PROPHET
ELIAS
Prophet Elias, also known as Elijah was born in a remote and little known Village called Tishbe, which lies among the mountains of Gile-ad, on the other side of the Jordan River. This area is not too far from the country
of the Gergesenes, where, in the time of our Lord the devils entered into the swine. (Luke. 8:26-39) The book of Kings of the Bible, make the following rec-ord about Elias “And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead” (I Kings, 17:1)
He was born and raised by a Jewish family of which we know nothing. His birth place Tishbe, is interpret-ed to mean a converter and the name Elijah as “My God of power” or “Jehovah is my strength”. We know nothing about his childhood and his life. Most probably Elias was a child with no education or schooling. His fathers name was Sadok while we know nothing about his mother. In the Book of Kings, we find Elias entering the stage of history, abruptly out of nowhere, with a word of faith and power presenting himself to the king saying “and Eli-jah the Tishbite said Unto Ahab. “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew or rain these years, but according to my word.” (I Kings, 17:1)

PHILOPTOCHOS
NEWS
Philoptochos Needs Your Help!
On Tuesday July 30th,
St. John’s Philopto-
chos will be participat-
ing in the National
Philoptochos Feed the
Hungry program out-
side of Penn Stations.
We are now collecting items for the needy which will
be distributed that evening.
We will be putting together toiletry kits and collecting t
-shirts, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo
and other such items. Suggested sizes are men’s large
and extra-large. For the toiletry items, travel sizes are
recommended. Our goal is to put together 100 toiletry
kits and to have socks and t-shirts for 100 people.
Additionally, on Tuesday July 30th we will be packag-
ing meals and delivering them outside of Penn Station
at 6pm in the evening. All items have to be individual-
ly wrapped, placed in containers or put in zip-lock bags
so we will need help with cooking and packaging.
Members from DAD Philoptochos will be at Penn Sta-
tion to assist us in distributing the meals and the items.
For the meals, we will need lettuce, tomatoes, cucum-
bers, dinner rolls, soft fruits, Capri Sun, bottled water
and cake/cookies. We will also need the packaging
materials.
If you are interested in volunteering or donating for this
worthy cause please contact Michelle Hatzigeorgiou or
Jessica Kefales or email us at sjladiesfundrais-
We thank the community for its continued support
throughout the year!!
DON’T FORGET GOD
DURING THE SUMMER It is just as important to remain faithful to God and His Church in the summer as it is any other time of the year. It is true that much organizational activity is curtailed during the summer months, but it is still our privilege and duty to worship God every Sunday in His Church. More than that, we are called to witness the power of His love every day that we live. The great responsibilities of Christian discipleship do not alter with the changing seasons nor with geographical location. Wherever we are – God expects us to “keep holy the Sabbath day”.
There is a very signifi-cant relationship be-tween the quality of our worship and our influence on society. If we are concerned about the world we live in, then we’d better be concerned about our worship of God. Have daily devotions, go to Church every Sunday and have a good sum-mer.
