CARING FOR THOSE WHOM WE LOVE

During the month of May, we held two sessions on how do we care for the ones we love when they can no longer do everything for them-selves. The Rev. Lisa Dormire presented on the options of what a Continu-ing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) has to offer. There are many advantages to being in a CCRC. I know from experience – my mother-in-law is a resident at Redstone Highlands in Murrysville. The number

of times when my mother-in-law needed something extra, Redstone was always willing to step in and help.

The issue with this type of facility is it can be costly. Lisa explained that most of the residents come to live there at the average age of 86. I know that, as my mother-in-law turns 86 this month, she has been a resident there for 11 years. She beat the crowd. Lisa did not go into details about the cost; however, I know how much my mother-in-law has paid in the past 11 years. I also know that when or if the time comes, she can be moved to Personal Care or Skilled Care at no additional cost to her. It’s like she has her own long-term health insurance policy. Knowing that she is in a residential housing where she makes all her own decisions and does as she please and we know she is safe, is priceless.

Lisa emphasized that, as the future caregiver, we need to become what they need us to be. This can be an entire paradigm shift for many of us. We are so used to our parents taking care of us, now it’s time for us to step up and take care of them.

For me the most important thing I learned was the difference between Home Care and Home Health Care. It may not sound like there is much difference but there is. The main difference is Home Health Care is covered by most insurances.

Let’s say you have a parent in need of some help around the house or cooking some meals or do-ing laundry or grocery shopping, then I have the person you need to meet: Tim Beckes. Tim is the President of Senior Helpers here in Parnassus. Tim matches clients (those who need services) with trained employees. Some of these employees come in one day a week and help clean a person’s house. Some do grocery shopping and cook meals for their clients. Some help a person get dressed for the day. But I think most importantly they all have a relationship with the person they are serving.

If you are looking to keep your loved one in their own home or residence, then Senior Helpers may be an answer for you. They are not Home Health, so they do not administer medications, but they will remind someone to take their medications.

Unfortunately, due to a schedule conflict, John Peters was unable to be with us on May 22nd

. I’m not an expert, but I want to share one piece of information that I have learned about recently. When asking for some assistance through an organization, they may require you to have a prepaid funeral. This can be invaluable to any family. The money goes into an irrevocable trust and cannot be touched for any reason other than funeral expenses for the person whom it is written. This is something many of us should be looking into. If you need assistance, or if there is a number of you who might be inter-ested in hearing about this, please let me know. I will try to have John come in at another time.

I want to thank those who brought this idea to Stacey’s and my attention. I believe it has been very informative and greatly appreciated. Blessings,

Pastor Wendy

Staying in Touch with Betty Lou Sharick April 28, 2019 update from Lisa Sharick Watt

On Palm Sunday, Mom was taken to her local hospital for an evaluation after she agreed she need-ed to see what they recommended to assist her. On the Tuesday after Easter, she was released to her new home at the former Fair Winds Manor now rebranded as Quality Life Services, Sarver. She is in the Personal Care section, which is open to visitors throughout the day (they told us they are open 24/7). When at her condo, she had gone days without eating her premade meals and was for-getting to take her pills which was causing health issues. Mom still has her love for others and has

wonderful stories to share. Her handwriting is still beautiful, and apart from her short-term memory, her mind is very sharp. My husband, Bob, and I visited her and were impressed by the cleanliness of the Manor, which has beautiful views: a pond, a chapel which serves as the dining room and is open to all residents throughout the day. Mom is grieving the loss of her former life, which is understandable. They have daily activities, but we hope you will reach out to Mom, too. If you want to visit or write: Quality Life Services – Sarver, Betty Lou Sharick, Room 705, 126 Iron Bridge Rd, Sarver, PA 16055. (Please note, her phone number is now 724-353-0078.) Thank you for encouraging Mom!

The Shawl Ministry meets on the second Friday of each month in the Library at the church at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. We now have recorded over 500 shawls made, and most have been given in our outreach. We welcome the participa-tion of church members in alerting us to persons who would benefit from our mission of love and care, as represented by the Prayer Shawls.

If you are interested in this outreach, please contact Kathryn Whitacre at 724-335-2262.

PLEASE HELP US SAVE CAPS FOR A BUDDY BENCH What is a Buddy Bench…….? If somebody’s lonely or if they’re new to the school and they don’t have anybody to play with, they can sit on the bench. If other people see them on the bench, they’ll come up to them and ask them to play. And they can play together. Buddy Benches are made from recyclable lids and caps. Bring your caps to church – there are collection containers under the staff mailboxes on the first floor and near the water fountain in fellowship hall.

Who needs the Community Clothes Closet? Our neighbors do! The economy has taken a toll on many adult members of our community. Daily life for these individuals is laden with struggles. Economic challenges affect much of our adult population. It is the goal of the Community Clothes Closet to assist these people. The CCC exists to help adults of our community who are experiencing financial hardship. It is our hope that, by providing clothing and per-sonal hygiene essentials at extremely reasona-ble prices, our neighbors will be able to stretch their limited income.

Breakfast Casserole At the May Food Bank, clients were offered samples of a breakfast casserole using many of the items they received at the food bank distribution (marked with *). This was our most popular sam-ple offering yet! This recipe can be changed up by substituting frozen fajita vegetables and then using 1 tsp of Mexican seasoning. Ingredients: * 4 cups of Mediterranean vegetables * 12 eggs * 1/2 cup shelf milk 1/2 cup of Monterrey Jack cheese 1 tsp Italian seasoning Nonstick spray Salt and ground black pepper to taste Whisk together eggs, milk, cheese and seasonings. Spread the frozen vegetables on 9x12 casserole that has been sprayed with nonstick spray. Pour egg mixture over the vegetables and bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
