Sandra & Jim Dail

“Nothing Could Be Finer

Than To Be in Carolina…”

We’ve all heard the saying, “You

can’t go home again,” but of

course that’s not true for every-

one, and this issue’s featured

couple, Sandra and Jim Dail,

would be among the first to tell us

so. Born and bred in North Caro-

lina, they moved away for some

time, but couldn’t wait to return.

Raised on tobacco farms, Sandra

and Jim grew up with similar

backgrounds. She hails from Wil-

low Spring, a small town near

Fuquay and has one brother,

while Jim has one sister and

comes from New Bern. As you

might expect, the Dails are very

close to their family.

Many blind dates turn out to be horror stories, but that’s how Jim and Sandra met, so we know

that not all blind dates are unsuccessful! At the time both were in their early 30’s and had been

married before for a short while. Both were a bit leery of getting involved again, so they agreed

to meet for lunch at a little pub on Hillsborough St. That date was the first of many, and gradual-

ly thoughts of marriage emerged. For a guy, proposing marriage can produce anxiety because

the lady can always say, “no.” Jim thought he might get around this one night by asking Sandra

if she thought her television would fit in a particular space in the Heather Hills house he was liv-

ing in. Sandra knew what he was doing but wanted him to propose in the more traditional man-

ner, so she gave him a non-committal answer and changed the subject. Pretty soon Jim bought

a ring he thought she would like and made a more formal proposal. Sandra was happy; both

their families were happy, and the two set up housekeeping in Garner.

Jim had received an engineering degree from NCSU and worked for the Department of Correc-

tion building prisons for 10 years. In time, he got the opportunity to move south for a better job.

Earlier Sandra had earned a degree in business administration from Elon College. After re-

locating to the south, she worked in the property management field, often dealing with home-

owner and condominium associations. Neither one wanted to move far from family, but they re-

alized they had to if Jim wanted to advance in his career.

The next 12 years found them living in West Palm Beach, FL, where Jim worked as an Envi-

ronmental Engineering Manager for Pratt Whitfield Aircraft while Sandra managed high-end

high-rises for a large developer. Although they liked Florida and met many very nice people,

they kept hoping for a way to return home to NC. As fate would have it, they came back to NC

in 1991 because of ailing parents.

Jim took an engineering management position at Law Engineering in Wilmington. He was

there for 4 years managing 3 offices before securing the job he says was the best one in his

career. This was at Waste Management where he worked until retirement as an Environmental

Protection manager covering 3 states. His main objectives were training and helping company

sites avoid environmental regulatory violations.

Not too long after retirement the couple wanted to move, but where to? Both knew they wanted

to live in a town, not in the country. It was Jerry Blalock’s sister who suggested they look at

The Village. They visited it several times before making their decision, but Sandra and Jim ulti-

mately chose Keith Manning to build their Cranford; they moved in April, 2013. One modifica-

tion they made in the hallway leading to the master bedroom was to add a beautiful built-in

bar/cabinet with glass shelves and doors in the upper part.

Moving from a large home and lot in Wilmington to smaller ones in our neighborhood was quite

a change for Jim who had loved taking care of a big lawn and planting a small garden. He had

to sell his riding mower, tractor, and other garden equipment; now he has to content himself

with patio gardening and experimenting with plants in the back yard. Nevertheless, he admits

that it feels good to let somebody else worry about cutting the grass.

The Dails love to travel. Last February they spent a week in Barbados, and in July cruised to

Scandinavia with a memorable stop in St. Petersburg, Russia. They have no children, but

have delighted their nephew and 3 nieces in the past by taking one or more of them along with

them on their trips. The kids are grown now, so Sandra and Jim are back to seeing the world

on their own.

Besides their travel adventures, the couple enjoys reading—she, popular authors like John

Grisham, and he, history. Both like watching sports on big-screen television, although it’s San-

dra who watches a football, basketball, or baseball game all the way through, while Jim often

attends to it intermittently. The two are also active members of Aversboro Road Baptist

Church.

Finally, the Dails are known in The Village for being owners of a Smart Fortwo Bo Con-

cept. People frequently stop where it is parked and ask questions. Jim says it’s an international

car because its 72 HP engine is made in Japan, the transmission is German, it’s assembled in

France, and it’s sold by Mercedes in many countries, including the U.S. The Dails leased the

car a year ago and say that it’s a lot of fun to drive. Having 8 airbags, it gets 40 MPG and can

get up to 90 MPH on the highway. If you don’t like the color, the outside panels can be taken off

and changed. The major drawback is the lack of storage space.

We all feel differently about where we were raised. Some of us never, ever want to return to the

place/s we grew up, while others might want to, but for various reasons are unable to. It’s a

pleasure to talk to Sandra and Jim who love this part of Carolina and were lucky to be able to

return. As the words of our State song declare, “Then let all those who love us, love the land we

live in, /As happy a region as this side of heaven.”

The Board of Directors is pleased to report that at the December 3, 2014

Annual Meeting of the Village HOA, Diane Turner was elected to the Board of

Directors for a three-year term. Diane will replace Douglas Ball. As provided

2015 Village HOA Budget was ratified as proposed. The Board thanks the

Budget Committee for its assistance in preparing the budget. Lastly, reports

were given by each of the HOA Committees regarding their work during the

year. It is important to note that Village residents have spent roughly 3,500

hours volunteering their time doing committee work. Their contributions

have saved our HOA a significant amount of money. Thanks to everyone!! Al-

I am a Virginia native who moved to Winston-Salem, North

Carolina in 1970 following college and marriage. In 1972, I

moved to Raleigh and have been here ever since.

