Today’s treatments are far more comfortable when compared with the early years of injectables. Anti-wrinkle injections are virtually painless, often compared to plucking an eyebrow. And while dermal filler injections can be a little more invasive, prior to injection a topical gel is applied to the treatment area that numbs the skin very eectively. If this is not eective enough for an individual, we can also inject a local anaesthetic into the dermis to further enhance the numbing eect. dermis to further enhance the numbing eect. Finally, all dermal fillers used at Magnolia contain local anaesthetic. In my ten plus years of injecting, this numbing duo (or trio) has never failed to get a patient through a treatment comfortably and with them willing to return for further treatment.

The primary use for dermal fillers is to replace volume lost through the natural ageing process, and to add support to retaining ligaments. We can also add volume to enhance natural features. If performed by an experienced and ethical practitioner, none of these applications will stretch the skin, and you will have no long-term eects should you choose to cease treatment at any point in your life.

Again, this is not the case if you see an experienced and ethical practitioner who will ensure the underlying anatomy and your individual facial proportions are considered (and, in some cases, the anatomical deficit that contributes to a smaller lip is

addressed first) in order to achieve a more natural result. If an Injector lacks this knowledge and fails to appreciate how added volume can distort one’s look, then yes, it is possible for an undesired result to occur. However, you won’t need to worry about this at Magnolia, as all of our Injectors are highly-trained in achieving a natural result. When injecting lips, our motto is “shape is more important than size”.

A thorough understanding of the facial anatomy and the ageing process is paramount to creating a natural result. If we replace lost volume, we are simply restoring your natural, youthful appearance. Of course, there comes a time when we are adding volume to enhance a feature, however the golden rule is to address the signs of ageing (i.e. replace volume loss) before enhancing feautres.

This is probably the most prevalent misconception about the industry. Once again, if you visit an experienced and skilled injector, they will employ techniques that lift and tighten as opposed to freezing a muscle. For example, at Magnolia we aim to lift and shape the brow, and address eyelid skin laxity, by manipulating a pair or group of muscles so that one relaxes and the other works overtime (so the exact opposite of freezing!). A small amount of our clients do A small amount of our clients do request a completely expressionless (frozen) look, however it is certainly not encouraged at Magnolia.

Don’t judge the industry by the results you see on reality TV!

Throughout her twelve-year career as a Cosmetic Injector and Clinical Trainer, Samantha has been confronted with the same list of misconceptions about the industry. She jokes that reality TV has played its part in fuelling these myths, with overdone and unnatural results providing a false representation of what the industry is all about. Here, she discusses what she believes to be the Top 5 Misconceptions About About Cosmetic Medical Procedures.
