Fragile and GreatA coral reef is a living thing, and

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

in Queensland is the only living

organism that can be seen from

outer space. The World’s Natural

Wonder is home to dolphins,

turtles and more than 1,500

species of fish; come and explore it

in your own way: diving or kayak;

by luxury plane or luxury cruise.

Over the HumpBroome’s Cable Beach in Western

Australia is a 13-mile strand of

white sand kissed by the turquoise

waters of the Indian Ocean. By all

means do the beachy things – rent

a jet ski or take a cruise – but don’t

forget the quintessential Cable Beach

experience: a camel ride at sunset.

It’s a good bet that much of your Australian adventure will be outdoors, trekking the Outback, marveling at natural monuments, enjoying the beaches, diving the Great Barrier Reef and exploring sparsely-populated islands. Along the way you’ll observe remarkable creatures, from whale sharks to wombats, camels, and of course koalas to kangaroos.

Always Good Natured...

GO WITH THE FLOWSoak up your surroundings with a canoe trip down the waters of the Katherine River in the Northern Territory. The river flows through the heralded Katherine Gorge, which is actually 13 separate gorges connected over an 8-mile stretch. Opt for a guide or push off in your own canoe from the Katherine Low Level Bridge.

Make Tracks to KakaduAre you ready for Aboriginal culture, outback adventure and loads of wildlife? Then make tracks for Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, the largest National Park in Australia.

Diving with GiantsNingaloo Reef is one of the most biodiverse in the world, but there’s one creature

that overshadows them all. Between April and June you can don a snorkel and mask and swim with awe-inspiring whale sharks measuring 52 feet. Tour groups depart from the towns of Coral Bay and Exmouth in Western Australia.

ROCK ME, BABYBack in 1912, Cradle Mountain inspired Austrian-born Gustav Weindorfer

to build a chalet of King Billy pine on the mountain. Weindorfer then worked

tirelessly to have the area declared a national park. Today a quarter of all

visitors to Tasmania include Cradle Mountain in their travels as they

hike its beauty.

Up Close and PersonalImmerse yourself in nature at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in Canberra. The

Sanctuary at Tidbinbilla offers nature-based experiences like searching for

platypus. Visitors have the opportunity to get up close with Australian native

animals such as endangered Southern Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies, koalas,

reptiles, possums, kangaroos and echidnas. The reserve is also rich in

Aboriginal history, including artifacts dating back 21,000 years.

GREEN AS IT GETSThe Daintree Rainforest in Queensland is the oldest surviving tropical rainforest on earth. Cruise down the Daintree River and immerse yourself in a land of birdcalls and fleeting glimpses of forest creatures. Stay at luxury rainforest accommodations where eco-tourism operators will provide unforgettable nature experiences as you explore this remote and beautiful region.

A Sandy GemFraser Island, a World Heritage listed destination in Queensland, is the largest sand island in the world, with spectacular colored sands, freshwater lakes and towering rainforests. Hikers take to the 55-mile Fraser Island Great Walk, and many people come to the island in hopes of seeing a dingo in its wild state.

Keep on the LookoutWineglass Bay is one of Tasmania’s iconic destinations. Take off on

foot and head for the Wineglass Bay Lookout for the must-have photo

snap, then wander down to the beach below, keeping your eyes peeled

for a glimpse of white-bellied sea-eagles, quolls, wallabies, wombats

and Tasmanian devils.

GLOWINGLY BEAUTIFULWhen you arrive at a picturesque peaceful setting on the banks of the

Tyenna River, you’ve come to Russell Falls, Tasmania. It’s reached by an

easy track that can even be negotiated by wheelchair. Visit the falls at

night, and you’ll see glow worms among the greenery on the

approach to the falls.

ROCK OF AGESRising from the broad Red Centre

desert plain, the 1,141-feet tall

Uluru/Ayers Rock in the Northern

Territory is arguably Australia’s

most famous natural icon. For

maximum effect, time your visit

at sunrise or sunset, when the

rock takes on an majestic glow.

Join a cultural tour and see

Uluru/Ayers Rock through the

eyes of its traditional Aboriginal

owners, the A¯na

¯ngu people.

Always Good Natured...

Kick Back on Kangaroo IslandNeed to decompress? On Kangaroo Island in South Australia, you’ll find dense

forest and long secluded strands of white-sand beach. There’s plenty of wildlife,

from sea lions to koalas. There are only 4,400 people living on the island, mostly

taking their livelihood from the sea. Overnight accommodations include

everything from lighthouse keeper’s cottages to chic retreats.

Blooming Good TimeAt the famed Australian National Botanical Gardens in Canberra, enjoy a picnic on the manicured lawns, see native birds and water dragons, and take the rainforest walk. The gardens feature over a third of all plant species found in

ustralia. You can walk among 9,000 native plants and see any endangered species then

elax indoors or outdoors at udson’s in the Gardens cafe.

MEET THE LOCAL DEVILSTasmania has many unique mammals found nowhere else in the world. Some, like the Tasmanian devil and the now extinct

Tasmanian tiger are well-known. Others, such as the eastern quoll, pademelon and bettong are less well-known. You can meet

programs and meet many other Tasmanian animals. You can also take an eco-tour and spot abundant sea and coastal wildlife

such as seals, dolphins, whales, albatross and other seabirds.

Closer Than You ThinkIndulgence is only 30 minutes from Perth in Swan Valley, Western Australia’s oldest wine region. Laze away at one winery after another, punctuated by a leisurely

meal at one of the region’s many restaurants. If the calories go off the charts, take to one of the historic hiking trails and feel the burn.

Fresh, Fresher, FreshestTasmania puts paradise on a plate, with

fresh produce ranging from stone fruits

to cool-climate wines. Enjoy regional fare

and celebrate the delights that come

with the changing seasons. Locals dive

along coastal reefs for abalone, harvest

oysters from rocks, and catch wild trout

in a highland stream. Visitors peruse a

menu and reap the riches.

Drive in Good TasteThe Poacher’s Way, a self drive tour in Canberra and the surrounding regions was developed by a group of people inspired by life and the land. Immerse yourself in the lifestyle and passions of these creators and enjoy the diverse range of experiences including dining, cool climate wines, arts, crafts, bed and breakfasts, day spas and much more.
