They researched trends and reviewed the results of the community survey to provide data and feedback to a library design firm that will help us make the most out of the space we have. Central is a mid-century modern gem built in 1953 by world renowned architect Marcel Breuer that houses an iconic art collection and records more than 240,000 patron visits annually. It has been many years since any changes were made to the building, and we are excited to be able to use your input along with the best practices of other libraries around the country to give Central the upgrades this community deserves. With the approval of the Board of Trustees, Central is getting new carpet and shelving and a new design layout that will provide more seating. The layout will also include two small study rooms and a wonderful new interactive Youth Room. We are thrilled to announce that the redesign will feature a first floor room that will be used for story time and programs, and will also be available to reserve for public meeting space. This was one of the key requests from the community survey and we’re so pleased to be able to open this space for you. Work began the first week of April and is scheduled to be finished in June. Central Library will need to be closed during this time; we apologize for any inconvenience these growing pains cause. We hope that our Central patrons will take this opportunity to check the beautiful Woods and Ewald branches. You never know where a little adventure might lead you. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Central when the renovation is complete. On a personal note, I have been employed by the Library for 27 years, 21 of those as the Director. I will be retiring on June 30, 2016 to spend more time with family. I have loved working for this library and for this community. The Library has so many great resources to offer, and it has been an honor and a pleasure to lead this wonderful community asset. Hope to see you soon at the Library! Vickey Bloom, Director We Heard You! On Fridays, all three branches will be open one hour later, until 6 p.m., in response to your feedback on the community survey. We Are So Excited to Report that the World Monument Fund Approved a µª Grant to Preserve the Art at Central This grant, combined with the $25,000 our donors generously gave at the Breuer Gala in 2014, has enabled us to complete the restoration work on Central’s four major works of modern art. The art and architecture at Central are gifts given to this community by the Ferry family and complete the vision architect Marcel Breuer had for Central Library to combine art and literature in a living room-type setting. When Central reopens in June, please come enjoy Grosse Pointe’s Living Room!
