The U.S. Government in Major League Soccer

Jesse Tahara

Period 7

The Problem• Major League Soccer in the United States which is also known

as the MLS is an extremely rapid growth of any sport in the world. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. In the turn of the 21st century, soccer was played by over 250 million players in over 200 countries. However the amount of money/salary of each player really takes a bite out of our country’s economy.

• The average salary of a player as of 2007 was $115,432.

• That salary has rose to $138,169 in three years.

David Beckham is the highest paid player in the MLS.

Entering the league in 2007, he has been getting paid

$6.5million per year.

However… He does bring in a lot of fans.

Thierry Henry is another player who brings in over

$5million per year.

And the only other player in the MLS to receive over $5million per year is his

teammate, Rafa Marquez.

As of 2007 there were 5 other players that have been

receiving over $1million per year.

MLS teams have been able to sign such expensive stars without infringing on salary

cap limits thanks to the league's creation of the

Designated Player Rule in 2007.

In 2010 it has been updated and the Designated Player

Rule now allows all teams to sign two designated players with the option to purchase a third for an additional luxury

tax of $250,000.

The designated players incur a $335,000 hit to the team's

salary cap. Instead of taking it from the players salary cap.

This information was released in April 2010 at an MLS press

release.

How to solve the problem

The problem of poverty and such others like that can be solvedwithin the MLS. The MLS can create new employment opportunities.

According to the rapid growth of soccer in the past years,

about 5 million new jobs can be expected within the next 5

years.

We can expand and make thousands of new soccer

clubs that will bring in millions of players.

Bringing that in will bring in a lot more fans.

It will take time, but within 3 to 4 years the Unite States

economy should be back in business.

Also soccer in the United States will blossom and rise above the world to take the

world cup!

By winning the World Cup, the United States will then be

awarded in many ways and bring in many tourist from all

over the world.

Which will of course bring in a whole lot of money for our

government.
