The Supporting U.S. Russian Agreements and Memorandums

Tiksi in the context of the the International Polar Year

The Science ConceptCoordination of Arctic Observatory Measurements

NOT JUST WEATHER STATIONS

Rational for Intensive Atmospheric Observatories

Weather stations only tell you HOW the climate is changing (but the long-term measurements are often not of sufficient stability to monitor long-term climate change)

Also need to know WHY the climate is changing. This requires more rigorous control on fundamental measurements (temperature, winds, pressure, precipitation) and ALSO supporting research grade measurements that will understanding the processes that control climate change.

ALSO Need to respond to the NOW issues• Sudden events

Existing Components• NSF/Polar Foundation infrastructure NOAA project

coordination and long-term design• Government of Sakha road and power improvements• Roshydromet weather station upgrades –

communications and weather station measurement systems

• NOAA observation programs• Roshydromet observation programs• NASA observation programs• FMI observation programs

2009 Program Activities• Logistics Team Meeting

St. Petersburg in March ’09 - construction plan for finishing the site and Clean Air Facility improvements in August 2009

• Science Team Meeting in Boulder May ’09 - resulting in the finalization of a current science plan with 14 identified joint science projects

• Training in US of Russian Technical Staff in July

Long term historical measurements make Tiksi a invaluable site

Weather Station built in 2006Still requires plumbing and additional weatherization(in progress as of October 2, 2009)

Official opening of the New Tiksi Weather Station on November 28, 2006

Clean Air Facility – Structure completed in 2008Still needs conditioned power, additional electrical,Etc.

Special Requirements to be a Clean Air Facility

Results of the 2009 Installation

• Russian installations completed• Finnish installations partially completed• Some US sampling programs started• Most of the US equipment delayed in shipping and
