What Is a Biosensor ?

Definition:

Self-contained integrated device that is capable of providing specific qualitative or semi qualitative analytical information using a biological recognition element which is in direct spatial contact with a transduction element. (IUPAC,1998)

History of Biosensors

4

Father of biosensors, Leyland C. Clark invented the clark oxygen electrode, a pivotal device that allows real-time monitoring of patient’s blood oxygen levels and has made surgery safer and more successful for millions around the world.

The Principal of Biosensors

• It is a sensing device comprised of a specific biological element and a transducer.

• A “specific biological element” called bio-receptor recognizes a specific analyte and changes in the biomolecule are usually converted into an electrical signal by a transducer.

The Biosensor System: Bioreceptor

• A biologically derived material that interacts (binds or recognizes) the analyte.

• Types:

Nucleic acid

Enzyme

Antibody

Microorganism 7

The Biosensor System: Transducer

• A transducer is a device that converts one type of energy to another.

Summary • Biosensors are based on use of biological

material as the sensing element which reacts or interacts with the analyte resulting in a detectable chemical or physical change.

• The inherent specificity, sensitivity and adaptability make them ideal candidate for use throughout the food industry.
