WELCOME Week 5 of our enforced home stays. We have probably discovered all those items we had thought we had lost forever as we seek ever increasing numbers of inaccessible places to clean. We have spoken to relatives more often than for many years. We are now feeling even more isolated from the social life many of us enjoyed for a number of years. We have discovered innovative ways of socialising finding the strength to cope as a result of the wonderful support given by our community. RACHEL’S CHALLENGE Grow your own…

With this extra time at home as well as the struggles of accessing supermarkets, now might be a good time to try growing some of your own vegetables! Even those not fortunate enough to have a garden could give one or two of these a try in pots on a window sill or a balcony. Maybe you could grow one or two and a friend or neighbour could grow something different and you could share the produce for a bigger variety?

The following guide is taken from www.lovethegarden.com/uk-en but there are plenty of other pages full of helpful information whether you are a seasoned professional or just getting started including www.rhs.org.uk/Advice/Grow-Your-Own/Vegetables.

⬤ = Sow inside (on a window sill, unheated greenhouse, coldframe) ⬤ = Sow outside (direct into prepared garden soil) ⬤ = Move outside (when conditions are favourable) ⬤ = Harvest (when ready)

SHARE THIS INVITATION TO JOIN THE TELEPHONE SUPPORT NETWORK RUN BY THE

HUB. The Thursday Seniors Club have been running a telephone network that operates 24/7. This is aimed mainly at those who are isolating alone and offers regular contact from the trained volunteers offering support and encouragement to anyone who contacts us. This present crisis means that for some it is the only face to face opportunity to meet friends during the week. This makes the telephone contact system even more important. The Hub is inviting anyone to join the network. Being part of this means that if anything happens, particularly those annoying little things, like the TV not working, that affect your everyday life and you find yourself alone you can phone anytime and arrangements will be made to get assistance to you as soon as possible. WE WILL NOT CONTACT YOU UNLESS INVITED. You can join the network by sending your contact details to Peter Crathorne, the coordinator of this project. We normally ask for address, telephone number, email address and one emergency contact number. Everything will be treated in the strictest confidence and within GDPR rules. A copy of our policy is available on request. The Hub also hosts a virtual Henley High Street every day from 10.45 am to 11.30am. This uses the Zoom system. The Hub has purchased the professional version that gives added control and security to all the users. Those with computers or smart phones can send their email addresses and telephone numbers they will receive a daily invitation to join either using their IT facilities or by dialling in on your home phone. It is really easy. On your home phone call 0131 460 1196. And when requested enter 277 931 4064 followed by the hash key on the keypad of your phone. There you find us all to listen and add your comments.

If you know someone who does not have internet who might benefit, please give them my number. [email protected] Tel. 07974 573 582

FROM OWEN AND PAULINE GREENOCK Thanks very much for the info about the virtual club meeting and coffee mornings. I'm sorry but Owen is not very keen on joining the meetings and says he's just looking forward to when the Hub can open again. He enjoys reading your Thursday Natter and does some of Rachel's exercises, but prefers pottering about in the garden! Thanks very much for your contact - he enjoys hearing from you on the phone and hearing news of how other members are getting on and it is appreciated. Please say 'hello' to the members and helpers on his behalf, Best wishes and stay safe, FROM CONNIE GAINES I just have to say thank for our weekly newsletter, although I can’t contribute in any way. The one thing I can do is to pray for everyone’s safe keeping from this awful virus. ( Editor’s Note: Connie is doing, probably, the most important thing) INFORMATION ABOUT FOOD PURCHASES We have discovered that the Co-op will take telephone orders after 2.00pm in the afternoon. They will make up your order which you can collect from the shop where you will pay in the normal way. This is a great service that protects you against the increased risk of having to collect items for yourself from the shelves. You can also order from the Bakery and in some cases they may deliver. We have been told about Beaumont at Home 0121 322 8809. They are providing a variety of vegetable and fruit boxes, no choice but we are told very good quality. The Dairy Box has butter, cream bread etc and is currently £9. The fruit box is £8. They can also supply ready meals borne out of their experience as suppliers of hotels and restaurants locally. A local resident paid £28 for 4 meals. There is no charge for delivery. They are based in Tanworth in Arden. By now you will all know of the service being offered at the Butcher’s Social. Penny Stott, one of the Hub’s Trustees, opens up a discussion: There is a realisation, Mr Macron says, that if people could do the unthinkable to their economies to slow a pandemic, they could do the same to arrest catastrophic climate change. People have come to understand “that no one hesitates to make very profound, brutal choices when it’s a matter of saving lives. It’s the same for climate risk,” he says. “Great pandemics of respiratory distress syndromes like those we are living through now used to seem very far away, because they always stopped in Asia. Well, climate risk seems very far away because it affects Africa and the Pacific. But when it reaches you, it’s wake-up time.”
