2. A medieval resource

  • Since Medieval times Madrid obtained water that came from the mountains through subterranean canals, from wells and also from the river Manzanares.

  • The first dams began to be built in the second half of the 19th century. One example of these dams is Pontn de la Oliva, built in 1873.

  • It began to be built in 1851 and it was a very complicated engineering work. It is 72 metres long andcan hold 57.000 m3.It is situated in the outskirts of the city.

  • In Madrid there are periods of very little rain. During these periods El Canal de Isabel II supplies water to the city by getting it from the aquiferouses on which Madrid lies.
