THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE OF BURBANK JUNE 2018 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Hello! I wanted to take this opportunity to say “hi” and introduce myself for those who I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. I have had the privilege of working for Belmont over the past five years as the Memory Programs Coordinator at our Westwood community. As I have made the transition here to Burbank I can only think of how friendly, kind, and patient everyone has been to me. Coming in as “the new guy” can be intimidating at first, so I truly want to say thank you for all the support I have felt. On the note of being “the new guy”, I realize that this month marks my 8th year anniversary of living in Los Angeles. When I think back to first moving here after college I recall knowing about three people in total and constantly being lost trying to navigate the freeways. I was regularly homesick, missing the friends I left behind, and looking to find a new sense of belonging. Luckily for me, that’s when I came across Belmont Village. Over the past five years being a part of Belmont has given me the support, the purpose, and the sense of belonging I was missing when first coming to L.A. I have always been grateful for that and try to ensure our residents, families, and staff feels the same as they join Belmont as well. I am truly excited to be part of the Belmont Village Burbank family and look forward to getting to know everyone who calls this home. Please always let me know what I can do to help and thank you again for the warm welcome. - Chris We are pleased to welcome our new Executive Director, Chris Schroeder, to our Belmont Village of Burbank family! SHORT FORMIMPROV COMEDYPERFORMANCE

Come watch this fun,laugh-filled performance as ateam of improvisationalcomedians perform a series ofpopular short-form improvgames. Each game is different, lasts a couple of minutes, andinvolves a nice dose of audienceinteraction! What’s an example? The classic game, Blind Line, hasaudience members write out asentence on a slip of paper. Thepapers are collected, put into ahat and the performers start ascene...BUT each performermust sporadically reach into thebag, read a completely randomsentence aloud and somehowwork that line into the existingscene!

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS NEWSMay of 2018 was definitely a month of stimulating fun for the

Circle of Friends—-no May-be about it! We can’t decide if GriffithPark or Santa Monica Bay was our favorite picnic destination- wehad such a good time visiting both this past month! And to makesure we properly nourished our red-sauce Italian food requirement,we took a pleasant drive to Sherman Oaks for lunch at Barone’s.Sharing memories with one another over good food is one of ourfavorite activities in the Circle of Friends. And along with learningnew things about the nation of Spain or constructing paper machebirds for our activity board, the Circle of Friends made every day inMay an occasion to enjoy life. See you next month! -Robert McAdoo,Enrichment Leader

May brought with it a wealthof fascinating themes and topicsfor discussion and activities.Titanic Day, Cinco de Mayo Dayand Flower Day are just someexamples of the varied topicsour activities centered on. Didyou know, as recently as theearly 1900s, the tulip waspractically worth its weight ingold?! Or that Cinco de Mayodoes not celebrate MexicanIndependence (that occursSeptember 16th!). Learning newthings and facilitatingconversations where we canexpress how these facts impactus is one of our favoritepastimes in the Neighborhood. But we love being out and aboutfor fresh air, too--something ourregularly scheduled ScenicDrives and outings plus ourre-vamped patio offer plenty of!

Our updated Neighborhood patio hasbeen such a tremendous benefit for ourbeloved Residents! Now, Residents areregularly enjoying fun in the sun on our

FROM DRCS TAMMYCOOPER

Extreme summertemperatures can be dangerousfor people of all ages, butseniors are especially vulnerable.Heat isn’t just uncomfortable, itcan have serious consequences. As we age, body water contentdecreases and seniors oftenhave diminished thirst, whichleads to reduced fluidconsumption. Medications canmake our residents moresusceptible to dehydration andfluid loss. Dehydration is aleading cause of hospitalizationsand increased mortality ratesamong the elderly population. Many medical conditions areassociated with dehydration, including elderly confusion, impaired cognition, falling andconstipation. A very importantpart of our resident’s day isstaying hydrated. Every personis different in the amount offluids required, but fluidamounts should be adequateenough to keep urine outputconsistent and light in color. Agood rule is to drink a full glassof water with medications, andeasily accessible fluids are animportant necessity. When

going out of the building it is agood idea to pack along a bottleof water—especially in these hotsummer months ahead!

In celebration of Burbank winningBelmont Village’s 2017 Cupola Award, employees were treated to a fun nightof bowling! Thank you to our wonderfulemployees who play such an enormous

role in making our community thewarm, inviting, friendly place it is!
