Two Louisiana Tech students foundthemselves nearly 10,000 miles away fromhome over winter break by arguing.

The Tech debate team sent Ben Mark-way and Sam Hathorn to Chennai, India, toparticipate in the World Championship ofDebate.

The competition was held in India thisyear where some of the best debaters inthe world come together to compete, saidShane Puckett, Tech debate coach andspeech communication instructor. All ofthe debates are held in English, and theresanywhere from 400-700 teams from univer-sities all around the world.

Tech was allowed to send two debatemembers to the tournament as a result ofthe teams continued success over the pastfew years, he said.

The topics range from philosophicalprinciples to current events, he said.

Markway, a senior accounting major andconcurrent business administration gradu-ate student, said they were the rst teamfrom Louisiana to go in the 34-year historyof the tournament.

It says a lot about Louisiana Tech de-bate, he said.

Hathorn, a sophomore education ma-or, said they had to change their practiceregimens in order to prepare for the tourna-ment.

Aitazaz Hassan Bangash was ateenager thrown into a veryreal world situation. MalalaYousafzai is a girl who grew up un-der extreme conditions. However,

both of their lives changed dramat-

ically by facing these things withacts of courage.Bangash, 14, was on his way to

school in Pakistan on Jan. 6 whensomething unexpected happened.A suicide bomber, who had askedBangash where his school was ear-lier that day, walked into the Ibra-himzai School with the intent to killhundreds of students and teachers.

Bangash recognized what wasgoing on and tackled the bomber, causing the bomber to panic anddetonate the bomb.

The bomber and Bangash bothdied and two more were injured,

    but most importantly, Bangash

saved hundreds of lives.Yousafzai, 16, is a Pakistani ac-

tivist who has been in the spotlightsince 2009, when she wrote a blogdetailing her time spent living un-der rule of the Taliban.

On Oct. 9, 2012, Taliban gun-men shot Yousafzai in the head inan assassination attempt. Following

that incident, she became an inter-national hero. She survived the assassination

attempt and graced the cover ofTime Magazines The 100 MostInuential People in the World is-sue, spoke at Harvard University, met with President Barack Obamaand gave a speech at the UnitedNations calling for worldwide ac-cess to education.

Yousafzai was later nominatedfor a Nobel Peace Prize, makingher the youngest nominee in thehistory of the prize.

Children like Bangash andYousafzai are normal teenagers

who took a leap of courage. Storieslike these come from all over theworld.

A California high school base- ball team lifted a car to save agirl who was trapped under it. A14-year-old in Michigan protecteda rape victim from her assailant.

    These stories show just how

easy it is for someones life to bechanged, or even the world as aresult.

Sometimes, it just takes a stepout of your comfort zone and thecourage to make that difference.

The old saying of children arethe leaders of the future is true;however, children are also turninginto the heroes of today, makingthem leaders in their own right.

God walks the Earth, and the newest chap-ter of the gospel arrived this year in the form ofKanye Wests Yeezus.

This is Kanye Wests rst album since 2010masterpiece My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fan-tasy, that embraced both minimalism and Westsegotistic personality in force.

Yeezus is reminiscent in places of 808s andHeartbreak, Wests 2008 album that served asthe eulogy for both the death of his mother andhis engagement.

The end of the album exposes an emotionalWest, lamenting the loss of his previously men-tioned engagement whilst, in other songs, cele-brating his newfound love in Kim Kardashian.

Though some said his relationship with Kar-dashian would reect poorly on his talent, believ-ing that, not unlike a succubus, she would striphim of his talent, Yeezus did not disappoint.

The album begins on a rage-lled note as

    speech.His aggres-

    sion continuesthrough the

politically pro-vocative NewSlaves in whichhe bemoans

young malesobsession withdesigner clothesand fashion la-

    bels.The album

then takes atemporarily composed tempo with a Justin Ver-non and Chief Keef collaboration on the track

Hold My Liquor, in which he raps about adestructive relationship. It can be guessed he iseither rapping about his failed engagement withAlexis Phifer or his relationship with model Am-

ber Rose. The album hits another high note with Blood

on the Leaves, a track sampling the Billie Holi-day song Strange Fruit, in which she singsabout the widespread practice of lynching during

and due to his religious beliefs is unable to con-vince her to have an abortion, and must thereforeface his wife. It is a scathing view on the lifestyleof the rich and famous.

The song ends on a high note with Bound2, in which West raps about the stress placedon him by his relationship with Kardashian, arelationship which he considers his last. He isunaware of how to proceed with a woman henever wants to leave, having never dealt with thesituation before.

West has come to baptize nonbelievers in thegospel of Yeezus.

The album is dissonant, discordant, political, emotional, ridiculous and sexual. Wests mega-lomaniacal personality is dissatised with onetheme, and this album ts with his dissatisfaction

with the state of hip-hop music as a whole.Yeezus just rose again.
