I“hope Springs eternal” if there is anything certain we can say about the economy, it is that the news is always mixed. however, as i write this, i truly think we have great reason to be optimistic. The stock market is up — with the Dow cresting 11,000. Jobless claims have declined, and the gross domestic product expanded during the fourth quarter. even more importantly for retirees, the housing market is showing signs of life. The National Association of realtors reported that pending home sales index rose 8.2 percent in february 2010, a 17.3 percent increase over february 2009. And the federal reserve is holding interest rates at record lows. But the best news is that spring has firmly established itself in central North carolina. And with it comes longer days, warm weather, an explosion of plant and animal life, and a whole new realm of possibilities for moving into the next phase of active adult living. At The Village at Brookwood, we want to help you feel confident in taking the next step by offering attractive entrance fees that can make becoming part of our community a reality sooner. isn’t it time you had fewer worries, less house maintenance, more protection with a Lifecare plan, and most importantly, more fun? While i cannot always speak with certainty about economic conditions, i can speak with certainty about the advantages of a purposeful lifestyle that fulfills your expectations. At The Village our focus is on lifelong learning and wellness combined with the support for continued independence and security of long-term care. But we know that while people appreciate amenities, peace-of-mind and tax advantages, what truly helps them to be happy and enjoy life is social interaction and engagement with a community of friends. Dining together, learning from one another, traveling together, sharing common interests — all of these positive interactions contribute to something akin to a “spring awakening,” which leads to a longer, healthier life. Please join us for lunch and a tour of our homes and grounds. it’s time to come out of hibernation and enjoy spring!

Sharing a Taste of Active retirement Living As part of a presentation on options for retirement living, The Village at Brookwood served up some fun — and some cherries jubilee — during a cooking demonstration in chapel hill. The Village’s executive chef Larry Jones, named 2009 chef of the Year by the American culinary foundation’s Triad chapter, demonstrated his cooking

techniques at the Siena hotel on march 24. Guests at the event enjoyed coffee and samples of the delicious dessert, listened to a presentation about The Village, learned about the security and benefits of Lifecare plans, and engaged in an interactive question and answer session with Dan cuthriell, executive director, and Don and martha West, members of The Village. “Participants in this event had a chance to ‘sample a taste’ of retirement living at The Village, hear from the ‘real’ people who live there

and gain first-hand knowledge of how an active, engaging, lifestyle — with the added benefit of being able to age in place — leads to a more fulfilled, healthier, happier life,” says cuthriell. for more information about The Village — or to reserve your seat at the next event —call (336) 570-8440 or toll-free at (800) 282-2053; send an e-mail to [email protected]; or visit the Web site at www.VillageAtBrookwood.org.

Freedom! The Village Lifestyle frees up Sanford couple for New Adventures in the pond at The Village at Brookwood, a friendship has

been forged between a mallard duck and his Pekin friend. They spend their days in a safe, comfortable habitat with the freedom to pursue their individual interests and the time to enjoy each other’s company.

After selling their home in Sanford, N.c., and being members of The Village community for almost a year, robert (Bob) cline, m.D., and his wife martha, have found this same freedom to pursue their passions with all the comforts of home. “There are no curfews here!” says Bob, laughing. “And i don’t have to go up on the roof and clean the gutters anymore. A big house has a lot of upkeep, and we don’t have to worry about all that here.”

originally from hickory, martha and Bob were high school sweethearts who both attended the university of North carolina at chapel hill and spent the majority of their professional lives in Sanford. Bob practiced medicine as a family practitioner, and martha, who was part of the first class to graduate from uNc’s School of Nursing in 1955, worked at the N.c memorial hospital (now uNc hospitals). Together, they raised four children. After retiring from Sanford medical Group in the late 1980s, Bob worked as an independent contractor until he completely retired from clinical practice at the end of the 1990s. With more time to devote to fun, Bob developed a myriad of outdoor interests, including kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking, horseback riding and camping, as well as an interest in water color painting. he also became very involved in volunteering in Sanford with organizations such as Senior Services, prostate cancer education, rotary, paddle club and the carolina chapter of the Lewis and clark Trail heritage foundation. “i have done about two-thirds of the Lewis and clark expedition by canoe, kayak, horseback, hiking and car camping — all that kind of stuff,” he says.

