Spring Break is almost here! Don’t forget Spring Break begins on Friday, March 25th. We will return to school of Tuesday, April 5th. State AIR test-ing will begin the week after we return. I will send a testing schedule to all families so you are aware of the days your son or daughter will be testing. All state testing will be done online.
Thank you for all the feedback and support you have given the School of Inno-vation this year. We are calling this year SOI 1.0 with the hope that, like the engineering principles we share with the children every day, we will make im-provements as we all prepare for SOI 2.0!
Have a great weekend and go Indians and Cavaliers!

An important message from the W-E Board of Education
SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special education means specially designed instruction, at no cost to the parent, to meet the unique needs of a handicapped child. Special Education Programs are provided for all children who have a handicapping disability. A disability in this instance means conditions such as: hearing impairments, visual impairments, speech or language impairments, learning disabilities, mental retar-dations, other health impairments, physical impairments, autism, and traumatic brain injury. Every handicapped child in Ohio is entitled to services provided by the school district in which they reside, including children with disabilities who are homeless children or are wards of the state. These services include: evaluation services for all children birth through twenty one years, diagnostic services for all children birth through age twenty one years of age, and educational programs for children three through twenty one years of age. If you know of a child who is handicapped or at risk and NOT receiving services, please con-tact the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District’s Pupil Service Office at 440-975-3800.

This week we studied characteristics of poetry, figurative language, theme, and point of view . We wrote St. Patrick’s Day narratives and fin-ished The Green Book! In math we measured liquid capacities, measured mass, and solved problems involving both. In our Engineering studies we worked on tracking the data from our energy plan. We also are trying to use juice boxes or other recycled ma-terials to create goods.
Some conversation prompts for you to ask your child:
“What are some characteristics of the poems you read in class?”
“How do you decide whether or not it is appropriate to measure in milliliters or liters? What about grams or kilograms?”
“Which vertebrate did you cre-ate a slide about? Who is in your group?”

4th grade Weekly Update
This past week was ENGINEERING WEEK! At the beginning of the week, students enjoyed building Lego crea-tions with motors. On Wednesday, we challenged the students to build the tallest tower possible using only newspaper, limited string and tape, and an apple. The apple had to be SUPPORTED by the tower. We had successes and failures, but learned a lot in the process.
Next week in Math, we’ll be starting fractions and a new Contract. The kids were thrilled when we read Ch. 10 in HOOT and the owl became part of the plot. FINALLY! Rufous would be proud…..Students are currently researching transportation, industry, and cultures in various parts of Ohio to ultimately write an informational report on their location.

5th grade Weekly Update
We sprung into Spring and the 4th quarter this week at SOI:) In Sci-ence, the students finished review-ing the Scientific Method, Earth and Space Science, and Ecosystems this week. In Social Studies, the students began to review what we have learned so far this year. We talked about citizenship, types and branches of government,
and why civilizations started near water! We will continue with lati-tude and longitude, absolute and relative location, and regions in North America. Students are fin-ishing up their fictional narratives and getting ready to begin publish-ing them! Have a great weekend!

Professional Speaker Series
Mrs. Madeline Oswalt of The Nordson Corporation stopped by the School of In-novation on Wednesday to share with our students. Mrs. Oswalt is a Mechanical Engineer that specialized in creating robotic devices that build cars. She showed us some fascinating videos of how cars are GLUED together and the nozzles ma-chine that measures the right amount of glue and places it in the exact spot for maximum safety. It was very interesting. She also gave everyone a pencil that changed colors based on the heat of a person’s hand! Thank you Mrs. Oswalt for an informative talk!
