats du Monde en Corée, en Inde et en Grande-Bretagne.

Un ancien 1er Vice-Président et membre du comité en charge du Plan de Tir à l’Arc, M. Theeuws (BEL), a fait une présentation sur les progrès faits par la FITA ces dernières années. La FITA va dans la bonne direction.

Je suis ravi que nous ayons approuvé le Plan Mondial du Tir à l’Arc 2007-2012 et je pense que les groupes de travail ont été très productifs dans leurs meetings. Je suis convaincu que le tir à l’arc est sur la bonne voie pour devenir un sport olympique important dans un avenir proche. »
