TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The L , the God of your fathers, will give you a land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:2-6). Psalm — I love you, Lord, my strength (Psalm 18). Second Reading — Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him (Hebrews 7:23-28). Gospel — To love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices (Mark 12:28b-34). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just two years ago, we engaged in one of the core ac-tivities of our democratic system: a presidential election. Actually, the institution of election can be traced to tradi-tions in the Church, and although bishops are no longer chosen in this way, abbots and abbesses (heads of monastic communities) have almost always been elected by full vot-ing members of their communities. The lifetime appoint-ment begins when the monks or nuns are gathered in “chapter” at the death or resignation of the abbot, and for-tunately for all involved, campaigning is not allowed! The members of the community discern, with prayer to the Ho-ly Spirit, who among them is the best suited for leadership. Once chosen, the new leader requests the blessing of the local bishop, who usually presides at a ceremony of conse-cration or investiture. The ballots are always secret, and a simple majority must be achieved. In our American system the Electoral College is the determining voice in the presidential election, not the popu-lar election on a November Tuesday, just as the monastic chapter is the electorate. Today, most religious orders elect general superiors in “chapter” by delegates of the professed members, and usually for a term of six years. A few, like the Jesuits, elect for life. At least we don’t have that weight on our shoulders when we choose a president. Four years at a time will do!

Nasz Pan Jezus Chrystus przyszedł, aby poka-zać nam Miłość i my odkrywamy naszą rolę jako mężczyźni, którzy dostrzegają potrzeby inne niż poszukiwanie mocy i przywilejów (Łk 22,25). Mężczyźni Świętego Józefa to katolicka sieć mężczyzn. Grupę spotkanie w naszej parafii odbędzie się w pierwsze czwartek mieszanca, o 7:00 pm. Serdecznie zapraszamy. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

Support the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal this #GivingTuesday!

The Diocese of Joliet is par cipa ng in #GivingTuesday! If you have yet to donate to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), please mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 27. The 2018 CMAA goal of $8.2 million is within reach — but we need the help of everyone in the diocese. Every gi , no ma er the size, is greatly appreciated and will help support 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours. Remember, 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish. Our parish has now raised $28,015 of our $9,700 goal for the 2018 CMAA. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged their gi to the 2018 CMAA, and for being a partner in caring to so many in our diocese. For more informa on about the CMAA before #GivingTuesday, please follow @DOJCMAA on Facebook, Twi er and Instagram or visit jolietdioceseappeal.org.