in contrast, martha prefers the kind of adventure that includes nice hotels, particularly traveling to locations in the orient. “We’ve never been any place that we didn’t like,” she says. “We’ve been on all the continents, except Antarctica.” As they looked ahead to their future, martha decided they needed to move to a retirement community where they could both pursue the things they love while feeling more security and peace-of-mind about the future. martha moved to The Village last June, and Bob stayed in Sanford to sell their house. “i put it on the market, and boom! it sold within two days,” he says. The clines chose an apartment home in The Village as their new residence. “i decided early on that i wanted everything under one roof, and those kinds of retirement communities are not so easy to come by,” martha says. “The Village offers dining, post office, health clinic, salon, exercise all under one roof. it also has a smaller community of members and new buildings. Plus, it looks good! Bob agrees. “The Village uses some neat architectural design along with nice color combinations. it’s bright and open and airy.” having several large bodies of water within 15 minutes is an added bonus. An afternoon stroll at The Village.

Bob, kayaking on one of NC’s many lakes.

Graham-mebane Lake, Lake macintosh and Lake cammack are all very close. “There’s lots of fresh water here,” Bob says. “i went kayaking on Graham-mebane Lake the other day and saw a lot of canadian geese and turtles. it was beautiful.” he paddled down the haw river during the Yee-haw! river Paddle and is working with Joe Jacob at haw river canoe & Kayak company to plan a group paddle that includes several members of The Village. “one of them has never been in a canoe or kayak in her life!” he says. This summer he will be traveling to the florida Keys with his daughter and son-in-law to camp and kayak. martha has gotten involved in a book club, literary club, bridge and exercise classes. She also works in the Village Shoppe, and she and her daughter are going to Bermuda on a planned trip with The Village’s Life enrichment coordinator, ruth Ann Stubblefield. Living at The Village has definitely allowed the clines to relax more and spend time pursuing their individual passions rather than worrying about the mundane tasks of everyday life. “Living here gives you freedom!” says Bob. “The freedom to do what you want to do at your level of adventure.”

On the Haw River The Haw River is a tributary of the Cape Fear River that is approximately 110 miles long and entirely contained in north central North Carolina. It is home to many examples of local wildlife, including blue heron, beaver, deer, otter, and bluegill bream. The Haw River Trail is part of the “North Carolina Mountains to Sea Trail” and the Haw River Paddle Trail includes numerous access points in the county. You can find more information about the Haw River on the following Web sites:

Planning for Your future? What to Do right Now.Are you looking toward the future, ready to invest in a longer, happier, healthier life in a Lifecare community? here are some tips on selling your home quickly, so you can make that dream a reality. 1) Examine curb appeal with a critical eye.

make simple repairs, paint, cut back overgrown or dead bushes and trees, and spruce up the yard.

2) Declutter. Put away anything that is not essential so potential buyers can envision the house as their own.

3) Stage your home. more than repairs, decorating and cleaning, staging helps the home appear bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and more loving. hire a professional home stager or read up on the subject.

4) Make sure your Realtor has a video tour of your home on his or her site. This feature increases the chances of your house selling.

5) Price your home competitively. Your price should match those of recently sold, comparable homes in the area. if prices in your area are changing rapidly, look back only about three months, six if they have changed slowly or remained the same.

6) Use social media to market your home. create a blog with simple, free software on blogspot.com, which essentially creates a Web site for your house. include descriptions of your home, neighborhood, schools and community and add pictures and even a video tour. Then, e-mail the link to your friends, post it on facebook and “tweet” about it through Twitter.
