Sunday Worship Services September 2016

Sunday School Our Mission 9:45 – 10:45 am “Called to Be a Servant Community”

Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold.

But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide

down on the rainbow.

FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends,

We are all familiar with how movies get ratings based on their content.

G, PG, PG-13, and R are all terms we should be familiar with. Parents with

children will consult these ratings in deciding if it would be ok for their kids to

see a movie. Sometimes even adults without kids will consult these ratings to

help us decide if it’s a movie that might disturb us.

Would you expect the Bible to have a rating system? If someone asked

you who should read the Bible, I will bet most of us would say, “Everyone!”

But that is not true. There are some stories in the Bible that deserve at least a

PG-13 rating. There is even one book in the Bible that is not really suitable for

children, and that is our book for the month: Ezekiel. Jewish tradition states

that someone should be 30 years old before reading this book!

I hope that makes you curious enough to want to read this book. I’ll be

honest though, it is not an easy read. That is part of why this book is thought

to be only suitable for adults. Ezekiel shows us that God cannot be tamed, and

that God is holy beyond our understanding and control.

Most of us know Ezekiel for the “Dry Bones” reading and the song that

goes with it. But he was much more than that. Ezekiel was a priest and a

prophet, which was unusual because often prophets would preach against how

the priests were leading God’s people astray. Ezekiel warned the people that

they were going to get what was coming to them for their evil deeds, that they

would be exiled, but yet at the end God shows them how even dry bones can

live again. My professor in seminary called him the “crass prophet,” one who

takes things a little too far to get his point across.

I hope you enjoy reading our “adults only” book of the Bible for this

month, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

P.S. Bible Study begins this month on Wednesday September 21 @ 10am for 8

weeks. We will be exploring 1 and 2 Corinthians. I hope you will join us!

Servant Opportunity – Ronald McDonald House

We’re cooking for kids again at the Ronald McDonald House!

We will be fixing BBQ chicken, potato salad, fruit salad, corn on the

cob and rolls and butter – a chicken barbecue - on Wednesday,

August 31st. Want to help? We would LOVE for someone to

make a potato salad or a dessert, enough to feed 15-20 tired,

worried parents and kids after a long day of treatment at area

hospitals. Donations need to be at church by Tuesday 8/30 so we

can pick the food up that evening.

Want to come along and help cook? Great! All we have to do is

prepare the food and set it out for the residents. We don’t even

have to wash dishes! We’ll plan to arrive at the house by 4:30 and

should be done and ready to head home by 6:00.

If you can help on that day, or you can make a potato salad or

dessert, please call Sue DeWitt at 937-3453 or email

[email protected]. Thanks!