My entire career was in non-profit association management;

first, with the NC Hospital Association, and then for 34 years

as EVP of the NC Automobile Dealers Association

(NCADA). I retired from NCADA in May of 2012 after many

years of lobbying, managing a staff of 14, planning and con-

ducting 30-40 board meetings and two conventions annually

and special events.

I am a widow with two sons; the older one is a sous chef in

Raleigh, and the younger one is in law enforcement in Chapel

Hill. The younger son is married and the father of my three

cherished grandchildren with whom I spend every possible

minute.

My husband died of esophageal cancer in 2007, and there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t

think of him; however, life goes on. In late 2010, I met the second love of my life, Jeff Cad-

wallader, who is also a widower, and we moved together to The Village during the summer

of 2013 and have enjoyed meeting and getting to know so many of the Villagers.

My personal interests currently include music (I play the piano, accordion and organ and

sing), walking the beach at Topsail Island where I have my second home and collect sharks’

teeth and seaglass. My goals/challenges/adventures for 2015 include finding a church home,

learning to play the concert ukulele which I received for Christmas, learning to play golf,

spending more time at the beach, skydiving in the spring, going on an Alaskan cruise, and

hopefully, a return trip to St. Lucia. I look forward to serving my friends and neighbors as a

member of the Village HOA’s Board of Directors.

If you would ever like to contact me for any reason, I live at 112 Shady Hollow Lane (in the

cul de sac); my phone number is 919-906-2764, and e-mail is [email protected]. I

am a Notary Public in the event you ever need that service.

Turf Thoughts

Fall and Our Grass

By Ed Woolson

The turfgrass in the Village is centipede grass, a warm season variety that is somewhat

drought resistant. It requires minimal watering and fertilization. However, based on the ex-

periences of long time residents, there are some problems that have surfaced and some

recommendations that can be made to improve the looks and growth performance of

your centipede lawn.

Our lawn care company, Triangle Landscape Group, applies the amount of fertilizer recom-

mended by NC State University for this grass. Our lots are manufactured and compacted

during construction. As a result, grass roots do not penetrate into this subsoil very well.

The phosphorus and pH of the subsoils are in the acceptable range for centipede growth

based on soil analyses that were done on a number of lots. Last year, we applied humic/

fulvic acids and iron to help break up the clay and assist with root growth and grass color.

It will be applied again this year at the appropriate time.

By the time you read this, roses and pyrathanca will have been pruned and the pine straw

will have been renewed. This winter, about 50 trees were replaced because of death, dis-

ease or other significant problems that pruning alone cannot fix. More trees will be re-

placed next winter. Identification of trees needing replacement is an ongoing process.

SAY A PRAYER

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated

around the table as the food was being served. When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating

right away. "Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer," said his mother.

"I don't need to," the boy replied.

"Of course, you do," his mother insisted. "We always say a prayer before eating at our house."

"That's at our house." Johnny explained. "But this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook."

The Village Celebrated “Manny Name Day” with

Manny & Helen Losada

( a Spanish tradition they have celebrated for 58 years– Hellen shares the requested recipe)

CHICKEN WITH BEANS AND SAUSAGE 2Tbs butter 2 Tbs vegetable oil Chicken -- your choice. I use 2 boneless chicken breasts, cut into small pieces. You can

use cut up whole chickens or whatever you like. 1 pound of sweet and hot Italian sausage 4 20 oz. cans of beans--I like to mix up the types and colors of the beans *2 cups chicken broth--(see note at bottom) 1 14 oz. can diced tomatoes, (may be flavored) 1can Rotelle tomatoes with chilies 3 cloves garlic - pressed 1 teas. salt 1/2 teas. Pepper Pour beans into a colander and thoroughly rinse and drain. Pour into lightly greased casserole or crockpot. In large frying pan, melt butter with oil. Brown chicken pieces. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from frying pan and put into the lightly greased casserole or crockpot. Put sausage into frying pan and brown. Remove from pan and slice into small pieces. Add to chicken and beans and mix well. *In large measuring cup or bowl mix chicken broth and garlic. Pour over bean mixture. Add tomatoes and mix thoroughly. In oven: bake at 350 for 1-1 1/2 hours. It is done when liquid is absorbed but mixture is moist yet firm. *In crockpot: cut chicken broth in half and cook on high for about 3 hours. Variations: Use enchilada sauce instead of Rotelle tromatoes. Use any kind of chicken or sausage that you like. You can use plain tomato sauce in place of the chicken broth to have a stronger tomato taste. You can make this as spicy as you like, by using only hot Italian sausage and using 2 cans of Rotelle diced tomatoes with chilis instead of one Rotelle and one plain diced tomatoes. This recipe feeds four to six people. The recipe may be multiplied. I quadruple it for my par-ty. ENJOY!!

Village Dates—Birthdays and Anniversaries 2015 Update

The calendar pages in the back of this newsletter attempt to list birthdays and anniversaries (but not the year)

for residents of the Village at Aversboro. We have many new residents since we last attempted to compile this

information. Even if you have previously told us the dates, it would be good to re-confirm them.

There is a calendar hanging on the bulletin board in the clubhouse if you would like to give us this information

about yourselves. It is totally voluntary and will only be used to fill in the newsletter calendar pages. The cal-

endar will remain there through the end of March 2015.

Alternately, please feel free to email the information to the Calendar Coordinator, Jim Wetterau, at

[email protected]. Or you may call his cell phone 919-801-3617 and leave the information.

Similarly, if you are having a milestone birthday, (i.e., 80, 85, 90, etc) or anniversary, (i.e., 50, 60, 75, etc) please

let us know so we can congratulate you in the newsletter.
