THE VISITOR

October 2020

Ever watch an infomercial where they sell knives or a special new tool? They start with the basic

product. Then they say the trademark phrase, “but wait, there’s more!” Another product is added for no

additional cost. And they keep doing this, overwhelming you with “free” additions being added. I have felt

recently that 2020 is a bad informercial where new things keep being revealed but they aren’t a nice

bonus.

The trouble is I think in this time of difficulty, we can develop a bad habit. We begin to notice the

pattern and expect something bad to happen. Even if 2020 has brought interesting new challenges to our

lives, the reality is there will always be tough times. A pandemic happens roughly every 100 years. Natural

disasters happen every year world-wide. Recessions and financial troubles plague different communities

everywhere in the world every month.

I do not say any of this to downplay the significance of troubles. If you are struggling, that is your

reality and it is difficult! I feel for you as I feel for anyone that is struggling! I say all this to remind us of two

things. The first is, your struggles are real for you. Even if the struggles are nothing new to the fallen

broken world we live in, the struggles are no less difficult when you are in them. Knowing that it storms

sometimes, doesn’t mean you don’t get wet when it rains. You can try to be prepared and sometimes you

are more protected from the storm than others, but the rain still comes. Ultimately just as God has always

been with his people through struggles, God is still with us today.

The second is every time of trouble is an opportunity for us to serve Christ. How we face our

personal struggles can be a witness to others. It can speak to the strength that we receive through Christ.

Page 2: THE VISITOR · Ultimately just as God has always been with his people through struggles, God is still with us today. The second is every time of trouble is an opportunity for us to

Being able to admit we are struggling but ultimately express our trust in the Lord can speak a powerful

Gospel message. Some are struggling in ways that we might be able to help bring relief to. Scriptures that

challenge us if we have two coats to share one. Obviously this is not limited to coats. Anytime we have the

excess or even the ability to help someone else, we are called to help. If we know people are struggling in

2020, we should be finding ways to care for people around us in the ways each of us is able to. If you are

good with cars, you can help someone that is having car trouble. If you do

canning every year, you can teach someone how to do that so they can store

up food themselves for winter. If you are doing good financially through the

pandemic, you can help someone who is not. Some have been delivering

groceries for those that are immune compromised. The opportunities are

endless in ways you can bring relief. Some of you already have been doing so,

maybe invite others to join what you already have been doing.

Most importantly, hold onto hope. There is always hope in Christ.

Recognize that hope, carry it with you, share it with others, and through the

guidance of the Spirit be hope. Don’t just have a blessed month, but being a

blessing this month.

Your Brother in Christ,

Pastor Jack (PJ)

We will be celebrating All Sant’s Day on Sunday November

1st. Please submit names of loved ones who have passed

on this previous year to Pastor Jack (preferably in writing)

by Friday October 23rd either in his box outside the church

office or via email [email protected]. Each year we set aside a

special Sunday to remember and honor those who have

gone on before us. Pastor Jack wants to remind you — it’s better to have multiple people

submit a name than have one forgotten!

Return to the Sanctuary: Sunday October 11th

coughing, sneezing, etc.

Refrain from hugs! Adhere to social distancing at least 6 ft in open spaces in seated in the sanctuary.

Frequent handwashing with soap/water or hand sanitizer.

Unfortunately, we still have to limit singing—Pastor Jack describes “singing under your breath as if

along with a soloist” or humming may be okay.

There will not be any child care/ nursery time available during the service. Children are encouraged to sit

with their family

While our worship may look and feel different from “before”, we all look forward to meeting in person in

FUMC will be handing out treat bags for children who are not able to go trick or treating due to health concerns with the pandemic. We are accepting candy or monetary donations for this mission please leave candy in narthex of church or contact Samie Ruiz-Bueno (814)366-5101.

We will be passing out candy on Halloween, October 31st from noon to 4pm. Invite your friends and family who may not be able to trick-or-treat for this COVID cautious activity this year!

We will be holding a Missions and Ministry meeting on Sunday October 4th after 11 am service (noon). There have been a lot of changes over the course of this year. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss opportunities for ministry with events and activities through the end of the year. Additionally, we want to have an update on people's areas of interest to lead or help -- and we understand that everyone has different levels of comfort for in-person involvement. There is also an increased need for distanced ministry at this time. Please join us in the picnic pavilion, weather permitting. The Holy Spirit is strong in the community of FUMC, it is time to move forward in faith!

Pastor Jack will continue to be available Tuesday mornings at 10am for a weekly check in at the Mainstreet Cakery in Fairview or online via Zoom! While you are free to call Pastor Jack anytime with questions, thoughts, concerns, and just to chat; this is a great opportunity to connect with each other outside of the few minutes on Sunday morning.

Update on nominations: due to the instability of this year

regarding COVID, Pastor Jack will be recommending that

individuals remain in their nominated positions for the upcoming

year. We will move forward and address vacancies as needed.

Please contact Pastor Jack with any questions or concerns.

Does the uncertainty and chaos of life keep you up at night? Is irrational anxiety your constant companion? Let God help you win the war on worry and receive the lasting peace of Christ.

We all encounter anxiety, but we don’t have to let worry and fear control our lives. Anxious for Nothing, from New York Times bestselling author, Max Lucado, provides a roadmap for battling with and healing from anxiety. Anxious for Nothing invites readers to delve into Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your

hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In this book, Max will help you: Celebrate God’s goodness, Ask God for help, Leave your concerns with God, Meditate on good things

Stop letting anxiety rule the day. Join Max on the journey to true freedom and experience more joy, clarity, physical renewal, and contentment by the power of the Holy Spirit.

OPERATION RUMMAGE ROOM

Thursday Oct. 1 and October 8 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

We have received a very generous donation of items from Chestnut Place. As some of you remember we will need to make an inventory of these items. We will do this on the first two Thursdays in Oct. Come when you can and stay as long as you are able. Bring a sandwich for lunch and your own beverage. We will have fun unpacking the treasures.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN’S READING PROGRAM

I know many of you are completing your reading list for 2020. Remember this is the last year 2015 books can be read for credit. Since we will have no revenue from a rummage sale this fall, donations would be gladly received from those participating in the reading program. A suggested donation would be $10 to $15. Monies can be given to Cindy Carr or Dottie Super and will be used to purchase books on the 2021-2022 reading list.
