Sentence challenge!

1. Use nouns and pronouns - Use the list of nouns (common, proper and abstract) and write a pronoun next to them?

The man - he Pair of waves

Lorry - it The driver and me

The Sailor The sky

2. Modal verbs

Modal verbs show the probability that something may happen:

Would, can, could, may, and might

Using the picture as a stimulus, write sentences using all of the above words

3. Using passive and active sentences

In an active sentence, the subject is active and is doing something

The by kicked the ball through the window.

In a passive sentence, the subject is inactive and is being done too.

The window was broken by the football.

To make it simple for a passive sentence – add was before a past tense verb (not a progressive verb, ending in ing).

The cat was chased through the field.

Using the picture as a stimulus write passive / active sentences about:

The Wave The man The Lorry The Sky The Boat

Use modal verbs and adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility Use passive verbs to affect the presentation of information in a

sentence

Story starter!

It was that time again… Our annual surfing trip to Devon. While my parents packed up the suitcases and loaded up the car for the long journey ahead, we chatted excitedly about what an incredible holiday this was going to be!

Not too long into the journey, the beautifully clear, blue sky became dark and ominous. All of a sudden, crashing towards the long line of traffic, was a colossal wave – not the kind you’d want to catch on a board either…

Desperately, people raced wildly out of their cars, running, screaming and panicking yet as I looked to my left, I saw a man…

Complete the story

Vary paragraphs to support whole structure – single sentence paragraphs – general to specific

Use dashes to mark boundaries between independent clauses, exploring how much additional information can be added without compromising meaning

Sick sentences!

A complex sentence must contain a subordinate clause. This is a clause that doesn’t make sense on its own.

E.g. Although the man had miraculously managed to prevent the waves from crashing down onto the people, they were still extremely frightened!

Write a complex sentence of your own and underline your subordinate clause.

Try starting your sentence with:

As / While / When / If / Even though
